Hardware for my cribs got lost in a move but Ian and Kaleb came to the rescue. Spending time until they got everything I needed. Personalized service that you wouldn't get at a big box store. I'll definitely be coming back and telling people about this store and the awesome employees!

I wanted to buy 10 bags of top soil which were stacked in the parking lot. I took 1 bag in to the store and asked to buy 10 bags from the stack. After completing the purchase I was told that the store had a policy and that I was not allowed to load the bags of dirt I had just purchased into my car. I tried to explain, the bags aren't heavy and I really don't want anyone else loading stuff into my car. The attendant insisted that I don't have a choice and that it is a store policy. After a moment of back and forth where I was trying to make sense of this policy the store manager interjected himself to tell me that he was simply not going to let me put the bags of dirt into my own car.The manager first claimed this was a service they provide, when I said I don't want that service, I want to load the dirt into my car myself. The manager then pivoted from this being a "service" they were providing and informed me that they will not permit me to load my own purchase into my vehicle because it is an "inventory control issue" which is a polite way for this person to tell me that they think I am going to steal from them.Frankly, I don't like being told I am a potential thief. The store had my name and phone number from my Ace Membership and I had used a credit card with my same name. I am especially baffled by the store telling me that I can't be trusted to load the bags of dirt into my own car given that the bags of dirt sit unattended in their parking lot overnight. If I was inclined to steal bags of dirt, I probably wouldn't be inside the store asking to buy 10 at a time in the middle of the day.Further, I don't want someone else loading the bags into my car, I want to be able to make sure the bags are stacked myself and not torn or leaking water as they'd been out in the rain. It hardly seemed like an unreasonable ask to be able to load my purchases into my own vehicle. Next time I'll just get top soil from Lowes

Overall, we had a positive experience with this store, except one aspect: trying to return an item which was purchased 3 days ago in at another out-of-state Ace Hardware store. The item was unopened and we presented the receipt, which stated ACE return policy of 30 days.Andrew Zamzow, the store manager, stated that he does not accept returns from any non-local ACE stores, as the West Des Moines store which he manages is independently owned. When we asked if there is a policy posted in his store about it, he said this is internal rule and "his store's wall is not large enough to post it".Being a managerial employee he should be aware that any policy impacting customer interactions with the business should be made publicly available in the store in order to be enforceable. Otherwise the store is out of compliance with the corporate franchise rules (which clearly state 30 days return with receipt), and the store could be penalized for failing to follow them. Not to mention that it is not the best customer service approach.

My sliding glass screen was thrown out without a call. They said they throw out products after 30 days but failed to communicate that to us. Andrew was rude and short with us. Very disappointed with this stores customer service.

Andrew was extremely rude. I came to purchase a weed eater replacement head. The product was listed online as in stock. I could not find the product. I was purchasing it at the direction of my employer. My employer wanted this specific model. Andrew was short, rude and incorrect. He insisted that Aces online inventory was wrong. He said that in-stock at west des moines meant online. He suggested that if the website said was available at another store that would also be incorrect. He would not help me and walked away. The product turned out to be in stock. It was on an end cap display as opposed to in the aisles. I was informed by other employees that he was having a bad day. Frankly I am very disappointed. The store was messy and Andrew was storming around the store glaring at customer's. It was very frustrating.

I tried to get two different automotive keys cut and the guy was ZERO % helpful! He asked what kind of cars and we told him. Then he said two of the machines were not working. He didn’t offer an alternative even though I asked. He could have called another Ace to make sure their machine was working gave us another address. NOTHING!!!!! He said it would be fixed in a week or a month? He didn’t know. Helpful place? NO.

It's a nice convenience to have in the neighborhood, but every time I go there for the convenience, there is some kind of issue.Sometimes it's a return their system doesn't like, so the process takes longer than my lunch allowed. Another time their card machine was out, but they didn't give any notice until I had gathered everything I needed for an urgent repair and was being checked out.The store is clean, there is a very good variety of hardware/tools/materials for most needs. I live 1 minute away. I still end up making a second trip to Menards every time. (Not because of inventory issues)The staff are very friendly, I like the vibe in the store. They are usually helpful. I feel good supporting local stores. I encourage you to try them first if they are nearby. It's quite possible that I am the problem. I just wish that I had a better experience.

This is a smaller store than the one that used to be on the corner of 50th and EP True Parkway. Owner Doug has made a new store across the street, next to Bike World. The interior is that of a medium sized True Value/AceHardware. The aisles are well marked and things are neatly displayed. The staff is young from what I see, and they are polite, not pushy and know what they are doing. I have bought everything from a leaf blower to a hammer there. Recommend this store, although I find most of the prices to be retail, versus if you bought the same thing on Amazon or a discount big box store. Very convenient location.

Great family run local hardware store. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. They let me assemble my chainsaw's replacement chain on the chainsaw on the floor behind the front desk to make sure everything fit together.

So helpful and friendly. I needed a new chip car key. They had the key and programmed it for me. Saved me $ by not having to go to the dealership. Quick easy and almost painless... Ouch those keys are pricey!

Most of the staff are quite helpful and knowledgeable. They do have, at times, just a few teenagers there who know almost nothing about what is sold and provide misleading info. I also found that prices changed on repairs after machine was accepted. The repair service, however, is good if slow due to overload, I believe.

In and out pretty quickly late morning on a Sunday. I went in for an electrical outlet and compost bags. Light bulbs were clearly visible on my way to the outlet so I grabbed some of those as well. Didn't think about a ground wire before I went but they were clearly visible with the outlets so got that, too. Compost bags were conveniently by the register.Appears clean and well organized. I did not need any help.

One star is for the friendly employees. The other is for the cute cats. Today I needed a rust treatment product that is hard to find anywhere. of all the stores around Des Moines, IA they were the only ones who had this item. Except they did not have it. They had sent it back because it did not fit in their store layout. I'm sure it was just a clerical error, but as I write this from home it has still not been corrected.

First off, the lady didn't have a clue. About anything. Then she cold transferred me, didn't explain the situation, so I was forced to repeat. She never gave her name, neither did the guy. I was promised a call back tonight. Now the store is closed, I was lied to and got lousy service. I'm not impressed. Can I Gove a 0?

The people are friendly, most are knowledgeable.The prices are generally in line with what you can find elsewhere, though sometimes higher.The selection as could be expected is very limited, you'll end up having to go to other retailers at times to get what you need.The quality of the product has really been disappointing for me. They are fairly good with returns but I've had a lot of things break just a few years (or in some cases days) into using them.Including a 70 dollar never kink hose that kinked so bad in the first 3 months of owning it that I couldn't get water to pass through at full speed. I took the same general care with it as I do my other hoses that have lasted longer than I can remember where I bought them.I also picked up a set of battery lawn tools from here (weed wacker, blower) on the staffs recommendation that the battery could last at least 2 hours. My experience was half an hour on all equipment at the longest, and the batteries only lasted 2 years (despite storing at optimal temperatures indoors and charging per the instructions)Unfortunately I've stopped going here because I can't afford to replace things as frequently as I need to with this ACE, that and the prices.

It's a small store but the staff is very friendly and can locate anything in the store. We have an Ace Rewards card and get credit for all the purchases we make at any Ace Hardware's store.

Ethical, committed and skilled.An employee committed to a tough task at the wrong price...cutting the specialized keys for my wife's German car. Doug (owner) honored the incorrect price, and successfully completed the job; they have the correct machine for this. Doug stepped up to the plate and did this quickly, and I stayed on schedule...it might have been just a key, but it was important, and they followed through. Even at the regular price, utilizing Ace helped me save about $200 - $400 (yes, that is what the dealer keys cost).

Went in 5 minutes before they closed and knew I was late but Scott the manager stayed and help me solve the issue of finding the right bolt. He went above and beyond his treatment of my needs....this guy is the BOMB! Thx Scott....you've earned a customer for life!

Fine for picking up buying over priced stuff, but never bring in equipment for repair. My chainsaw blade sat in the store for 3 weeks and was never sharpened! They've had my lawn mower for over 2 weeks when they said it wouldn't take more than a couple of days. Worst service I've ever seen, and they don't even seem to care.

I love this store. They fix everything and will tell you what you need to fix something.They don't just try to sell you something. You can always find what you need. So helpful a great neighborhood store. It is chock full of merchandise I always find what I need and some things I don't need but want.

Don't go to this Ace if you want someone who knows what they are doing! I called ahead and asked about time and cost for a service. The did not deliver on either. It took them 20 times more time to get the job done and cost 4x more! Plus, nobody seemed to know anything!!! Very aggravating experience. I will NEVER go back there. Way too expensive and a total waste. I thought hardware stores were supposed to know something.
