This place is just great. I started taking my animals here because it was a well rated vet clinic, but I’ve grown to genuinely love the place. I have seen first hand why they have the rating they do. Each time I bring in one of my fur babies, the staff treats them like they are the only animal in the vicinity. My one year-old cavalier King Charles is a weirdo and he loves the vet, and the staff here love on him as if he were their own. They’re also helpfully navigating him and I through trying to figure out chronic bowel issues he’s dealt with for a while. Communication is top notch and we always get results quickly, but the best part of this clinic is how the staff goes above and beyond for the animals. They love what they do, and it shows.I will have to move to Lexington in a few months for professional school, and I am very sad I will have to transfer to another vet office.

We adopted a new kitty from a neighbor who could no longer care for her. We got an appt same day on a Sunday to have her evaluated and were blown away by how accommodating they were. We had a wonderful experience and are so impressed by the service received and high quality care. We love the ease of using the app to keep us organized with appointments and medications, too. We are transitioning our other babies over to St. Matthews because we have enjoyed our experience so much and we are so confident in the care our kitties receive. The hours of the clinic are also very helpful for my husband and I who have very inflexible work hours. Thank you!

The team at st matthews animal clinic has been so helpful! They are always patient with me and my dog both. I appreciate all of their support and hard work. I have a German shepherd and he gets a little nervous to come to the vet. The staff always makes sure to do what they can to make our visit pleasant. The vet tech even sat down on the floor with treats to help my dog feel more comfortable. My dog is my world and I have the confidence to say I can trust the staff here! I appreciate all of their kindness and hard work!

The worst experience ever. No words needed. They shaved my doggy down to the skin on different areas. I specifically asked for the puppy cut but it never happened. It's a terrible experience that no one should go through.

St Matthews Animal Clinic has always had kind staff and has been clear with pricing. Pricing has always been reasonable compared to similar services at other establishments and I’ve had a great experience with the care of my two cats. When you view your pets as your family, it’s important to have people you trust in charge of their care, and I trust the staff at the St Matthews Animal Clinic.

The pandemic changed everyone including our Fur baby's. Our Gumball Has been terrified of the vet, but we had to take him in this week for a ear issue And he did pretty good. They were so kind and patient with him. 💜

I 10/10 recommend this vet!!I couldn’t thank them enough. The staff was so amazing. I called at 9 am and told them my sweet little baby has been throwing up since 4 am and they told me they could get her in at 10:30 if that worked for me. They communicated very well and said there might be a little wait time but we didn’t even wait 20 mins. They asked me every symptom she had and tested her for Pavo and it came back positive. She was 100% honest with me and told me it’s a 50/50 chance she was going to make it. They asked me if I wanted to keep her over night or give her treatment under the skin and go home and I said go home. She told me if she wasn’t better by 24 hours call them back or gave me numbers to the emergency 24 hour vets. We got home I gave her some Pedialyte and went on small little walks. By the next morning she was back to her crazy normal self! She was eating and using the bathroom like nothing ever happen! Once again amazing vet, thank you for helping my baby <3

I brought my cat in a couple months ago not knowing what was wrong, just that he had blood in his urine and he was having problems urinating. No other vets could see him immediately and I was very worried. When I call St. Matthews Animal Clinic and explained his situation, they told me to bring him in right away. Found out he has Strutive Crystals and was in severe pain due to trying to pass them. He also could have had a blockage which can be fatal if not treated immediately. They took care of him, calmed me down, and they were so sweet and considerate of “our” needs. I have since started taking my pup there too and I couldn’t be more grateful. Wonderful, caring and willing to be there in our time of need.

Been taking my dogs here for 10 years. They are always great! We've been through routine care to surgeries to new puppies. Always had great outcomes. Staff is caring and very friendly. I started going here after one of my dogs had reached a point, she could no longer continue humanely. 15 minutes before I was to leave, she passed away. I called and cancelled my appointment. Shortly afterwards, I received a condolence card in the mail signed by the staff. That really meant a lot to me and thought it was a real touch of class. They might be a little higher in price than some places, but well worth it, in my opinion.

I took in a stray that was FIV positive about two years ago. Since then he has developed stomatitis. His teeth had a lot of tartar buildup. My previous vet said that they don't do elective dentals and also that there wasn't much to be done for a FIV positive cat. They didn't even give him vaccines. The St Mathew's clinic was totally different. They treated Buddy with compassion and love and like he was no different from any other cat. Not only did he get vaccines this time, but he is getting a full dental treatment to combat the painful stomatitis. I love this vet!

$300 for a groom and being sedated for the grooming. One year ago it was $154 for the same service. Price gauging and staff was very rude. Do not take your dog to this facilty.

I had my first appointment this week but had been to the clinic before when I brought in my neighbor's dog that I was dog sitting. I got a good feeling then.Later on, my dog had a few bad experiences at the vet (no one's fault, just timing issues) and developed vet anxiety that made it difficult for us to draw blood or vaccinate him.I began searching for fear free options in the area and tried two other vets before landing at St Matthews. I believe all these clinics did the best they could but St Matthews was where I felt they went the extra mile with fear free practice to make my dog comfortable. They asked what kind of room would set him up for more success (larger, smaller, with a window). The room had a lick mat with cheese when he entered, there were additional high value treats at the ready. The vet communicated with me and the vet assistant kept Ollie occupied but calm. They allow happy visits with prior notice.Above all they communicated. At St Matthews they clearly asked for me to work on two commands with Ollie until his next visit, were clear on how much time they could offer per visit and what their boundaries are, and talked through other potential strategies.

I have a special needs dog in a wheelchair. We really wanted to get a vet that would get to know our situation and needs. We started seeing Dr. Blackey at SMAC and have never had a bad experience. She is patient, understanding, compassionate, and great at explaining everything to me. The front desk staff is always polite and efficient. I would recommend SMAC to anyone.

Wonderful vet clinic. I have taken my pets there for 25 years and my family used the clinic before me. Wonderful, skilled vets and great technicians as well.

Finally hit my last straw with this practice. I had been bringing my pup here for years. I would say that there is a 50/50 split between staff that is sincere, caring, and genuine when it comes to our visits, and the other half acts like everything is an inconvenience and are rude/condescending. The last few visits, I have ended up with a tech (very rude, tattoos, short hair) that did not have a care in the world about what my dog was going through, and was extremely rude to me and my dog. This last time I was so caught up with trying to be patient with her that I didn't realize she never gave my dog their vaccination that I originally scheduled the appointment for until I was half way home. Like I said in the beginning, it's a 50/50 chance of getting solid care and service from them. If you give them a shot, I sincerely hope you don't end up with that one tech or one of the rude veterinarians.

They are too busy. Plain and simple. They were fantastic when we had to put our dog down, but never called to let us know her ashes had come back. I brought our other dog in 3 weeks later for his annual check up and asked when her ashes would be ready to take home. They went to the back and came back out with the bag stating, "she's been in the back, not sure why we didn't call. I apologize." (I let it slide even though I was upset bc I thought maybe I was just being extra sensitive after her passing.)Now we took our other dog back to get his second round of vaccines (he's too old to get them all at once) and my husband said it was chaotic and the nurse seems to be too busy to really listen to what he was there for. Such a bummer since the vet who helped us with our first dog was so amazing.

We’ve been taking our pets to SMAC for years. We’ve been seen by, I think, all of their providers over that span of time and we have always been satisfied with the level of care they have shown our babies. Whenever we’ve had strange questions or issues pop up, they’ve always done everything they can to give us answers, and they are always friendly. They also always work with us to get appointments when we need something more urgent. Just generally very pleased with their service. We started with them mostly because we lived super close; we have since moved further away but will continue our animals care there because we trust them.

My most recent visit was not for the best reason, to have my dog cremated. It was such a horrific situation, but the staff at St. Matthews Animal Clinic helped myself and my family to work through it, and they were so kind. When I picked up Boris, he came in a very nice wooden box (with golden latch, similar to a jewelry box), and with him being 70lbs, I expected only a bag of his ashes. And a nice satin bag with his paw print in clay in it. As well as a booklet to help with grieving. I couldn't be more thankful of the staff there for being so sincere and caring about my family and my boy. ❤

I spent all morning calling around from place to place because my foster kitten wasn’t doing well at all and could barely stand. They heard how worried I was and let me bring her right in. We were in and out so quickly and the staff was so kind and thorough. The next day my kitten was running and playing!

We visited the clinic today to euthanize our very old, sick dog. He passed away on the way. We realized it in the lobby. The staff were so kind, compassionate, and supportive of our needs. Even though they did an exam to make sure he was gone, comforted us, and gave us a room for privacy, they didn’t charge us, and were so helpful in such a difficult moment.

Absolutely the worst clinic I have ever worked with. I asked them to confirm prices with me during vet appointments because I left being shocked at the bill every time. This final time, I asked about pricing and came out with a total bill that was double what it was supposed to be based on costs they had communicated. During the appointment they said things along the lines of "we are going to do ___" (after I asked about pricing) and then did not tell me there were costs or give me an option to decline. Simply told me what they were going to do, so I assumed after asking about pricing, that they would tell me the costs. They recommended 190$ X-Ray after I told them that my dog is crated (with nothing inside) and is monitored when out of the crate. I saw her tear open a toy and took all the pieces away immediately and that she had already puked up what I suspected that she swallowed. Overall, ridiculously expensive. The staff did not tell me until my last visit there that they were one of the more expensive, even though I called asking about affordability before I even had my new dog. When I dropped off a stool sample saying that the doctor said we should perform it, eve though again I did not understand why, the receptionist said it was typically only done when a dog is going to be boarded with them, which was never going to happen. I continually asked about allergy testing with my dog after her having some allergies since I have been with that vet and denied doing it every time. So when I did ask for things to be done, they weren't. Maybe their profit margin isn't good on those procedures so they don't perform them since that seems to be their biggest concern. When calling and asking about the cost, and speaking with the higher ups, they said there was nothing they could do. They said they wanted to help, when in reality, all they were trying to do is justify the costs and default any blame to not be on them. There was no help done. This is the first google review I have even done because I felt so strongly about my experiences at this clinic. They are not bad people, but I will say that I did not feel like they truly cared about my pet and instead, only about the money they could get. I hope this helps someone make a decision moving forward about choosing a veterinary practice. If you would like to pay close to emergency vet prices, please go to this vet.

I cannot thank this practice enough for the work they did with my dog, Peter. We hadn’t been here before, and vet visits are historically a huge point of anxiety - Pete is fear reactive, terrified of new places, people, and animals - which makes the vet his literal worst nightmare. His anxiety turns into my anxiety (Will we have to muzzle? Are they going to try to restrain him? How do I explain he does better with less hands, not more?) and then neither of us have a good time.Todays experience was completely different. When booking the appointment I told the receptionist, Jess, that he’s reactive - and she took time to clarify with me what that meant for him! She then conveyed that to Raynell, our tech, who not only heard my concerns, but also put him at ease by greeting him calmly and as a reactive dog. When she figured out what worked well for him, she then shared that info with Dr. McCoy, who had him sitting for treats within moments of having come into the room. Never once did he bark, growl, cower, or hide. Dr. McCoy worked with me to hold so she could examine his infection, and with the relationship and trust she had already established, he was completely fine with her exam.I have done a lot of work with Peter - trainings and behavioralists, medications and exercise, positive exposures and even using those buttons to try and communicate a wider range of word association. But time and time again we’d go to the vet for his annual or the occasional sick visit and he’d temporarily regress from the stress of the encounter.I hadn’t heard of Fear Free clinics before, but now I won’t go to one that isn’t. The entire team we had today from St. Matthew’s Animal Clinic made an effort to meet Pete were he was, put his comfort as a priority, and even communicated with me about what helps him to stay calm when meeting new people! He came home today totally normal - no heightened anxiety, no rebound reactivity. He had even wagged his tail in the exam room - a literal first.A huge thank you to the team, for taking the time to make the entire process from check-in to check-out so much easier than it’s ever been. Thank you for practicing this Fear Free model and for normalizing the vet experience for us both. Words cannot describe the difference you’d made in the quality of life for both of us!Appreciate you all and would love to have you as his full time vet!! Keep being amazing and positively changing the lives of clients!!
