NEW: I went to companion pets a month ago. The store has changed very much! Not only I'd everything in better condition, the employee was very nice as well. She greeted me as I walked in, and let me hold and touch the variety of animals. The animals were very nice which mean they are taken care of and handled properly. Companion pets went from worse to a very nice pet store where you can see love for the animals, nice employees, and amazing service. I would recommend companion pets, its a great local pet store.OLD: As a child, I lived close to the pet shop. I would walk there very often... as I went I started to notice more and more that they take terrible care of their animals. Everything in the store is more expensive than any other pet shop in Ottumwa. Also because of the condition they have their animals live in, they are usually mean, most animals in the shop dislike being handled because of the poor conditions. Also, one time I went in as a child, and they made me leave because I wasn't 16 years old. I have loved animals my whole life, and to be kicked out of a pet shop because I was 12, and not 16 broke my heart. I would not recommend Companion pets, not only do they not know how to treat their animals, they can be rude, and act as if they hate their job

I am answering the so called review written by a woman who calls herself Cherl Newman. She is a trouble maker, She claims in her review that all the animals in the store were being cared for wrong, In her picture she looks to be maybe 20 years old. Where did this girl get training or education in or own that may pets to know what each and every animal needs, its housing,and the age, and what animals can be housed together. Guinea pigs and rabbits and even chincillas are kept displayed in every pet store in the country together, and they get along just fine,As to the animals being hot. obviously she came in during the summer, and most animals and people sweat and are uncomforable when its hot out. She claims theguinea pigs werent one week old, how did she know they were for sale, they were probably with their mother, and would only have been the size of a baseballShe also states that she is from Missouri over an hour away, and hears stories from other people how bad the store is, how many people can you find an hour away that just come up and start telling you about a business that far away.Obvious Cherl is making up items, that she has little or no knowledge about. so taking her review would be stupid, I have been in Companion Pets and buy animals there all the time, she is wrong and people need to go in and judge Companion Pets on what they see, not a teenagers, thought process, and lack of knowledge.

I will NEVER go back to this store nor will I ever support their business, ever. Today I went to Companion Pets in Ottumwa IA and I was plain appalled at the condition of the animals, the way they were kept, so on so forth. There was a chinchilla plainly having heat stroke because they kept it in a plexiglass cage with super poor ventilation with guinea pigs and rabbits. The chinchilla probably hadn't had a dust bath in it's lifetime. The plexiglass was even warm to the touch. The rabbits in that same tank's ears were very red because they were hot, they were low to the floor of their cage and panting, the guinea pigs were obviously too young to be for sale too, maybe a week old. Those animals should never be in the same cage together too! Most of the animals had no water or food, and there were dead ones in cages. Lest we not forget the poor hedgehog who was gasping for breath in his cage. When we told the employee she did nothing but say "Oh, I -guess- I can check it out" VERY rudely. I'm extremely upset about the condition of the animals, and this is just a couple. I've heard people talk about this store before and have similar stories, but I thought I would go by anyways because you never know. DO NOT GO TO THIS STORE! It is AWFUL!
