Long overdue review, but I stopped in here on a cross country bicycle trip in May of 2023. I had a couple things that I wanted the bike shop to take a look at and had an amazing experience at the bike shop at this REI with mechanic Jesse (almost positive that was his name). He was very helpful and accommodating of my situation and was able to get my bike in great working order. I really appreciate both the service and the hospitality that I was given at this store.

Whenever we're in the Des Moines area, we visit the REI store. There are plenty of friendly, knowledgeable staff members to answer questions. The store has quality products at reasonable prices. Nice selection of shoes, bikes, backpacks, clothes, and more.

Quality gear for very high prices. Sales people always say they own and love the product we are interested in, I don't believe...There was an older heavy set lady who followed us around the store. This was sad because we realized that we are no longer the type of customer REI wants.Not the beloved REI I knew 40+ years ago.

**Friendly & Knowledgable Staff** Always my last store visit when leaving Des Moines. We always stop here to buy new t-shirts (great selection btw), new shoes, and camping/hiking supplies. I personally love their cap and t-shirt selections. What impresses me the most is their friendly and knowledgeable staff. They really go out of their way to help. I even bought a lifetime membership and received a $30 gift certificate if you also bout $50 of items. It was a major win-win. The young lady was super friendly and answered all my questions regarding the membership. This professor gives her an A++.

I've been an REI customer (and member) since well before this store came to West Des Moines. While it isn't as large a location as some others, such as the Twin Cities location off of 494, it has plenty of apparel, footwear, gear, and accessories for many activities, not to mention bikes.Before a trip out west, I was hurriedly packing my last few things, and noted that I hadn't purchased a couple of other items I needed, such as bear spray. I called the store about 15 minutes before closing time, explaining that I'd barely make it there by then, and asked the associate if he or a coworker could grab the things I needed, so that he and his colleagues could still close down on time. He cheerfully agreed, and had my items ready when I arrived.I was very grateful, as it allowed me to get back on the road quickly and still get toward the middle of South Dakota yet that night. I had a memorable trip, and I thank the people at this REI for helping make it go smoother!

Very high quality service, items, friendly staff, and luxurious products from famous brands. Huge selection and range of items including sleeping bags, maps, pads, bikes, gloves, headlamps, and so much more! Go here if looking for high quality items for a reasonable price. Make sure you use your rewards promptly. I had $55.76 they wouldn't let me use because they said they expired. Without those insensitives I wouldn't go back.

My gf and I got held socially hostage for like 5 minutes by some employee trying to push fliers and ramble through his speech to get me to sign up for thier membership or whatever. Everything's already overpriced in the store anyway, I don't need to be advertised to when I'm already in the store.I was having a nice day looking around, might have even bought something. But this guy really killed my vibe to continue looking around and honestly my desire to ever go back in again to avoid that again.

The minute I walked in I was greeted. The staff were nice and attentive. It had a lot of neat outdoor stuff. First time going to REI store and it’s now my husbands favorite store. He got a lifetime membership for only $20.

Extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff. I had an issue with the locking mechanism on my Thule cargo box. I tried everything to fix it but no avail. The GM here (Elliott) told me to come out so he could take a look. I stopped out the next day and within about 10 minutes, he had grabbed a tool and fixed my issue.They are not in the locksmith business, or that of trouble shooting issues like mine however, there was a genuine care here to simply help somebody out.Couldn’t be happier with my experience here today. I will always go back to REI whenever I’m in the market for camping, fishing, adventure gear of any kind.

As with all of my REI trips, the West Des Moines store was just as great as all the others. A helpful fellow (sorry I didn't catch your name) gave us an Iowa sticker upon finding out we were looking for something Iowa specific. We're sticker people so it worked out well.If we're ever back in the area, we'll stop by to get more of something we probably don't need.Also, kudos to all the employees that hung around seeing if we needed anything without hovering, it makes an awesome experience. There was always someone near and approachable so we could ask a question.

Bought my 10 year old son a 24inch Mountain Bike,the Bike service mechanic was very friendly,and took the time to explain the functions to my son and how to ride it correctly,very nice store,very friendly and helpful people,I highly recommend.

Went to Rei to purchase a rain jacket. Found the jacket I wanted but not the color I wanted. Rylan introduced himself and found the color and size I wanted and quickly got it. He then talked about joining the co-op, which sounded great. After that, I walked around the store with my mother talking and looking at other products. After a little bit, an older lady who worked there came up and just kinda stared at us. Tried to talk to her, but she was not very responsive to anything we said. After a little bit, she asked a few questions like what we were going to use the jacket for, etc. She then followed us around the store and occasionally would go behind an aisle and watch us and talk into her radio. I'm not sure if she thought we had bad intentions or what. I was joking around with my mother at the store, but her following us around like that was a little ridiculous and unsettling. I really like Rylan, but after being followed around, I don't think I would shop at this store again.

My time here was definitely amazing. Amazing workers very helpful and greeted us at the door. I am very very very impressed with REI would definitely recommend that you go there if you like cycling or rock, climbing or camping. The sports store is very specific, but very good to shop in. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a specific thing for camping I can’t say enough how amazing the workers are.

As a first timer to REI, we could not have had a better experience here! A staff member greeted us at the door, noticing we commented to eachother on the cool door handle design. He gave us a whole introduction with a background of the company's founder, their membership program, "garage sale", and other tips. We had no regrets paying for a membership after our experience.Staff were helpful throughout the store, and never butted in when we didn't want attention. We learned that they only hire staff who are knowledgeable in the "area" they work in, so you can get great product advice.Yes, the prices are higher than other outdoors stores, but the prices were absolutely fair given the quality. I'm tired of buying Amazon random-no-name products that are just so bad they miserable to use. I'm happy to pay their prices for knowing that they don't carry junk at all here, and I don't have to heavily research the products outside of choosing between a few price points, you know it's all going to be decent. And if for some reason you end up not liking it, they have a 1-year no hassle "return for any reason" policy. Easily this removes just about any hesitance you could have in buying something.

Awesome store with great selection and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Genesis, one of the store employees, helped us select a couple of pairs of shoes and was very knowledgeable and friendly. She did a great job of explaining things and helping us with our shoe selections.They have a great selection of top quality outdoor gear and the prices are very fair.We will definitely be back!

From little order pick ups and support to their verbal/moral support as we put a roof box on our vehicle in their parking lot...we'vehad great experiences. Great staff of very helpful and knowledgeable people. Their prices were a bit on the higher side. My family and I moved here from California right before winter. It was difficult to get everything we needed to stay warm. REI was the most helpful in showing us around the items we needed and how to pair them to get maximum warmth. Will shop here again.

Amazing staff came in straight outta the woods and geared back up with knowledgeable staff who were also enthusiasts, but just called with some emergency stock questions and they were absolutely on point. Great staff and experience all around every time
