Their description had her as a great dane, after but she is a mix most likely great dane Mastiff. I suspect the mastiff part was also mixed with some sort of hound possibly. They, however were with behavior and temperament. My Dane and her get along so well and she is already seeming very happy here. She is crate trained and house trained. She is not destructive. So after 3 days, we are all happy. She paced alot the first, however, as the first picture shows, she settled in on my lap when my Dane was elsewhere. They play oit in my backyard perfectly. She has responded to a couple of basic commands already and is treat motivated so I think training will fly by. Leash manners is the only real thing we really need to work on. I am having a great experience so far.

I'm pretty sure only superheroes work here. They have a hundred things to do, but they still took the time to help me find the right fit for my family and my needs. They took all of my concerns seriously (even my silly pets) and sent our new kitten home with the necessary medications and instructions to give her the best start in life. These people are providing a necessary public service and when they're busy you have to wait your turn. Sometimes that's a long wait, but that doesn't mean they're not approaching every situation with empathy, expertise, and kindness. We're so happy to have this new rambunctious, curious, and cuddly addition to our family. Thank you for getting Susie sorted for us!

Truly among the most bizarre experiences I’ve had going to a shelter. It’s like staff couldn’t care less if an animal were adopted or not. Upon arriving, we were told we could see cats through the glass rooms…but with no further instructions, and there was no one near the cat kennels. When we said that we had a list of cats to see, they sent us to one specific cat’s kennel, but again, we could not meet the cat because no one was there. When I went back to the front desk to clarify that we wanted to *meet* at least one cat, we were instructed to fill out an application form and told to wait for a counselor to be available. After 20 minutes of waiting, we asked the front desk staff if they had an idea of when a counselor might be available. They mentioned that they didn’t know due to a “dog test” requiring at least two people, and that 2 staff members had quit that day so they were short-staffed. That is fine, but my husband and I drove up from Lawrence and took time off of work to come adopt a cat because the shelter isn’t open past 5 pm. The wait time (or lack of awareness regarding when a counselor would be available) should have been communicated as soon as we walked in. I am also puzzled why the front desk needed two staff members, neither of whom could help us see the cats, and neither of whom appeared to be doing anything but chatting. I also see from reading some reviews that this isn’t the first time this has happened to prospective owners at this location. We were ready to adopt a cat today, but we’re already on our way to a different humane society instead.

We had a terrible experience with the shelter. We went in on Sunday and found a kitten we wanted to adopt. They told us they were not doing anymore adoption last that day. However, they did take our application, put the kittens name on it and told us to come back Monday and go through the process. We were told that the counselors would see our application with the kittens name on. When we came in Monday to finish the process, we were told the kitten was in the process of being adopted by someone else. I explained to them what happened on Sunday and what we were told. They said it didn’t matter. By this time my daughter was in tears. The said we could hang out and see if the adoption fell through. After waiting for 25 minutes, I asked the lady at the desk if I could leave my name and number for them to call me if the adoption fell through. She no, they don’t do that. It’s first come first serve. I said well we were there 1st but that didn’t seem to matter. So we walked out with a little girls heart broken and no kitty that we had planned to take home that day. If you really want your pets to find a home, you really should put better practices and customer service in place.

I’ve had my Shadow for a little over 2 months now and he has changed my life. He keeps me on my toes and he’s very playful but he has stolen my heart. So happy that I got the privilege to adopt him.

Our dog we got from here? Fantastic. He’s a sweetheart and we love him. However, despite being assured he was healthy, he left with kennel cough (dog pneumonia) and we had to redo his rounds of vaccinations since they were not done sufficiently.Additionally, they are NOT a no kill shelter. If you bring a stray animal here, if they do not pass requirements, they are eligible to be euthanized. Be aware of this if you want to bring in any stray animals. I was assured of this at least twice when I brought in strays. They do great for the community, I just wish I knew where to take animals I find on the street somewhere they won’t be killed. If anyone has recommendations, I’m all ears.

My wife and I found 4 abandoned puppies. Never thought I would see that day in my life. It was a sad, terrible experience. But Helping Hands was there to turn things around for us. At least a little bit. Staff at the reception were very helpful and supportive. I felt good about leaving the puppies with them.

Rude, disrespectful people here.......id rather deal with a random guy in a dark alley to get a animal then to go here. I recommend petland in west ridge mall 100% over this place. Hell id recommend petco over this place smh 🤦

To adopt a pet, You'll need to start by filling out an adoption form at the round counter. After turning in the form, it may take a few minutes or more for someone to be with you, so go ahead and start looking at pets.Once someone sees you, they'll ask you some questions at their desk, go over information about any animal you're interested in, and try to find you a good match for your preferences.Once a candidate(s) is(are) identified, you'll get a chance to interact with them in a room.Assuming all goes well and you choose to adopt, they'll take you back to their desk to do paper work.Microchips are currently being offered for $10. AKCreunite is the company currently used and will grant access to your account for as long as you own the pet. I don't know much about other companies, but I heard there are some that charge you a yearly subscription fee. Other things I've read is that microchips might possibly move to a different area of your pet's body. Just something to know and keep in mind.Overall, we've had great experiences here adopting pets! My cat already send to feel at home, following me to the bathroom, jumping on my counters, and sleeping in my bed.

This place was amazing .I lost my dog on my son's birthday, she ran off, three days after that I finally decided to call the human society and see if by chance someone had found my Mocca, I have the wonderful assistant answering the phone my information, she told me they had one dog that fit her description but the best way was to come check for myself, needless to say, after wondering if I was ever going to get my babygirl back, thank God for the Humane Society... They had her, they got her caught up on all of her shots which was amazing as well, and now my babygirl is back with her family.....love 💕 her to pieces ... It is my wish that all the animals they have be adopted , we all need love, they are very good at giving it to our furry friends, but they need help, if your looking for a lost pet or looking for a new addition to your family, The Helping Hands Humane Society in Topeka Kansas should definitely be on the list ....thanks you guys...

They are all so helpful. Make sure you and your new family member are as compatible as possible in the short time available. We have adopted twice, 14 years apart, and each time was great.

Quite frustrated is an understatement. We came in, filled out paperwork, and waited 1 hr 45 mins to be told that we weren’t going to be able to see any animals today because they “were short staffed” and behind. Almost 2 hours of my day wasted after driving an hour to get here for nothing. Not only we’re we not told earlier on so we wouldn’t waste our day, but I had to go up to the counter multiple times to check on our status in line. Could use some better service and time management.

This place has given me my best friends and I couldn’t be more thankful. They are very careful about the animals and work so hard to get them to good homes. My newest cat adopted last week has been recovering from an upper respiratory infection (it’s nearly impossible for them to control this with so many cats and visitors in the winter)- but the vet clinic has been so helpful in getting him better. When you adopt a cat you come home with a bag of their food, and with another irreplaceable family member. The vet clinic very much cares about the health of my new baby, and they are doing all they can as he gets over his cold. Thank you Helping Hands for doing all that you can for Topeka’s fur babies.Adopt don’t shop!! So many little ones who need a good home and love.
