People for pets told me my house was not “ideal for a dog” because I live on a busy street and I don’t have a fenced in yard. I find it super upsetting to not be considered a reliable pet owner because of that. They denied my application and told me if I moved I would be a great fit. It’s so disheartening that these animals have people willing to give them all the love in the world but get turned down for reasons like this as if I wouldn’t a responsible pet owner. I’m super sad about this as I’ve been eyeing this dog for months now and really felt like it was a perfect match. Very disappointed in People for Pets and I do not recommend anyone to try and adopt from here.

We just adopted a beautiful all black young kitty and the process was completely smooth and quick. Everyone there was nice and honest about temperament issues about a different all black kitty we were originally interested in as we do have a toddler. So, they introduced us to another all black kitty that they got in due to how sweet she was and she has been doing so well with the love and attention that our toddler gives her!I’m also leaving this high rating due to learning that our kitty had tape worm after almost exactly a month of having her! I don’t blame the shelter as our new cat was dropped off to them as a stray and sometimes they don’t show signs for quite a while. The shelter was extremely understanding and let us bring our new kitty that we just adopted back to them and administered the tape worm specific medication to her for us! However, this is also because it wasn’t that long after adopting her from them, so it wasn’t like it was months later!Anyways, just wanted to leave this positive review as now we have a very loving and cuddly kitty, fulfilling my husband’s dream of having an all black cat! Thank you so much! We named her Stevie, after Stevie Nicks.

This place does NOT seem to even care in the slightest about animals only about the money that comes in from the adoptions, I've seen quite a few bad reviews and I can believe them. I've even looked into them since we're trying to move to twin but can't without rehoming a few cats, sure I'm not in twin YET, but it looks like I just WONT be in twin since they refuse to help, it's ridiculous if I were in twin already theyd help sure, but what is the difference of rehoming them in twin WHILE i move there, I would still be a resident, but no. This stupidity is why I can believe the negative reviews I've read and I sure hope people clear this place out and send pets elsewhere.

People for Pets clearly loves all of the Pets in their care. They went out of their way to help my Sweet Pea Mollie come home to me in Wisconsin when she found herself in a difficult situation with her prior owner. I'm forever grateful for everything they have done for her, and for keeping her safe and healthy until she could be reunited with me, her original breeder. This gives me hope that Breeders and Shelters can work together to find every pet the amazing home they deserve.

This place is refusing to let one of the animals in their care be reunited with her owners after she accidentally got out of their backyard. The owners have even agreed to pay the adoption fee for her back and this place has refused. The animal in their care is a husky they call mollie, her real name is Sweet Pea. Absolutely horrendous.

Love this place so much. My kids go out there all the time just to love on the animals! My aunt has worked here for as long as I can remember and dedicates SO much of her time for these animals. I've never seen someone work 7 days a week and never complain. This organization is SO lucky to have her!!

We got a rescue from PFP this past summer and they were an absolutely wonderful organization. It was apparent how deeply committed they are to finding the best possible matches for their dogs and cats with their forever families. Positive, caring individuals!

I adopted my dog here a long time ago in 2005. He was in very rough shape when they found him and they helped him so much with all of his medical issues. They are in Iowa and they transported him to Minneapolis. I am grateful there are places like this that care so much to help animals. He was a wonderful dog and I had him for 10 years. ❤

I hear they take good care of the animals, which I respect. However they never seem to adopt any animals out. Most of their cats have been on Petfinder for months and months, even the highly adoptable ones.My family wanted to adopt an indoor cat. They do not respond to emails (we tried several times from two accounts), which are supposedly their preferred form of communication. Months went by. I heard from others who have tried to adopt here that visiting the shelter in person is useless, and since it was a 40 minute drive we couldn't take that risk. I would be cautious about supporting this shelter, particularly as they do not give lost pets back to their heartbroken local owners. Don't get your hopes set on any specific animal from them. I gave up.A few weeks later i adopted with a stray 4yo kitty from Sioux Falls Humane Society. The people there were kind and informative. My cat has settled in, she eats wet food, has a water fountain, a cat tree, daily playtime, clean litter, cuddles, butt scratches, lots of soft blankets and beds just for her. She is spayed, chipped and goes in for regular checkups. I'm not sure why I was flagged as a bad owner at this shelter but I clearly wasn't worth their time. The three Sioux City rescues like Noah's Hope, the humane society, and F.O.A.S. are nice to work with as well. I would support them instead.

As a Animal Hospital worker and rescuer I am happy to called Donna and People for Pets my friends. They have helped us out numerous times and we try to help them as much as we can. Saving animals is a very rewarding, but at the same time very stressful! Most the times there are far more animals coming in than there are getting adopted out.If anyone leaves bad reviews, for a place trying it's hardest to find the BEST home for these animals, It can only mean they were probably not deemed a suitable owner. The pets count on the rescuers to find wonderful, responsible, forever, homes and People for Pets is doing a WONDERFUL job!!

We adopted our newest family member, Peanut the cat, from this shelter and the staff there are WONDERFUL people. They are detailed with the potential adoption screening process to make sure that the animals are going to a suitable, safe and happy new home- which is EXACTLY what should be done. They take wonderful care of the animals while they wait for their forever home. I would encourage anyone and everyone who is looking for a new "family addition" to contact them and go meet all the amazing cats/dogs they are currently housing.

For people trying to find homes for pets they sure make it hard for anyone to adopt any. We have a cat that is up to date with his checkups (we take care of our pet) and tried getting another cat and fell in love with one they had there! But it took weeks for them to actually get back to us only be denied. Really stupid to not even give us reason why either. We has better luck at another place up in the cities.I will say I do like how they take care of cats alot better than humane societyz I've seen.

This is a shelter that puts their homeless animals first. It provides shelter and medical support --- as importantly it provides love and comfort. Staff and volunteers work hard to make good matches to be sure forever homes are truly forever. If you need a new family member People for Pets is great choice.

THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE!!Without People For Pets here in Spencer, all the unwanted cats and dogs would have no place to go or be forced into kill-shelters. They serve to help the city and help all the area animals find forever homes. It's not an easy job. People aren't always happy, but working with lots of volunteers they do all they can.

We have been wanting to adopt a dog named candy from people for pets for most of a month now and they have been disappointing to our family. We have been told three times that our application is in the process of being evaluated for over a week and every other place we have gave an application to has approved us in two days.

I adapted a dog on Saturday, paid 300 $ for him, took him home, and when I opened the door to my vehicle, the dog ran. Looked for him until 9:30, after dark Called the shelter to tell them what happened, they sent one of their people to where I live on Sunday morning to help find the dog. Dig was found, UNHARMED, but they took him back to the shelter, even though I had paid for him and have all the paperwork for the adaption. My wife and I have a 4 bedroom house and a fenced in yard, but PEOPLE FOR PETS seem to think we are unable to take care of the dog, even though we have 2 other digs. Just about anyone who has a dog has had it run off at one time or another. They sent one of their staff down to help find the dog that I paid for and adapted, with no intentions of returning him to me when he was found. Very unprofessional, judgemental, biased people, and I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND them to anyone else I know. They get 5 thumbs down

People for Pets Helped me spay and nueter my dogs. In 2002 I adopted Lava from them, she was suppose to have been one and a half years old, but looked younger. My brother helped me name her Wolf. She loved to ride in my truck. She was part wolfhound and part lab. Loved hot dog and knuckle bones from Fare Way.. A couple of months ago I felt a flat tumor like thing on her side. Last thursday I took her to the vet in Spirit Lake and they did a digital X-ray and a huge tumor had filled around her intestines. (Dickinson County Animal Clinic,) I took her back home with me after buying her a McDonald's hamburger. Friday morning I made an appointment to go back to clinic. I took her with me to excersize class along with Bandit. Than bought them hot dogs at Fare Way. Yes she wieghtd 87 pounds, teeth were good eyes good legs good but that x-ray no good. So trusting. They told me usally they do not live that long. They use anesthia shot first which puts them to sleep. I thank the Lord for her, the beauty of wolfhounds is they have human like eyes that zero in on you. I maybe said too much, Wolf was special, I had talked to the Lord about her, and did not want to wait until she was in pain. I had her along time, They use to advertize in some paper maybe the Graettinger Times, I get that and the free papers and I saw her picture. My birthday is the 21 of March so this is the same month and close to the week that I got her all those years ago.

We recently adopted a dog from them, good, sweet Tucker. They had taken great care of him, they were professional and genuinely concerned about the well being of Tucker in his forever home.

Terrible experience. The most rude, judgemental, bias people i have ever met. Would not even give me, my wife and kid a second glance. Would never recommend for people or pets. That place is the animals " forever home" just locked in cadges for the rest of their lives. I feel terrible for thoes animals and the people that just left them there.

Very disappointed I was in love with a dog their filled an app out I've called 3 time and they just keep telling me they are too busy with chores. They cant take 2 sec out of there day to get the animals out of there I will not be going back and the whole time I was there they just stood there and did the "chores" I was there for 30 mins befor someone finally helped me. They dont want to get rid of the animals there a lady named donna sits in her office eating while loving up on all the cats and feeding then human food. Pathetic place
