I see alot of people putting their opinion of how things should be done here. Let me remind anyone donating or adopting an animal. This is a shelter. Renaming of animals is common and should never be frowned upon if the animal has no owner. Animals won't suffer abuse or neglect by changing their name. They are highly intelligent and resilient.Adopting a shelter animal means they will need time to decompress, adjust to their new owners and home, learn new routines and manners, etc. This takes time often months and months. A potty trained animal can be potty trained and still have accidents after adopting due to the changes they are adjusting to.No one has the right to talk negatively about the way things are done here unless they are management. It's easy to point fingers when you don't have to make decisions that shelter staff have to make everyday. I only speak from my own experience and what I have observed.Be more merciful to this shelter and others.

This place and people are amazing. We drove two states away to pick up this sweet boy. The women were very flexible and nice. They gave us a harness, leash, whole bag of food, and numerous toys! So thankful for them.

They were very flexible for getting us an appointment very last minute (I'm talking less than an hour heads up), the staff were very knowledgeable and transparent about their adoption process (which is extremely fair and I feel like they ensure that all of their pets go to loving homes) and we were able to find our new best friend! Could not have been a better fit for our furry friend and the Humane Society could not have been more helpful. I would recommend Humane Society of Atchison to anyone looking for a new furry friend!

We have adopted two dogs from the Atchison Humane Society. The staff there is very friendly and tell you all about the animals they have available for adoption. All of them are very kind, courteous, and knowledgeable. You can tell that they care about the animals and love their position. If you are looking for a friend, rather is be a dog or cat, I highly recommend that you visit them. They are the reason we adopt, and don't shop. Get ahold of them on messenger, or call them. You will be glad you did.

I was very impressed with the facility. Clean, air conditioned, courteous staff. The animals looked well cared for. I'm still working on my husband....I want Callie...she's a sweet soul and I know I'm supposed to be her mama.

Me and my family adopted a male cat from the location a little over a year ago. We were so excited as we stepped into the cat room. It was just freshly cleaned which I guess that was great timing on our part. We strolled through holding and petting many cats. There was just one that stole our hearts!! He is a black and white long haired cat with beautiful green eyes!! The shelter named him Wicket which we kept because it seemed fitting. We were told he had been returned twice because the people who adopted him no longer wanted him. It was better than just dumping him outside to the elements, just blows my mind why anyone would take on a pet with no intentions of being responsible for it. Anyway, the staff was very friendly and in a previous post someone mentioned the "crude" old lady behind the counter for correcting your husband that all cats can spray they don't have to be just males. Well I encountered her and shame on you for calling her crude!!! Just because your husband came up with an idea to get rid of his daughter's present and ruin it for her doesn't make that lady crude!! Cats are not hard to take care of hell they rarely need a bath because they clean themselves!!! It's not the shelters fault that you and your husband didn't do your homework before adopting. And your daughter had to pay the price for that how sad!! Anyway... the staff was super nice and very helpful they gave us all the records so we can continue to keep up with vaccinations. I am pleased to say that Wicket is still very much alive and well!! He's playful and LOVES to snuggle and boy does he have a motor!!!

This place is a joke a friend of mine contacted them about adopting a dog and they did all the checking and everything and then told my friend that the dog ended up getting extremely sick and was gonna have to put it down and 3 days later seen it on Facebook that the same dog got adopted.......they said it was their relation so they figured it would be a better fit!!! How you gonna lie to a customer and tell them you have to put a dog down just cause you want your family members to have them and no one else????

Although the Humaine Society seems very clean and the animals are well taken care of the old lady behind the desk was very crude. My impression of the rest of the staff seemed nice but it was as if they were walking on pins and needles as this old lady nagged at them. It didn't seem as if they could do anything right to her.My daughter and I went for her 4th birthday to pick out a cat. We picked out a male cat and took it home but my husband was skeptical of the males as they seem to spray alot. I returned to the shelter where the old lady yelled at me, "Does your husband know that female cats spray too!" I had never felt so disrespected and I could tell that the other staff members were embarrassed by the way she acted. Most would have been glad that we were adopting any animal and been happy to help us.The young lady that helped us was nice and said we could use the cat carrier to get the cat home and we could bring it back. We started to put the cat in there and the old lady, again, "You know you could just buy one of the the other cardboard carriers." I said, "no thanks that we could bring this one back". She said "well, they are just $5.".They then called me a couple times because the wrong paper work was filled out and wanted me to come back down to the shelter. Yeah, like that was goin happen!What was suppose to be a fun experience for my daughter and I on her 4th birthday turned out to be awkward and embarassing. I will not be returning to the shelter and if we adopt any other animals it will not be with the humaine society of atchison.

It's sad when you guys take in a 7 month old dog who's had the same name since birth, and KNEW her name, probably scared out of her mind to be there and you all go and change her name to something completely different that she's unfamiliar with. why? to make things harder on her? I will never donate to your facility again. do what's right for the dog, not for your own selfish needs.

My daughter, and myself, stopped there to look at dogs, also to ask a few questions! No one would even come around to talk to us! Was ignored! Won't go back!

My daughter adopted a dog from there & before she was able to pick it up they gave it away so she picked out another one, according to them he's a blue heeler mix & was supposed to be house broken but he definitely is not

They don't actually care about the animals. They care about the perception of how they care for the animals. You can literally get an animal taken away if you make enough false claims to these people.

It's ridiculous they change the names of the animals that are brought in, animals who are scared and already know their names. What kind of shelter does that?
