Just spent over $20 on a specialty item that needed to be kept upright, but the cashier turned it on its side as she was bagging it. No apology or acknowledgment that she messed up something that I just paid a premium for and no effort to resolve the fact that she had made a mess of my food. The cashiers/baggers don’t show care or concern for customers purchases like they should. Raw meat bagged with produce, canned goods on top of bread, throwing fruit down the check stand for bagging, frozen goods with hot items, etc. And I always have to watch their prices. Just yesterday they would have charged me an extra $10 on maybe a $30 purchase if I hadn’t been watching the prices as they rang up. Staff are usually the most disruptive in the aisles when I’m in there. I really wish there was another option in this town. Management apparently doesn’t do much for training or development when it comes to their staff. This business has really gone down in quality when it comes to customer service.

Of the many things about Gene's I like is the meat department. They get that not everyone has a large household. Their small serving meat packaging is great for singles and/or seniors.

A lot bigger than other small town grocery stores that I've shopped at. Pretty nice, with friendly efficient employees and a good variety of products to choose from. A huge plus with this store is that, unlike "Big Brother" Kroger, this store doesn't require a special shopper's car.

The Chicken was way overcooked. The older lady at the deli was rude but the younger girl was very nice. It is on my route but I won't stop again. The Gene's in Ellsworth is excellent.

Boy, am I glad this store os here! Good meat selection and pricing, friendly, helpful staff, and dynamite ice cream. The deli fried chicken's pretty good, too.

This store was clean, the people were friendly and every department was full except the produce. I wish I could give them a 5 star, but the produce (main reason I came in) was picked over. What I really loved was they had tomatoes from the area, which looked better than other stores. To be fair it was Sunday afternoon so I'm sure their produce got picked over.

The employees are so kind. They will help you with anything you need. Prices aren't the best but that's to be expected since its a small town and there isn't much competition. There selections aren't great either but for a small town with no competition they have everything you need to make dinner for your family.Update; I've not been happy with this place for some time. Prices are high for half gallons of soon to be expired milk & most of the time when you buy meat, it's decent but there have been times we stop to get dinner for the night and by the time we get home & start prepping the meats lost some of not all of it's color. I try to only spend 50 -60$ here every two weeks. I'd rather spend my money at Hy-Vee or Walmart where my milk will actually stay good for a week.

This is a small locally-owned store with people from the community who work here and I find it very appealing. They take pride in their store. And I enjoy shopping there, the prices are reasonable and they have fairly decent variety of choices. It is not a large chain store and I would rather shop there than anywhere else

Glad to have them around but they are way overpriced. There is only one cashier I've come across that is pleasant. I don't even get a greeting most of the time I go through the checkout. Makes me feel a bit better for waiting to shop on a Manhattan trip.

Gene's always has surprising items and special purchases. You never know what you'll find there along with your basic grocery items. This store is a real boon to Wamego. The Deli has good hot meals at lunchtime, and the fried chicken is delicious.

It's not bad but the prices are so-so and a majority of the employees are rude and seem annoyed when you ask for help. As I was standing in line to check out one of them said "I can get you over here" and acted like he was going to open up a checkout line but as soon as someone walked over to check out he put up the closed sign, said "nevermind" and walked upstairs to what I'm assuming is their break room.

This is the only grocery store in Wamego. They have a great selection of products/produce and even fishing gear. I gave it a 3 out of 5 because of the prices of things. With us living 15 minutes from Manhattan what a gallon of milk costs here is cheaper in Manhattan...but e buy it because it's either that or drive to town. Also, they could work on the staff. The ones who have worked here over the years are friendly, courteous, and helpful. However, their staff they hire from the high school could really use some customer service classes. Typically don't even greet you, or smile for that matter. So, if you're needing help, ask for someone older than younger because they'll help you no problem. Love seeing Dana whenever he's in because he just makes it a great shopping experience.

Clean store, friendly and helpful staff. Location easy to access. They have their own awesome bakery and meat department as well as a deli! Chester's Fried Chicken is always fresh. They sell locally made products, lottery tickets, stamps and have a copy machine.

Customer service aweful, literally shut half the lights off inside the store 45 mins before closing. Cashiers are generally rude and pre occupied with everything other than customer. Lady in deli is top flight as far as customer service goes. The gentleman who carries the bags out during day also does a exceptional job. Would shop there because of convenience and didn't mind the slightly higher prices, understanding being a small town such is expected. Personally done with them and will just drive to Manhattan.

If your looking for a deal I would go to Topeka. I got a box of crackers and the same box is $3 at Walmart it was $6.50 here.

Just as I remember it was. Always kinda homey and super friendly. They've got a deli with all the fixings. Pretty much anything you'd be in the market for! :0They also have quite the selection of groceries, including a hardware store (my favorite spot) and pretty much anything you'd ever want to buy, rent and or steal. (just joking) ;) (in a grocery store thst is)And the name Heartland should tell ya enough. Except, it is in Rossville, where apparently, " Only Rossville likes Rossville" (quote from the liquor store sign in town) "I laughed" & repeated to several people.If you're traveling on Hwy 24, between Manhattan KS & Topeka KS; need groceries and haven't already stopped at the many great grocery stores along your route, try this one. You'll be pleasantly surprised. I know I was a few years back. :~oHave a geeat ride, adventure and be sure to stop in 'The Heartland' grocery.

It's your average small town grocery store. Prices can be a little higher than your normal grocery chain. You can find good deals on meat here though if you look during the right time.
