Decent food, but rude and horrible customer service. We felt very unwelcome here. The rest of the staff at Kalona businesses were extremely friendly and so happy to serve us during our day of sightseeing in this beautiful town. We don't know what is wrong with the staff at this store. We will certainly not be back.

My wife and the whole family enjoyed the pleasant shopping experience of the general store. The pie is amazing but sells out early. The merchandise is dated, slightly expensive but is a can't miss opportunity to obtain dutch and farm themed ingredients and products.

Absolutely wonderful environment wide aisle's, very clean excellent service. The prices are so low it just doesn't seem real. Everything is fresh and bagged with easy to read labels. I can't say enough good things about this I would give it 6 stars out of 5!!!

I remember going here when it actually was the general store with everything that a town needed including clothing and fabric. Today was different. It is a nice collection of community made products, many with the Best of Iowa label. I purchased candles and this wonderful cinnamon roll that only made it halfway home.

They just reopened the restaurant-I got the pulled brisket sandwich with your choice of 2 sides out of 5. Very tender and generous sandwich, tasty with bbq sauce and pickles. For $8.99, a deal these days. Amish ‘tater salad and Cole slaw were very good. Friendly staff! Support a local business-I will be back.

Never have I paid $29. For a lunch for 2 with a small portion of Hb and Mac & cheese and a spoon full of canned green beans and a small cup of pudding. They will never see me in there again. Everything in the store was way overpriced. To say we were disappointed is putting mildly.

I was waited on by the rudest person I have ever experienced. I wanted a cinnamon bun and the one on display only was half covered with the topping and nuts.. It was plain to see as the one on display even had the light colored dough showing through. I asked nicely, smiling the entire time if she could cut two from the case because they had more stuff on the top. I was more than twice a much topping.. The sales person argued with me for a few minutes about how it came from the same pan, it was a cornor piece, etc, but it plainly did not have the same amount of nuts and topping. After several minutes of back and forth I finally asked if I she could please cut two from the pan in the case as they had more stuff on it. The woman slammed the door to the case open, threw the top of the pan on the counter and was very rude. She continued to talk sharp and rude as I smiled and said please and thank you. I visit Kalona regularly and I have never witnessed such rudeness and her attitude ruined my trip. My son wanted to explore the town but all I wanted to do was leave. This was at 3:20 on Friday. I think your sales person need some training.

The store is nice but the ladies working were extremely rude! The ladies acted bothered by people coming into the store and glared at customers. I asked a question and got barked at with an answer. When I ordered food they barked at me and made me want to take my money elsewhere. I would not come back just due to rudeness. Hiring employees that scowl and talk down to customers is not a great business model to get customers to return.

The owners & staff are all great. And I really like their menu for the eatery, everything is great! I've recommended them to friends & family & people who didn't know they had an eatery in there.

The workers seemed like they wanted to visit with each other as if the customers were a bother. Any questions were answered quickly and short and then the workers would look back at each other to continue their own conversation. They do have a good variety of premixed spices.

So since it's a Monday (and a rainy one), I was happy to happen upon this store! Most places in Kalona are cash or check only, this nifty stop takes your cards, folks! (Here!! Take my money!)They have everything I love to buy in Kalona here: smoked string cheese, chocolate cheese (the cheese factory was closed since it's Monday), and even an interesting sounding leek and morel cheddar cheese! (That'd be amazing on a burger!!)And since I was hungry, of course I had to read through the cafe menu. I got the best walking taco EVER (added some picked jalapenos... Yum!) and tried their soup of the day: cheeseburger chowder. AND THEIR BAKLAVA!! Everything was fresh, tasty, and totally hit the spot!All three people working were pleasant, conversational, and smooth getting everything done.This is going on my mental list of must-see place to visit in Kalona on every trip now. I'd highly recommend you to also stop by and see what goodies you can find.

A cute town about 25 minutes from Iowa City. The store is in the middle of the Kalona downtown area, so you'll be in a convenient place to walk around. Try the chili--it's fantastic. (April 2018)

A little crowded for me but worth it. What most people don't understand, the expiration date on a lot of items wasn't put there by the government it is there by the company wanting you to buy more. Most of the time it means nothing.
