I've taken my cat and my turtle here and they're amazing I love them. They're always so nice and explain things very well. My turtle had gotten sick and they helped him and even gave him a glove full of warm water when he was given back to me and when my cat got her vaccinations they changed the needle to a smaller one because she started freaking out

Dr Ladehoff has been so compassionate and wonderful to work with. She truly loves animals and is also so good with us adults. Especially during trying times. Can't recommend her or them any higher than I do. They offer so many services.

Most staff have always been wonderful. Since The Vet switched to VCA, it does not seem like they have emergency/after hours services. My family's pet suffered in the early morning, and when we called and expected to hear the emergency option, the message said to call ISU. We were quoted around $1000 to put our pet down. She died on the way to VCA and once we got inside with her body and let them know she'd passed, the desk attendant told us a vet was not in until 7:30 am. It was a heartbreaking situation that I compare to when we've needed after hour care for our pet in the past. Dr. Dreger or someone else was there. It now has a corporation feel.

Had to play God yesterday...a horrible, heart-crushing decision as any pet owner knows...and I can't say how awesome every single person was!!!! Not only did they handle my best friends' last breaths with extreme care and professionalism, but the compassion they showed me was absolutely amazing. To all the gals that helped with Gunner , thank you so much for making a horrible situation bearable !!!!!

My wife took my sons cat here one time was told the 6 year old cat would be fine... a fee days later the cat passed away. Took to different vet was told that the vet had missed something. I WILL NOT TAKE ANOTHER ANIMAL HERE. I don't know if it was the lack of caring or just that they are just that incompetent

Dr Mullen and her team were absolutely amazing today! They took their time with chunk, answered ALL my questions, gave us the best quality care and they were even nice enough to work with our budget. It may be a bit more pricey compared to your normal hometown vet, but the care and compassion they put into their work is definitely worth the price! I’ll definitely be sticking with this vet. They’re knowledgeable, understanding, patient, and just overall an amazing animal clinic. I can’t say enough good things about my experience!

Dr. Mullen was amazing with our male bully who has knee issues. She was on top of explaining everything to us, giving us options and answering every question. One other vet saved my daughters rabbit as well. Completely trustworthy and reliable.

Every since Jacobson and Drager left, this pet hospital has NOT been the same. There are still amazing people who work there and want the best for your animal. But we ended up transfer. Trying to make an appointment that is convenient is hard, plus not being allowed in with your pet. Pets are like our kids so if they need to be at the doctor as a parent I want to be there too.

They do so well with my pets! They treat us just like family and put my concerns first. They saved me in a bind when my cat was really hurting. No other vet in town would help us so promptly. I am very thankful for hometown vet and will not be taking my babies anywhere else!

Always nice to my critters, give plenty of info about procedures they'll be doing and will alert you of average costs before hand.. Which are still cheaper than the vets in florida. Overall great place to take your furry family.

Today I made the switch to another animal care provider. After dealing with the previous ownership and having nothing but better than expected service, things have changed here. It's never fun or easy to change services like this, but after a handful of visits after moving back to the area, it was a no brainer to move.

I would not recommend taking your animals here. My dog had been not felling well for months. Same medicine was prescribed 3 times and no blood work was done. Found out he was diabetic so we decided to switch to a different vet. After our new vet ran blood test we found out he had multiple things going on at that point. He ended up passing away at only 8 years old.

Update: We loved this vet practice for a good number of years when Dr Drager was owner and it was called Animal Clinic-The Vet. Both He & Dr Jacobson were amazing veterinarians and offered after hours on-call emergency services! Once VCA bought the practice the first thing to go was the after hours emergency. Dr Jacobson left to start his own practice and Dr Drager was no longer seeing clients. It was at this point we transferred to The Hometown Vet which Dr Jacobson opened and I have changed my rating to 4 stars for VCA.Original VCA Review-A true home town veterinarian practice. I highly recommend it.

The Veterinarians are kind, compassionate people. I've always had nothing but positive interactions with all 3.I gave only 4 stars, instead of 5, for only 2 reasons. 1- It's always a long wait time at the front desk when I go there. No matter what day or time of day. I am there several times a month to pick up special cat food and meds for my dog. Unfortunately the gals at the desk don't seem to pay attention to or ask who is next in line. They just help whomever shoves through and gets closest to the desk. That's caused me to have to wait for others to conduct their business that should've been after me. Right now it's hard to know where to stand with the construction going on and I've encountered many customers who simply don't care if you were there first and I'm not blunt enough to speak up I guess 🙁 The 2nd thing is that I've had to call twice (on separate occasions) after hours, for a pet emergency. I never received a call back from anyone either time. These incidents happened over a year ago though. I ended up having to call Melbourne Central Veterinary the first time and Conrad's Steckelberg's the second time.We've used this Vet's office for over 15 years and I still use them. I'd even still recommend them. These things have not kept me from going there, but are definitely a couple areas that could be improved!Compared to other Vet's offices I've visited in the area, they seem to be the most technologically advanced and have the most knowledgeable staff. They have capabilities and knowledge that allows them to give you answers or complete procedures and surgeries that other Vet's would have to refer you to have done in Ames or elsewhere. Overall it's a great place for your animal to receive care!

In November 2019 I was informed my little boy had oral cancer. Dr Drager came in and explained all options. He answered my questions completely so I understood everything. I decided to do surgery so I could spend more time with Jasper before saying goodbye. I was blessed to have three more months to love, spoil and make more memories. It was possible because of Dr Drager and his compassion and expertise. I would recommend this clinic to anyone. Only sad Dr Drager has retired. Enjoy as you deserve it! Much thanks for all you did for Jasper and my dog Sasha.

I moved to Marshalltown in 2005 and this clinic has never disappointed. Their friendly service, sincere empathy and superior knowledge make them the best around.

Have trusted our pets to Dr Dennis Drager @ VCA/The Vet for over 30 yrs; he is AMAZING! Has come to the country to vaccinate our puppies, care for adult GSDs, referred us to vet for horses, cared for multiple family cats. Is kind, gentle, genuinely caring. Has given options to myself & daughter for end of life care for pets & euthanized several cats & dogs for our family. Knows these are like one of us. Gives support to the animals at all stages of life as well as to owners during difficult times. Goes above & beyond; obviously an animal lover. Always knows us in public. Recently had Dr Heinrichs work w a new cat of mine-she’s excellent! Calm, gentle, unrushed, wonderful taking time to answer questions. Girls at the desk & the techs are knowledgeable & caring. Can’t say enough good about the staff at this clinic!!

This place is a big joke!! Way over charged me for services that were performed on my lab and held him there just to increase the bill as it went through the roof! They let me make payments on this outrageous bill, and couldn't make the bill for the most 2 months as I'm a single father raising three girls on my own which food in table became more important and they went to a collection agency on me and the bill tripled! Emily that works as the so call manager is the most arrogant and disrespectful person I have ever dealt with!!! It's in your best interest to keep clear of this place!!! The bill literally went up 200 bucks overnight!!! I went in there to take care of this and they weren't willing to work with me a bit! I will do everything in my power to tell everyone I know and next step is to call the bbb on them and if nothing done I'm going to the attorney general! The owner never even called me back to even talk about the matter!!

Absolutely love this clinic. They are never pushy and always very intent on taking the best care of your animals. We actually live in Des Moines and drive to Marshalltown when our animals require care because it is such a great place. Also the prices are so much more reasonable outside of the Des Moines area.

Nothing against dr. Draeger but my cat needed eye surgery for an ulcer and not only did they tack her 3rd eyelid to her eyeball and not fix it but they also gave her a double dose of vaccines because they didnt have their records in order. When i went to get my cats sutures removed from her eye they only told me that her eye will reopen on its own. Its been over a month and now I have to pay more money and get her sedated again just to fix what they messed up. I miss when this place was just The Vet before VCA took over. Ive since switched my cats vet so she gets the care she actually needs.
