Took in a little 10lb terrier girl stray. Such a sweetie! She seems to have the staff all charmed already. I am so happy she is there! Knowing that she will be well cared for in the future comforts my soul. Thank you IC Animal Shelter for giving her a second chance on life.

I love visiting the Iowa City Care and Adoption Center! They animals are so well taken care of and happy to see the volunteers and workers. They also have Kids Read to the Kitties on Tuesdays!! Everyone is just so wonderful there . It's a great place to volunteer also.

I found my best friend here. I was in need of a cat that would get along with my dog and would be able to help me with my anxiety, and the staff went above and beyond to help me. I met a few different cats, but they helped me narrow down and find the perfect one for me. They even comforted me when I made a bond with a cat who eventually got adopted before I could decide.. which was ultimately for the best because I found my Delta, previously named Jargon. Without the Iowa City Animal Shelter, I would have never found my perfect match, for my dog, and for myself. I couldn’t thank them enough for changing my life and this wonderful cats’ life.

Had a good experience here. The staff was very helpful and made the adoption process go super smoothly. My husband and I love our newest family member, and have overall enjoyed our experience here. Gershwin is settling in very well and all the info they gave us made his transition to our home go amazingly.

I adopted MacKenzie 3 months ago and she has been the perfect addition to my home. The adoption process was straightforward but also had enough barriers to make sure we were a good fit before I took her home, which is really important for the safety of the animals. She loves her big brother Harry so much and has brought so much joy into our lives

Absolutely love this shelter! I just started volunteering here and have been very impressed with the care and cleanliness kept in mind for the animals here. I have only worked with the cats, but assume the same can be said for the dog side. After volunteering and going to many shelters, I can confidently say this is the cleanest, most organized shelter I’ve ever been to. It’s never fun to see animals in shelters instead of homes, but ICAC does such a great job giving their animals a lot of space to explore and keeping their enclosures clean and safe for the animals.Seeing the high volume of volunteers makes me happy as well since the full time staff is small, it’s comforting to know the volunteers give the animals a lot of attention so staff can hold down the fort and do everything they need to keep the shelter running.

We've adopted 3 kitties over all from this shelter and every time our experience has been phenomenal. The fact that they come vaccinated, fixed and chipped all for only $75 is a steal of a deal. AND you get one free vet visit. What more could you ask for? One time our cat got out and brought here and they updated her rabies vaccination for me and made picking her back up extremely easy. People that complain about the "jerk" at the front desk need to realize that he is probably consistently overwhelmed by both the volume of animals that come through here as well as the number of people that truly shouldn't have animals and yet think they "deserve" to be able to adopt. And just because he doesn't smile and give out niceties doesn't mean he isn't professional and damn good at his job. Also, people that complain about the process need to recognize that they state very explicitly on their website the steps one needs to go through to be able to adopt from here. With any reputable breeder there would be a specific process to go through as well. One that would generally takes weeks or months or sometimes years before you go home with a pet. Not being able to go home with an animal the same day you fall in love with it shows that you have taken the time to ride through your emotions and ensure that you are making a good decision to take on a new and big responsibility. I trust this shelter's judgement. I think most people that are upset with them are probably the truly problematic ones that have no respect for rules or protocol and need someone else to blame when things don't go their way.

I was thinking I would never find another fur baby. Beil stole my heart, I thought I lived too far away to take her home the same day. The staff worked hard to let me adopt the same day . I will be forever grateful 💕

Excellent facility and caring staff. We drove an hour and a half to meet a potential new family member and were very impressed with the building and staff. Everything was clean and the animals had exceptional care. Staff was thorough in checking up on us to make sure we were a good fit for our new furbaby and they allowed us to bring in our other pet for the meet and greet. Wonderful experience all around. If our boy could contribute to this review, I'm sure he'd have nothing but great things to say about the people that cared for him here.

Recently adopted a sweet puppy and was a smooth process. The shelter was clean and staff was friendly. The adption fee is much more reasonable than other shelters and includes spay/neuter, microchip, a decent number of vaccinations depending on age of dog as well as 2 free certificates for wellness check up at 2 different vets in Iowa City and some free dog obedience classes. Great experience -- would definitely recommend.

Very disappointed☹️. We would not recommend this place for an adoption. Staff seems very rude and reluctant to work with adopters. Also very judgmental. Filled out an application to adopt a cat and never got to meet because we have a diabetic daughter who was looking to adopt a cat from here and we got told they are sorry she’s diabetic but that she should choose another animal because they didn’t feel a cat was appropriate for her. Not even willing to work with us or give us other options. I’ve seen better compassion at McDonald’s! Minus -1 star🙁

Great place. Kittens we got, not many days it took. Lots of friendly people. Would adopt, donate, or volunteer anytime I would.

Refuses to return a dog back to the original breeder even after they reached out saying they would take their dog back. Why is there any need for ANY kind of dog in shelter when their priority should be to give these dogs a proper home. A shelter is no home for any dog especially just to keep him because of people’s selfishness

This week I had the best volunteer and staff help me with my adoption of Dorian. They gave me so much support and I saw their interactions with others. Amazing place!

Filled out application for a particular dog. Never let me meet the dog, but states she is not a good fit for us. Ok, Im fine with that. Inquired about a puppy, they told me they would call me for an appointment to meet the puppies. No call. Still waiting. Their overall attitude seems a bit judgemental. I'm a medical provider. I've had dogs my whole life, & I would prefer rescues. We take impeccable care of our pets. A misunderstanding perhaps? It's fine. I'll go elsewhere. I'm just very disappointed in the Iowa city animal shelter.

You can tell the staff here really cares about the animals. Even though we weren't able to take a dog home due to the interactions with our current dog, I'd recommend checking this group out when looking to add a fur baby to your home.

It is truly shameful what they have done in regards to the Saluki that cane to the shelter and them denying it a safe, happy, healthy home with its breeder for money and to make breeders look bad. While unethical backyard breeders do exist and are prominent, unethical rescues are out there too and this a perfect example of it. DO NOT ADOPT, DONATE, OR SUPPORT THEM IN ANY WAY

Staff were helpful. They explained that the Great Pyrenees/lab mix we were interested in would not be safe around other dogs at the dog park. Also not necessarily safe for our cat. We had to say no although he is a sweet and affectionate dog. A sad but necessary decision.

Awesome! Adopted Eleven about a week ago. She's a great kitty and has brought much joy to our life and loves it here. We built her a cat runaway and she loves the birds. Safe to say she's pretty spoiled. ♥️♥️

A little bit of miscommunication had inconvenienced my partner and I, but most of the staff were accommodating to our full time schedules. In the end of what seemed to be a long journey, we decided to get not one, but TWO kittens. They take good care of the animals, the area around said animals, and customers. They have lots of information on the animals and how to care for them, which was nice since these are my first cats. The staff was very patient while my partner and I were choosing our kittens. Not to mention they have so many kittens to choose from. Nice people, I recommend this place to anyone! Keep it up guys!

Staff are very kind, friendly and informative. We made an appointment and got to meet a senior cat who adopted us. There is a very detailed application process so expect to have several days to a week wait. Wonderful way to be sure you and your furry friend are right for each other.

They are intentionally holding a Saluki in their facility whose breeder is desperately trying to have their dog returned to them, refusing to work with the breeder or breed specific rescue instead of freeing up the spot for a dog who actually needs rescuing. Truly despicable behavior.

Be aware, this IS a kill shelter. They will happily kill any animal they deem "unadoptable". Like the "aggressively friendly" cat that was brought in recently, but who didn't deal with cages very well. CRAZY concept. Doesn't do well around other cats. Cats being territorial?? NOWAY! They said no problem, they can put him in the "barn program". Well, that was a lie. They put him down the same day. They do not care about any animal. They don't care about adopting out. They may not kill animals for more space, but they have no qualms about killing them for literally any other reason. RIP kitty.

They keep deleting comments and blocking people who take issue with the inappropriate handling of a Saluki that was mandated to go back to its breeder.Just shows how unethical and unprofessional this shelter is. Deleting things just proves you know you messed up.

Our first adoption took place in 2008 and our most recent is this year, 2022. The transformation of this organization over this time has been amazing. They have always been wonderful, but it is a pleasure to watch them grow. Looking forward to the future.

A bright location with friendly and helpful staff and volunteers. They will gladly let you meet any cat, dog, rabbit, or Guinea pigs. I love the cat rooms that you are able to just go into to interact with some of the nicest and friendliest cats. However, some rooms at the center are poorly ventilated and are stuffy. Parking space is also limited and you might have to park slightly further away when they're busy. When adopting they will gladly inform you of who and what the pet needs to ensure you will be satisfied with your choice. To check the availability of pets at the shelter, you can simply check their website.

The staff member I delt with had long hair and a long beard, real skinny. He was kinda rude and even raises his voice in a rude agrivated manor when I misheard something he said. We also were having someone pay the fee over phone and he wrote all there card information down on a piece of paper? Just a little sketchy tbh. All and all a good place and good staff I just had a awful interaction this time.
