I think, no, I'm sure the sandwich I had at Sandwich Bowl is the best I've ever had. It was my first time there after passing this place up a few times. I opted for the Italian as they were out of soup (if the soup is half as good as the sammies, I can see why). This sandwich, though...this sandwich was stacked with fantastic meats, veggies, cheese, Italian dressing and a savory bread. To compare this sandwich to a chain shop's equivalent would be doing a disservice to the quality of the ingredients and flavor of their food. The atmosphere is eclectic in a historic building and the service was very accomodating and fast! Do not pass this amazing gem up!!!

Our downfall was that we were in a hurry and didn't realize it would take 25 minutes to get a sandwich. When we entered, there were 4 customers eating inside, 5 tables covered in un-tended dishes, and one table clean and available. They needed another employee to bus the tables. However, when the sandwiches finally arrived, they were extraordinary. My wife never had a Reuben like this one. I had a Flying Pig, with spicy pepperoni, thin sliced pork loin,bacon, sauce and an excellent roll. The prices are reasonable. We both took half of our sandwiches home for dinner. So, when we return to Harlan, we will be forced to return here because we are now slaves to the food. We'll leave more time for lunch!

Amazing hot and cold sandwiches and home made soups. It is slow. It is always slow, and that's how it is. As long as you know that up front, it's great. The burgers are the best in town, but no french fries.

Love this place. A great little restaurant on the square. Delicious sandwiches and salads. The "BATH" and Roast Beast sandwiches are some of the best. Try the Chicken salad in a bowl! Don't skip the dessert options. They are homemade and always delicious.

Great food! Excellent service. They are doing such a great job trying to keep the community safe. Do I agree with their mask mandate? NOPE. Am I going to give up eating some FORKING AWESOME food because I need to wear a mask while I'm ordering my food? NOPE. Keep it up Randy and staff! You've got a whole community behind you and we LOVE that you're still here to serve our community.

What a great company with nothing but compassion in there love for there restaurants and safety of customer! I am so grateful that a family owned company with such a superior customer service and high integrity in there work can survive in such a trying time! Business like this deserve nothing but respect for not letting these trying times change there morals or lower there standards of safety for them and those around them. A friend and I rode our Harley's to Harlan IA this sandwich shop was recommended to us as a good place to try. Considering most small cities have let up a bit on the mask mandates we had no idea we would need a mask to eat at this establishment. We walked in and the young woman working the counter about had a stroke and ran half way across the store to slap a disposable mask in our hands. Then it was another 10 minutes before she even got around to taking our order and then made it very clear that it was take out only despite a sign on your window saying welcome back dining room open. Apparently it was not open for us and we ended up having to take our food a couple doors down to a little bar who showed us a bit more friendly welcome then we got at the Sandwich Bowl. To add insult to injury as the saying goes, I am a fan of Philly Cheesesteak sandwich's and would have expected the Philly to have been outstanding. Sadly I have had better Philly's at Subway. Point being I would not recommend eating at the Sandwich Bowl in Harlan IA if your looking for a friendly welcoming environment.Gotta love the world we live in today, check out the response I got from the owner of this place, guess the customer is always right does not apply here. First I did not chose to wait 10 minutes to place my order that was kind of done by their staff. Second being forced to wear the mask was not as big of issue as how we were treated, but as you can see the owner's solution to this is to recommend I go to their competition Subway rather than look at how to treat a customer better. Have no worries owner of the Sandwich Bowl, I will ensure I tell everyone I know how you treat your customers and ensure if I am ever in Harlan Iowa again I will eat anywhere but your shop.

First time in Harlan and would definitely come back for Sandwich Bowl! I had the best French dip and amazing potato soup. My husband had the bacon Mac and cheese burger and loved it. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. Next time we are on another road trip through Iowa we will be making our way back here!

I am greatly hearted by the persistence of this company to continue protecting their employees and patrons with requiring masks, even if the mandate has not been renewed. If you care about those around you, support the businesses that are doing the best they can for you and the people you love! Oh yeah, they also make TERRIFIC food! WIN/WIN!

My wife went there today to pick up lunch for our family and was refused service because she wouldn't wear a mask. She has a health condition that she cannot wear a mask. Our state has no mask mandate and the city where this restaurant is located has no mask mandate. We have eaten at several restaurants in this town and have never been told we have to wear a mask. I'd like to add. I just spoke to my lawyer and he stated it is illegal to require a mask of a person that has health conditions, when there is no state and/or local mandate. He will be in contact with this eatery. The owner has responded with we have a drive up. Well we weren't even told that. The employee seemed more worried about making sure their unlawful requirements were followed than gaining business. Again the mask requirement is ILLEGAL and I have contacted my attorney

Delicious as always!! I have tried a few different things off the menu (I'm very picky) and so far everything has been great, but my go to is always the River Bottom salad. I would add a pic, but I don't remember until its gone. Lol. You'll just have to give it a try for yourself.

First impressions was cold. Patricia, the front counter woman was RUDE!!! We ordered a hamburger vegetabe bowl and a chicken chili bread bowl. The hamburger vegetable soup was nothing to write home about. The chicken chili was luke warm and gritty. The bread bowl was heavy. Two soups and no drinks cost over $16.00. Could have gone to McDonald's and gotten a better lunch. Don't waste your time...or your money.

I believe we should do all we can to help small businesses especially in times like these. I believe in support your community. What i don’t believe is when i called in my order the lady actually said there is a $1.50 charge for meat shortage. ?? WHAT ?? like i need to pay more than i already am from this lockdown ?? IS THIS REAL ? I was calling in for 8 of us!! I hope loosing over $100.00 sale is worth the $12.00 you are trying to gouge your customers out of . never been here.!! never will!! FYI PRICE GOUGING IS ILLEGAL IN THE UNITED STATES DURING CIVIL EMERGENCIES !! ITS A FELONY !!

It's really refreshing to not see crowds of people in a small town such as Harlan IA spilling into the same old boring, predictable, stale tasting Subway or greasy, unhealthy McDonald's. Instead, the local Sandwich Bowl gives hope to other small business owners and future operators that they can still survive and in this business's case...thrive! Great job is an understatement!

Terrific, they have all kinds of different sandwiches. The nostalgia art on the wall kept you looking at different things from the past. I would recommend this eatery to anyone.
