We’ve been taking my 8 lb dog here for grooming for about three years. She is about 8-10 years old. At her last grooming appointment we were told that she was very wiggly and didn’t seem like she enjoyed getting groomed. Because of this, we were told she is not allowed back. We have never had an issue with her getting groomed there so we were surprised they felt that strongly. Since she is such a small dog her trachea easily collapses causing her to have a cough. After her appointment she seemed fine that night. The next day her cough was extremely loud, non-stop, and she was wheezing. It was very apparent she was struggling to breathe. We took her to the vet and when we mentioned she got groomed the day before and how it was an unpleasant experience, the vet mentioned that they probably had her leash on too tightly causing lots of inflammation and irritation to her throat. This caused her cough to be much worse. Not only did we have to pay for a vet visit but also an x-ray; something that should not be needed after a standard grooming appointment. We had to increase her medications for a couple of weeks. We are so upset about our experience and feel so awful for taking her there and can’t believe she was treated that way. We are now nervous to have her groomed anywhere else because of this traumatic experience. I know having a leash on a dog while grooming is very normal but small dogs have small throats and need a harness instead. I highly do NOT recommend taking small dogs to the Newport pavilion petsmart for grooming. This bad experience ruined all of our other good ones because it caused such distress to our sweet girl.
