Very disappointed, never will we back. Had surgery for my dog booked 2 1/2 months ago and they canceled it due to their doctor, going to a cow thing. Absolutely ridiculous! They even confirmed my appointment a day before. I’ve had issues in the past as well when calling and trying to make appointment, they were very short and sometimes rude.

They took excellent care of puppy when he had surgery. Called with updates on how the surgery went. Provided all medicines and instruction. By the next day my pup was up and moving just as his old self. The surgery was quoted a lil high, but ended being very reasonably priced.

PLEASE be very careful in taking your pets to this clinic on Richmond in Ottumwa. PLEASE do not make the same mistake I did.I took my Sumo (cat) into the clinic at 8am on Thursday morning he was weak and just not himself. They did a few labs and stated his glucose was high and his liver and kidney functions were not good and WBC were abnormal. They advised for more labs to be done and I agreed. Then then stated it was some type of infection but did not know what. They recommended that he stay there for IV fluids, antibiotics, and professional monitoring for rest of day and over night. I asked for frequent updates and told them to do everything possible and to let me know of any changes. I received no calls so I called in 4 hours later and they stated there was no change. I called again and still no change but they stated they had IV started. I heard nothing through out the night. At 8am today (Friday) i called in again to check. Vet told me there was no change and that there was nothing left to do but possible referral to Des Moines or considering other options (putting him down). I stated that was fine but verified that they had given antibiotics and asked if he had had x-rays to see if the infection would show maybe in kidneys with a stone or in lungs. Vet stated and i quote 'We have not given him any antibiotics I was more concerned with giving him fluids and no I have not done X-ray would you like me too?" I replied with why have you not given antibiotic and yes please do x-ray. She called back 10 minutes later and said nothing was indicated on the x-ray. I said well start antibiotics that he should of started yesterday and I will be there in a couple hours to pick him up and take him to another vet. She said ok.I arrived at vet to pick him up at 11am and found him to be completely motionless, unresponsive, dry mouth, dry eyes, and covered in filth. I asked What the heck is wrong with him, this is a definite change did you not notice? He was not like this when brought him in" She said sorry. But you need to pay your $35 dollars before you can take him.I paid and took him and when driving to another vet we got 2 minutes out of parking lot and my Sumo died in my arms!!! I am heart sick and so disgusted.I returned to clinic after dropping Sumo off at the other vet for cremation. I asked why was antibiotics were not given and why x-rays were not taken yesterday. Vet just replied sorry were not an emergency vet clinic. I then asked when was he last checked on and how was he in that condition when there was no change at 8am no change at 9am and at 930 am, and they replied no one had checked him since 6pm the night before!!!!!!!!!!!! Please tell me what observation that was!!!!! all she said sorry. Were not a emergency clinic.This was and still is a sick and heart wrenching experience!!! and could of been prevented.If you are not competent and able to care for animals and can not do what is expected, what has been paid for and most importantly what is HUMANE then do not stay in business or practice. Although pets are not humans they are very important to those of us that love them and care for them. IF you are not an emergency clinic then please tell people up front!!!!! Do not waste the precious time for treatment and do not indicate that you are. And certainly do not charge and state precious fur babies will be monitored all night by professionals and then not even lay eyes on them for over 12 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS HORRIBLE AND DISPICABLE!!!! he could of been home being loved on or taken to an EMERGENCY VET as you call it and apparently you ARE NOT.Picked up all the records for my four other fur babies and I WILL NEVER BE RETURNING!!!! and for others save your babies they do not care and are incompetent and unprofessional!!!!!!should of read other reviews apparently I am not the only one that has had a pet die from poor treatment at this clinic. SHAME ON YOU!!

Took my dog in for a groom, and ended up with a poor, mis-shaven, sore dog that's barely herself after sitting five hours in a kennel and getting shots we weren't told she would get all at once. How in the world is that okay? How do you know the dog won't have a reaction? It's happened to us before with the same vet at the same office, only a different dog.Not only that but the "grooming" was hardly that. My dog looks like she went through a chop shop and acts like it, too. Absolutely ridiculous. Awful communication about when she'd be finished as well. This isn't the place to go, use Pipestone or literally anyone else.This place needs to find some new front desk and intake people who care, and actually know what they're doing.

Our p gave us a scare last Saturday, rushed him in to the Animal Health Center of Ottumwa and we were treated extremely well. They got us right in to see the vet and he was treated like he was their own. Dex is a new addition to our family and I'm very pleased to have found the Animal Health Center.

It was a very pleasant experience (for me at least) they got us in right away and I didn't feel quite the same vibe from last vet you can tell difference when someone is passionate on what they do other than an in and out type of deal. I changed vets because this place was not good at all. Every time I called they acted like I was a bother, and they were annoyed with me and my questions. They didn’t explain anything to us, and they missed the issue with my cat which if I hadn’t taken him to another vet he would have died. I was very disappointed with him the service here. I would not bring your animals here.

Athena’s death:I feel they delayed treatment to my pet causing her death. Ever since the new vet took over it has been downhill. Trisha Webb is the vet that managed my babies care. I even had an issue with another one of my pets when the vet didn’t want to listen then too, this office has gone downhill since the old vet retired.Monday I brought my dog to the vet due to her having what seemed to be a seizure but I felt that something else was much more wrong like a blockage. As American Bulldogs are Notorious for chewing on things and my dog was no different and would get into the trash. When I took her in I felt that the new vet did not listen to me and she stated it was just a seizure and was going to put her on medication even though she has never had this issue and has never had a history of it in her bloodline. They ran bloodwork and found nothing abnormal except her WBC being elevated. I ended up taking her back same day and had them do a X-ray, they insisted that it was just seizures and nothing was on the X-ray that they could see that would warrant it being sent to the radiology to read. I felt the vet treated me like an idiot as once again she was trying to explain to me what seizures were and asked if I understood, I then told her yes I’m a nurse and A dog groomer/trainer and I’ve see seizures but there is always typically a cause for them and for it to happen out of nowhere is not normal.Tuesday night my dog projectile vomited all the water I was trying to give her and the little bit of food I convinced her to eat. As she was not eating or drinking since Sunday evening. The seizures had finally stopped but she was still not well and I could tell.Wednesday I told them she was worse so they did another X-ray and sent it out to be read by a radiologist and ended up having to do emergency surgery for an obstruction and they said her intestine was very angry. They then called me Wednesday night and said she wasn’t doing well recovering and that we needed to expect the worse.I’m crying just writing this out, I hope the vet learns to listen to her clients when they are telling her something is wrong. My baby is gone because you didn’t want to listen. I will never go to this vet again and tell everyone I know what happened!! My daughter is still in tears because her best friend is dead all because you wouldn’t listen to your client. Shame on you!

They did a good job with both of our cats we brought in for their annual booster shots and to have their ears check and nails clipped. However, since then, we had a cat with blood in its urine. Unfortunately, you cannot just drop in to the vet any more. You must make an appointment so I had to take my kitty home as I was told the only vet was in surgery that day and I was disappointed when the desk staff asked for payment upfront even before any treatment was done. They appear to want to run this clinic like a people hospital now with running expensive test in order to diagnose. Used to love this place but now disappointed.

I miss when Dr. Matt was here, it’s went downhill since. My cat was having an emergency situation and I explained all the symptoms to their on call veterinarian. We informed him money was literally no object in this situation and we felt he should be seen immediately. He refused and told us to make an appointment for the next morning. I ended up taking him to BluePearl in Des Moines the same night. They definitely agreed it was an emergency situation. I used to refer people here, never again. The vet on call we spoke with had absolutely no compassion.

Called to have a female cat spayed it's 80 dollars which is reasonable and then the up charges came along vaccinations, flea treatments chaaaching. I'm trying to do the right thing and fix this cat, some people cannot afford all of those costs at one time. Next vet !!

Otis, my dog, has been in twice in the last month, once for removal of a cyst on his ear and once for dental cleaning. The staff is always clear on what's involved with procedures and very caring about my comfort and Otis's pre and post. Very satisfied.

Southside Animal Clinic takes great care of my girls. My girls are treated and taken care of by a compassionate staff and Dr. Matt Garver is always willing to listen to any concerns I have about my girls health. My girls boarded for a week at Southside Animal Clinic, they received excellent care, they had play time, they were walked daily, they received love from the staff, and most of all they were loved. I feel comfortable leaving my girls at Southside Animal Clinic when I need to go out of town. I can't thank the staff and the veterinarians who work at Southside enough. Well done!

I have always had a problem since this Dr.Garver took over . I will not take my dog to him ever a again. Two people I know are never going there again either. As word gets around I hope he has to go out of business.
