Love, love LCHS! I adopted my beloved Lolly in Oct 2014, before they had a facility. She was being fostered, & if I’d spent a million dollars I couldn’t have gotten a nicer dog. My old dogs helped her with housebreaking & manners & she’s a joy almost 10 years later. Then just before Covid shut us down in 2020 I adopted Barney. He almost went home the 1st night because he was so scared & had many accidents. But I gave him some time & he’s a wonderful dog. That’s the thing—almost every dog that comes in to the facility is wonderful. They just need the right home to land in. And thank you LCHS for taking care of them till I could adopt them.

Very wonderful people who take care of the animals. I adopted Gatsby under three months ago as my first pet, and they helped me understand everything I needed to do and made the process very easy. The take home folder as well had more information, everything was overall great!

I’d like to start off my feedback / review by giving my absolute biggest thanks to all of the staff and volunteers here. I also want to advise that most of the low reviews are from folks who unfortunately do not educate themselves entirely before coming to adopt a pet and do not inform themselves of the shelters’ intentions, policies, and rules. Please read my review if you’re thinking about visiting / adopting here! - After visiting many shelters around the KC and MO areas, this one is the kindest, most compassionate and personable one I have ever step foot upon. The owner / boss, and volunteers and staff (Julie who we spoke and interacted with the most), are passionate loving individuals who will go out of their way to make sure your visit and adoption process is educational, informational, as efficient as reasonably possible, but most importantly, they are overall thorough. That’s what mattered and impressed me the most. They care about the fur babies and what they do more than any shelter I’ve EVER been to. All animals are well taken care of and the staff ensure all animals go to responsible homes. The kitten (Cheeto) that I adopted was roughly a 1 week process overall, he had already been given all necessary veterinary services as needed, he was also well socialized and litter box trained, thanks to all the staff and volunteers, leaving me with little to no extra “work” but to bring him in soon to get his next needed vet services. They even gave me a blanket / towel, toy, and a painting by Cheeto after adoption was complete. How cute is that??! I’m thankful this shelter takes the precautions necessary to get these babies into good homes, I felt as though all of the animals are well cared for, and in the end, that is what’s really priceless and what will make this shelter the best in Kansas. This shelter deserves more recognition! Thanks everyone!! ADOPT FROM THE BEST!

If I could give this place 10 stars, I WOULD. Despite never adopting from them they've taken in MANY dogs I've caught or trapped within Leavenworth County (outskirts) area; some are still waiting for a perfect home. While waiting all of these babies are getting the proper care they need, clean environment, welcoming, peaceful. They strive to reunite pets with rightful owners as well, always being positive about situations no matter how overwhelming things can be. As a resident of Leavenworth County, trapper, rescuer... I RECOMMEND. Thank you LCHS. <3

0 stars!!!!!! Do not expect to leave with your potential pet fast!! We were told weekly, for about a month that we would "get an update on the application process" in a week. We were told many times that "the boss was going over them this week" Not only did they not update us for weeks on end, when they finally did the puppies that we had bonded with had already been adopted. We for one were going to take both of them, and a family friend already had their sibling. We were also told the day we came in that the neuter date was set for two weeks out, we then called and were told that it was another two weeks. This is a very inconsistent shelter and I do NOT recommend them to anyone. Before you get attached to an animal, I recommend doing some looking and finding some other options. Chances are, your toes will be stepped on and you will come out of it unsatisfied and attached to an animal that you never even had a chance of getting. There are plenty of other shelters in the area that are far more reliable and worth the travel, that don't follow a horribly constructed application process. We have only ever owned shelter pets, and this was by far the most sad, drawn out, unsatisfying adoption experience we have ever had. STEP UP YOUR GAME LEAVENWORTH, SMH!!!**EDIT**Your response alone shows me that you do not pay attention. Cinnamon is the mother and she completed the application before we left that day. My sister submitted the other application for Devi before we left as well. No response needed, just want everyone to see the lack of attention to detail in this shelters staff

The staff and volunteers are all very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable about their animals and facility. The facility is clean and each animal is cared for. Our experience for selecting and picking up a second dog for family went very smoothly. Thank you to everybody involved with the Leavenworth County Humane Society!

Amazing as always!!! We've rescued 3 kittens in the last year. They've always been awesome and professional! They take amazing care of their animals and are all amazing people! Their volunteers work VERY hard to keep the animals cared for and the shelter very clean!! Highly highly recommend!

I had a great experience here adopting a new pet recently. The facility is exceptionally clean and doesn't smell - this was a surprise to me, as I have been in facilities which are extremely smelly, and anticipated that all humane societies must be the same. I initially enquired about adopting a kitten via email as I wanted to know their COVID policy to ensure safety, and I received a very prompt reply, and was also able to fill out an online adoption application form to speed up the adoption process. I ended up deciding to adopt a sweet 8 month old kitten that I was introduced to - he has the friendliest personality and it is clear to me that he has been treated with kindness and handled lots by staff/volunteers during his time in the shelter, he is not afraid of people in the slightest! My kitten did end up developing an upper respiratory tract infection 6 days after I took him home, but the vet assured me that this is pretty common with shelter pets and that he was otherwise very healthy (he has since recovered). I also love the "pet painting" I was given when taking my new pet home!

My family has rescued 3 cats from LCHS. The staff and volunteers truly love all of the animals in their care and take time to find the right homes for all of the animals. The new facility is amazing and very animal friendly. I highly recommend visiting if you are looking for a new furry friend!

Got turned away because we didn't live in Lansing. Why name it Leavenworth County if you don't serve the county? Very disappointed. Not sure how to reply to the comment that was made by "the owner", BUT NO it wasn't about a dog that was found in KCMO. We live in Leavenworth and got turned away. SO, nobody in my household nor our family members will ever do business with "Leavenworth County Humane Society" and everyone we know, will know about OUR experience of being turned away and sent to the animal control behind Price Chopper that was a waste of our time as well. So, IF you DO serve all of Leavenworth County like you mentioned, we shouldn't have gotten turned away. Nothing you say will change our minds about this place, actions speak louder than words and we heard your business very clearly.

I cannot begin to describe how upset I am with the Leavenworth County Humane Society and Julie, the woman we interacted with. Recently, my wife and I decided to get a kitten for our daughter, and we went to the LCHS on Saturday, 12/5 to look at the kittens they had. We found the perfect little kitten, affectionate and kind, and he really bonded with our daughter and she to him. We filled out an application and left it with LCHS, and they informed us that they would get back with us on Tuesday 12/8 because they are closed on Monday. They called us on Tuesday and told us that we needed to update our current animals on a couple of vaccines before we could take our new kitty home. My daughter has been anxiously waiting to be able to take her new best friend home, but we had to tell her that the kitty couldn't come home with us yet. We got our animals scheduled with a 9:00am appointment on Wednesday morning, and contacted LCHS with our updated vaccine documentation as soon as they opened at 12:00 on Wednesday only to be told that our kitty has already been adopted by another family. YESTERDAY. The kitten that my daughter had bonded with, begged for, and cried over because we couldn't take him home with us, was adopted by another family on the SAME DAY THAT THEY INFORMED US THAT WE NEEDED TO UPDATE OUR VACCINATIONS. I understand that you can't hold pets for people, I truly do. However, it is completely unacceptable that a loving and caring family is not even given a chance to comply with the adoption process. I am furious, and torn apart at the same time. How do I tell my daughter that we have to pick out a new kitty for her? The one that she has fallen in love with is gone now? Julie, I truly hope that you change your adoption practices, because I will NEVER recommend LCHS to anyone.**EDIT**My issue with you and the way I was treated is this: I was not given a chance to follow your convoluted adoption process. Period. End of story. I did everything in my power correctly, and still it was not enough. I also see that you removed my review from your facebook page as well. This one will not be removed or edited any further.

Do not fall for the take a kitten and we will fix it for free. The clinic they send you to doesn’t answer or return calls. Finally after 7 phone call with messages. I called the shelter back and they said well I’m not surprised they haven’t answered, but hey call this number instead. Even though they knew I couldn’t get them in to get spayed in time of deadline. I was issued a ticket to go to court. This is why they give you kittens for free. Like I purposely didn’t take these kittens to get fixed.. What a scam.

Called last week about two dogs. They said they are both on hold till Tuesday at noon and that if we want to adopt then we can come Tuesday at noon to meet them. Showed up and they both were gone. They adopted them both out to preferred people. If your a public adoption Kennel everyone should have a chance not only people you know. Dont get your hopes up because this place will let you down.

This place.. this place is home. Is home to people and to animals. It was the first time I went to a shelter and I thought I would see some sad animals waiting to get adopted. Not here. Animals are happy, very well taken care. Everybody goes above and beyond to make people and animals happy before, during and after the adoption.

We adopted our dog from them. They spent $1500 to fix his leg, and still only charged us regular adoption fee. 13 years ago.

The people there seemed to care about their jobs. I got the impression they not only cared about the animals but the people that came in to see/adopt an animal as well.
