Small hometown home cooking with that family-friendly vibe where everyone knows everyone and it's just a place to come eat and be happy! Prices were good.The food was not too bad, mom-and-pop style cooking. Mash potatoes tasted instant which I ordered. Just needed some more seasoning & flavor.The waitress was friendly. Quaint restaurant in Kansas for when you need a place to eat on a road trip.

Great place to go eat! Good atmosphere & decor. Very friendly and attentive waitstaff. Nice variety of selection on the menu. Didn’t take too long to make food for our larger sized group either. I got the club sandwich on toast, it was very well made & a good portion size. Normal square loaf bread but they stack the sandwich ingredients on there heavy so it was quite filling. I do however feel as though the portion size for the tater tots I received was a bit on the smaller side, especially in comparison to the American, curly & regular fries that the other members of my party ordered. Either way, still great food & will definitely be returning.

Our local restaurant, Don's, is known thru out SW KS and the panhandle of Oklahoma. It is great home cooking. You know when you go you will get the same quality of food as you got the 1st time you entered the door. Chicken fried steak is my husband's favorite. Thank you Don's for being a vital business to the area.

A colleague of mine had raved about this place and convinced me to drive over an hour and a half with him to eat there. It's pretty hard for anything to live up to that kind of hype, but this place absolutely did! Easily the best chicken fried steak I have ever eaten. By a mile. And yes, I stayed for the homemade pie, because I am not a psycho. Sour cream and raisins sounds like about the worst thing you could possibly make a pie from, but it was an absolute face-melter. I'm looking forward to coming up with an excuse to drive here again in the near future.

Absolutely a wonderful place to eat. You can’t go wrong coming here. Everyone is friendly, the food is great and the waitresses go out of their way to make sure you are well taken care of. Excellent!

I prefer to eat here than in Coldwater. The people in Coldwater don't know how to serve a real long sausage and are suffering from a lack of tourism. For this reason, they are proposing to open a Denim Overalls museum to attract tourists away from Protection. The Lady at Daves Pizza Oven is the inspiration behind the project.

If you ever make a wrong turn and happen to end up in protection Kansas Don's place is one of the best little Hometown grills you'll ever eat at chicken fried steak you don't need a knife for and some of the best homemade pie you'll ever eat he makes pies and donuts every morning and it's kind of Handy cuz I live here

If you’re not gonna be open you shouldn’t have the Internet say you’re going to be open the only reason I gave you one stars because I can’t give you zero stars heavy haul drivers oversize load drivers in a snowstorm drive over to your place to eat because the Internet says you’re open but you’re closed only takes a second to update things so that people get the right information zero kudos for you
