I was actually on my way to another hardware/garden store but saw this place and stopped. The staff was eager to help me find what I needed and the prices were hard to beat! The store is strategically laid out and everything was easy to find. I really loved the products they had available here. Will definitely come back as gardening season progresses!

Had all 19 of my window screens replaced and they did a great job. They were $100 cheaper than Ace hardware and got them all done in 4 days. Very happy customer 👍🏻

This place is horrible and do not recommend. The staff is too young or too old to be helpful and they put clearance prices on products and then don't honor the clearance prices at the register. Then the manager wants to be an a$$-hat about it and says take it or leave it, wow that's great customer service! What a scam to take people's hard earned money by putting sale prices on items and then not honoring it. I hope the dollar you saved yourself was worth this review!

Porter Hardware is a hidden (or not so hidden) gem of Des Moines!My husband and I live in Altoona and do a lot of home and yard projects but don’t have the space or money for a slew of specialty items, so I was thrilled to learn we have such a great rental resource just down the road. They offer an unexpectedly vast array of tools, services, and equipment for rent or purchase for almost any kind of home & yard project we could hope to tackle (which so far has included chainsaw maintenance, tree trimming, wood chopping, lawn aerating, bathroom remodels, & pouring concrete pads just to name a few,) and every employee I’ve interacted with at the store or on the phone has been very friendly and helpful. The tools and machines we’ve rented have always been in good condition and the pricing is fair; basically all the amenities of a big box store with the atmosphere of a mom & pop.

I went to Porter Hardware for kerosene. Unfortunately their tank was empty. Since I drove from Knoxville the owner/manager "Tim" was extremely apologetic and gave me his card and offered a discount when I returned. Super nice guy and friendly.

Great small town feel. Slightly more expensive than Menards but like to spread the love. They have almost anything I am looking for. They have a repair shop which is very handy.

Brought several pieces of equipment to them for different repairs. Had to bring everyone of them back to them cause they forgot to fix something on it. Talked to manager/owner told my wife he wasn't going to listen to my wife get upset. Don't take your equipment to get repaired here cause they don't listen to their customers

Fantastic friendly customer service!! Will shop local to get assistance even if prices are higher than the chain stores where you are lucky to find anyone to help. New to this part of Des Moines, and glad I walked in!!! They even answer the phone if you call!! And get a person not a " menu" That's how customer service was years ago everywhere!! 10 stars!!!

Would not recommend the service department. Went in for an oil leak and put a note on the ticket to call for any other repairs. They did not call, did several unauthorized repairs (even put on new blades which i had at home), and merely replied with "sorry." The front desk folks were reasonably helpful. Unless you want to spend half of your mowers value on repairs, go somewhere else.

Albert assisted me with my equipment rental. He was helpful and knowledgeable about the equipment and procedures. I knew from the beginning that I was dealing with someone that really cared about the customers and the reputation of Porter HardwareMy experience was like a small business in a small town and definitely more personal than a big chain store.I see they have a few negative reviews, but I think that it's the authors of those reviews loss if they don't go back to Porters. I've owned a small business for over 30 years and I know that- when you do great business, you sometimes get really busy. It's tough being the little fish in a big pond, but when you care about the customers the way that Porter does, you get a lot of business.The people that wrote the negative reviews don't realize that the reason for the delay on the phones is because of the high demand for Porter's high quality service. Nobody is perfect, but Porter's doing great and I will always be a customer from this day forward.Thumbs up Porter, Keep up the great work!!that takes pride in their I had a great experience and will be back for sure.

Couldn't find any repair tape at the 3 places I went that was close to me. Also the Hardware Store I used to go to closed, so I went to Porters and my search for repair tape ended. Porters have everything you need and prices are actually very reasonable. Helpful Staff also plenty of parking,and easy to access.

Outstanding neighborhood hardware store. Staff are very well-trained, greet you as you come in, know where everything can be found, and amazingly knowledgeable. You can rent almost any piece of equipment you might ever need. In the spring, their garden center is better than most, and they source their plants locally.

Great hardware store, clean friendly and helpful. They also have kerosene reasonably priced very convenient when I need fuel for my heater. Faster than Menards or Lows. Get in and get out !

I took a window in to be repaired and was told it would take 1 week. So I called a week later and was told it would be another week. This went on for 3 weeks. On the fourth week I was told my window was lost. It was found a short time later and I was told it was done and ready for pick up. When I got there to pick it up the glazing still hadn't dried. I would recommend going to Highland Park hardware as they promise 24 hr service.

Terrible experience with service manager, KC. IF I COULD GIVE NEGATIVE STARS, I WOULD!!! I dropped off riding mower 4 weeks ago. Heard nothing from anyone for three weeks. Last week I called and was put on hold forever, so I called back. Twice I left my number and did not receive a call back. Finally, I had to just go there to get any answers. KC was rude and disorganized. He could not find my paperwork at first, until he searched through 7 or 8 stacks of service tickets. finally, his only answer was "our policy is to work on equipment bought here before other equipment". At this rate, I will never get my mower fixed. I am going back today with my trailer to pick up my broken mower, and I will never set foot in there again.

My 69 year old friend went to porters for a starter for her push lawnmower so she told them what she had and sold her a 175.00 starter for a rider we went to take it back they told her no return they took advantage of my friend so she is out 175.00 and no lawnmower to cut her grass me and all my friends will be no longer shopping at porters they need more qualified help cause what they got now won't worknow

Fast friendly service. Great community store. Knowledge staff and a wide variety of merchandise: paint and paint supplies, tools and power tools. Lawn care products, lawn feed, manure, lyme, and fertilizer. Electric parts and pieces. Building stuff too.

Recently had my mower tuned for the 2018 season. They picked the mower up at my house, tuned it and then delivered back to my house. Money well spent. Besides being new, this is the best my mower has looked and ran in a couple of years. Service manager KC was great to do business with.

Rented a tool from this place since it was a local place and not home depot but should of went to home depot instead. Home depot what a given me a military discount .Next time I'll deal with HOME DEPOT . They appreciate what our military has done for us.PORTERS HARDWARE Must of forgot how they got their freedom.

Great hardware store. Very friendly people, helpful and knowledge about many of the projects I've worked on. Usually have the unique parts you need and if they don't have it in stock. They will find it and order it for you!

They are open earlier than most which is convenient. They carry a better than most selection of bolts. Always been treated with respect by their employees. One of the few remaining hardware stores.

Shopping here is a pleasure. Great prices and the staff is so helpful and friendly. One of there staff, Rick, was very knowledgeable and helpful. He save me money with his suggestions and teaching me that I could do it myself, which really saved.
