Stringtown Grocery is a long time Staple in the Kalona area. A bulk shopping experience at which the products are nicely displayed, clearly organized, and VERY clean. There is a vast selection of the best of many things. Jams, pickles, spices, herbs, and extracts. Candy, nuts, and dried fruit, interesting teas. Locally baked breads, cookies and pies. Bulk natural peanut butter and fresh high quality olive oil. Noodles, varied flours for all baking needs, myriad diverse beans. Oatmeal, grits and granola. It goes on and on. Then duck into the cooler area for meat, produce, cheese and butter. In a lovely area just across the parking lot, there is a beautifully maintained and displayed gardening center. At this time of year (late April), there are many plants for vegetable gardens and bedding plants for flowers. I have been coming to this store for many years, having come to rely on it for stocking my pantry, plant some lovely flower pots, and find unique ingredients for creative cooking. Please be aware that there is a bit of road construction in this area as of April 2024. But honestly, where isn't there?

Bulk items in the grocery store. They only take cash or a check so be prepared. The produce building had reasonably priced veggies. Got 4 medium sized tomatoes for around d $2.50.

Have enjoyed this Amish grocer for decades, both in their current and former locations. One can find very unique ingredients here, such as uncommon dried herbs. Great selection of spices, candy, baking mixes, grains, canning supplies, locally made goods, and cheese. Great for special diets. Wide and clean aisles and fair per pound pricing. Everything is simple and no nonsense, and personally I really appreciate that. Very highly recommended.

There is nothing quite as clean as an Amish business and grocery store. I would use the floor as a plate. The prices are completely reasonable if not under what you would expect. Which was a bkessing. The grocery store has all sorts of seasonings. If you can brainchild a flavor they have a seasoninf of it..like philly cheese steak sandwich seasoning. Not kidding..they have all.sorts of vitamins at a great bargain and salves and soaps and.potions and remedies.. they have a variety of natural leaf teas.. a ton of candy types..i got those wax soda bottles from the 80s that yoy bite and get a tasty treat.. the candy has some mega theowbacks. They have those gross old lady peanut marshmalloe candies and the weird black licorice ones that look more for a mosaic than a vomit bomb of black licorice flavor.. they have even those gross black and orange colored wax paper candy that you 90s kids will remember that were always an awwwwahhh that again yuck.. they have bird seed bird feeders and garden seeds vegetables beans tomatoes corn nasturiums other flowers and etc quite extensive..great seed prices and varieties. They have regular staples of the grocery stores andnthey have produce that is excellent quality. They have assorted cheeses and applications. Honestly i wouldnt want for much living with this being my nearesr grocert store. The staff js well adept and competent and they take pride in their business and jobs ans it shows. Ohhhh how i wish i could take an army of young amish males and fe.ales and have them replace any bumber of places employees we would no longer see a competence issue. These people are wonderful friendly helpful sweet and educated. They are warm and inviting and i am more than happy to spend any dollars i have at their fine businesses.. they are doing it right. I only.wish they offered lessons in self sustaining. I could use it.Thanks for letting me share

I frequent here almost weekly! The staff is helpful, they stock great hard-to-find merchandise like anniversary cards in addition to bulk spices, teas, deli counter, produce, canning supplies, and more! In the spring they fill the parking lot with hanging baskets. Fall it is filled with mums

One of the best dry goods stores I've visited. Bulk spices, flours, baking supplies, and candies plus cheeses, local meats, and local produce. Very busy on Saturdays.

Probably the best Grocery Store I've ever been to, but I didn't like all the people swarming around me like flies on doodoo. They have everything you can think of and probably some things that you can't think of. Their prices ranged from very cheap to expensive, depending on what you want to buy. Their meat was kind of hard to find, but a guy showed me where the cooler was, and I was quite impressed. The meat looked great and was cheap (under $5 a pound for ribeye). I also found some cheese in that cooler that looked really good and it was super cheap. It was cheese shipped directly from some local cheese place in Wisconsin. I highly recommend this place.

The prices are outstanding. The vegetable plants and flowers are wonderful. I can't wait to try the strawberry and cream green tea. The best is they have brick cheese. I will be back.

I live about 30 miles from Stringtown. I go 2-3 times each year. It's a great place to buy spices, dried noodles, barley, locally produced eggs, and bulk candy. The spices are soooo much less expensive than the grocery store! But, the quantities are much larger, so, if you won't use it, it isn't much of a bargain. In season, they also have some very good (large quantity) produce buys. I usually buy a flat of tomatoes each year mid-summer, and give some to friends. In a nearby building, there is a flower and produce market. I go there every spring to buy hanging baskets of flowers for my deck and patio. If you're able to use large quantities of vegetables (perhaps to can), they often have tremendous buys.If you go, be sure to visit the nearby cheese factory & get some cheese curds! They're made a couple of times each week & are still "squeaky" on the days they are produced. (Fridays are always a good bet.) Also close, in the opposite direction, is a unique warehouse that sells outdated dry goods. If you don't mind buying things that are a bit out of date, they have tremendous bargains. I like to buy things that I wouldn't ordinarily try. Some comments have said that everything is locally produced. That's NOT correct. the pies, cookies, eggs, and some potatoes are, but not much else. But, it's still a very unique experience...especially if you come early in the day and can see many Amish moving about via horse and buggy.

Stringtown is a wonderful place to shop. I purchase almost all my cooking & baking supplies, loose teas, powered chicken broth, some meats, vegetables, cheeses, occasionally their handmade bakery goods which are ALWAYS deeelish.Their products are fresh and actually cost less than regular grocery stores. They carry a wide variety of items and have recently added on another "cold refrigerated room full of meats & cheeses. You can buy in bulk on some of their items.I highly recommend shopping here!!!!♥️👍

We come here to stock up on spices, grains, canning, and baking supplies every six months. Great selection of bulk foods at fantastic prices. There is always something tempting like smoked cheese or candy too. The store is lit by skylights and gas lamps

They carry lots of items in a small store. Prices are great. They carry items that you wouldn't necessarily find in your regular grocery. They also break down bulk items and put in smaller containers. They sell local produce, honey and baked goods too. The employees are kind and helpful. Definitely worth the trip.

We did an Amish Tour a few weeks before and a local on the tour told us we had to check this place out, so we came back another weekend to see it and were so glad we did! Amazing array of bulk products. Wife stocked up big time! CASH ONLY! Suspect there may be an annual trip in the books to this place - Even from Eastern Wisconsin, it's worth the Trek!

This is a completely amazing location. Bring lots of cash because it is cash-only and there are enough deals that you are going to want to stock up for months if you don't live close. The prices are completely unbeatable for the majority of dried goods. Last month I bought about 600lbs of food at prices I wouldn't be able to find at any other place in Iowa, to my knowledge, and I have done a lot of research.

We love the awesome selection of bulk food and spices from here. Well worth the drive from Cedar Rapids to replenish specialty baking items, and spices. This is an Amish run business, so quality of items sold is quite high.
