Oh nice, good to know if there was a fire or emergency, you can't get out on this side. It's just sad. Each door keeps getting closed down one by one. Come here because it's accessible and easy and now it just keeps getting shut down, long waits at self check out because you need approval for everything. Amongst aother things. Won't be making this my primary store much longer.

The front door was closed so we had to use the side entrance. We were in Des Moines for the weekend and staying close to downtown. We were happy to find Hyvee located nearby where we could get alcohol and munchies. We were surprised at the fact that they didn’t have much of a selection of shooters, and the lady behind the register said there was a shortage of some type. Either way it’s a grocery store with a large selection of alcohol. They did have an officer on stand by so we felt safe.

Sorry excuse for a grocery store. Very little selection. This is largely the result of them trying to sell their garbage ready to eat food. Then there’s the hours, they close by 7pm. Looking forward to the day Hy-Vee closes this store and sells it a worthwhile company.

Visited on 4/7/24, nicer store location than most. Went in there to get a store brand 2-liter and what's weird is they charge .88 cents (advertised with using fuel saver, that didn't apply the discount) for what I can get for .77 cents (with fuel saver) at other stores I've gone to since they changed the membership program half year back.

Insufficient exits in the event of an emergency. The one door they do allow to stay open is so slow I literally run into it all the time. Hours are in violation of lease and on top of that they’ve essentially made downtown a food desert. Just a disaster. If you can’t serve the community then you need to leave. We don’t want you here anymore.

I like this store for all of the different take out food options they offer, but every time I look at my produce when I get home it’s always moldy or nasty. I need to look closer when I’m in the store, but I’m in a hurry most of the time. I paid $7 for the grapes in the picture. Plus, the store is open until 9pm but all the departments close between 6pm-8pm? It’s pointless to me. Parking lot is always full of trash everywhere , and homeless people always outside. This store is poorly managed

I went to this store on 2/5/24 at ~6:15pm only to find it closed. Hy-vee originally purchased this land at a grossly reduced cost because it made an agreement with the city to be open during certain times, unless (and until) reduced hours were approved in writing by the city. There was no formal request by Hy-vee to change the hours on 2/5. After pushback, Hy-vee quietly changed the hours from 8a-6p to the current 7a-7p.Hy-vee has a monopoly in the city, and―unfortunately―I will have to continue shopping there to a limited extent. However, I will never be shopping at this location again.

Changing the hours to close at 6 PM was very disappointing. It makes it too difficult to get in the door before closing time, or for this to be my usual grocery store despite not living far away. I’d like to return as a regular customer when/if your hours go back to closing at 8 or 9, but right now I just feel that I’ve been pushed out.

This Hy-Vee is okay if you live downtown but I constantly have to make sure I don’t get expired food I just was eating and the salsa tasted funny and I looked and it was a week old. That’s really what prompted this over due review. I realized how bad this was about a little over a year ago when I got something and I looked at the expiration date of something but it was bad then I looked at the rest of the things on the shelf and same thing they were all bad so I went to the customer service desk told them and the lady said okay and said she would have some one look into it. I came back the next day to see and they were still there that’s when I stopped going there for a long time. Really it’s my fault for going back to get a couple things here and there expecting to not get the same results. I don’t like being critical of places or taking the time to do reviews but certain things you just have to speak up about because it’s just not right. that’s how people get sick.Found more items expired 2 weeks later9 and 10 days old

Been coming to this Hy Vee for the last 5 years just for the pizza. Always been fantastic with great service. until the last couple months when some one new took over. The last 3 times I’ve come in to get lunch(pizza) either something is broken & or the service is lack luster at best.

The downtown Hy-Vee when it first opened was a destination location. Access to groceries and on the spot meals was top of the line. The staff was plentiful and always so helpful. Now, several years after opening it is a shell of what it used to be, access to meals is limited (the food is still good) and you're lucky to find someone to help you in the aisles. The self checkout is only as good as the availability of someone to assist you. If you need to be ID'd for alcohol or have a correction made ... which means you're often left waiting. The impact of the Covid Pandemic and its impact created chalĺenges for many businesses. Yet, a full-service grocery store and one with the past quality reputation of Hy-Vee as being responsive to its customers need to go back to its roots of having more helpful smiles in at least a few more aisles.

Super disappointed by the change in hours. Who groceries shops before 6pm. I’m not sure why they changed the hours? Definitely won’t be going here because i can’t get there that early. I bet they open up later eventually. . I can’t imagine them making money when it’s closed that early. Half their business will probably leave.

It's an alright place to shop. It's downtown and has a smaller selection than some hyvees. Nice liquor aisle thought. Also can be a tad pricey. Good for a quick shop

I usually do my shopping around 6am because I work nights and get off at 5 so I am incredibly disappointed with the recent change in the hours. I don’t mind having to drive to a different Hyvee or even Walmart but I really enjoyed the convenience of being able to walk to this Hyvee.

The store suddenly and randomly changed the closing time to 6 pm from 9 pm. They have not updated their closing time online. These limited hours are extremely inconvenient for people who work until 5:30 pm. The artificial wall of wine bottles is also very inconvenient. Will be looking forward to moving soon so I no longer have to shop at this location.

A downtown grocery store that closes at 6pm might as well not even be there. Most hyvees in residential areas are open till 11pm and the latest this one's ever been open is 9pm and now closing at 6pm suddenly. It's surrounded by businesses open till at least 9pm and later on the weekends and all the late hours foot traffic including residents of the area many of which don't have cars. This is ridiculous. What's the point of this location anymore.

They lock up at least 20 minutes before their listed hours. Maybe list the hours when you start locking things, yeah? Or, consider this, run the store at the hours the city told you to run them at.

First time in a Hy-Vee, but must note that it’s very nice and clean. Gives off the Whole Foods vibes. Anyways, came from another state over to pick up the Mountain Dew Hard Sodas, since they are only sold in three states. Great store!

Arrogant employees with few choicesof product. Small inner city store. I bet they get most their business cuz there no other decent grocery store downtown. Put another store downtown that can sell big store prices n one will close

I ordered a cookie cake for pickup online a few days prior to arriving in Des Moines. I showed up to pick up the cookie cake at the appointed time and they didn't have it. The bakery associate had a manager come explain our options. They were able to get one from another store and deliver us to us in 1-2 hours. Thank you Andrew for addressing the issue and offering an easy fix.

Went there to pick up some perscriptions that I had filled there for years, and they suddenly decided to make a artificial baricade of wine bottles between the parking lot entrance to the pharmacy. I found this peculiar, so I moved them out of the way to conduct my business. I had to wait 20 minutes, so I left and came back. The baricade came back, and the security guard told me not to please not do that again. So I cancelled all my prescriptions, and asked to see the manager.I told him I’m cancelling all my prescriptions because they obviously didn’t care about my business by inconveniencing me artificially baricading my way to the pharmacy via wine bottles.Paul, the manager, told me he didn’t care. The security guard sure didn’t care. Hyvee didn’t care. The pharmacists and the customer service people were nice to me about it, and seemed to understand my grievance. But the store manager, the security guard, and Hyvee didn’t care.Edit: Attempted to contact the email they provided to discuss this issue. I even gave them my phone number, but never heard back. So I think I’m definitely right that they don’t actually care.Edit upon edit: So I guess I had one more prescription at this Hy-vee, so I went in again. Once again, they had a makeshift barricade of wine between me and my prescription. So I walked around the entire store to go ahead and cancel my prescription. The pharmacists were understanding, as it’s apparently a known issue, and I was advised to make sure management knew about this known issue.so I did. I asked for the store manager, who was not there, but I did speak with the assistant store manager, who was very understanding. She said they plan on building a permanent wall between the entrance and the pharmacy as the alcohol department is losing about a 100,000 in theft per year because of the location of the alcohol department.I am sympathetic to this reasoning, but putting a barrier up between the entrance to the pharmacy department is stupid, and is a lazy solution to this problem. If that is an issue than they should move the alcohol department to a place where it can’t get easily stolen. Or better yet, open up a separate store just for alcohol instead of putting up walls from the entrance to the pharmacy.I’m still extremely annoyed by this, twice over, especially as Hyvee has not responded to my email about this issue. I was given the name of Brent Shelman as the regional manager, and I look forward to hearing from him via the email I replied with. The assistant manager did not have his email or phone number.Sincerely,Michael Harmsen

They close way too early to be an asset to the downtown community. The city needs to boot them out if they plan to keep residents wanting to move down here. Hyvee has been a huge disappointment

The downtown location is fairly costly; however, the employees are very helpful & always seem to be in a good mood.GREAT looking meats!NOT MUCH in the Cosmetic section. This place is great to go sit, have a lunch & a drink & take a break from being outside in the summer heat! Then grab your groceries before you leave. As expensive as it is....- EAT THERE!- RELAX FOR A BIT WITH A DRINK!- GRAB YOU GROCERIES WHEN DONE!- THEN GO HOME & RELAX WITHOUT CLEAN UP!

Many items in the store, that are perishable, are missing their expiration dates on the packaging. I bought expired cream cheese weeks ago that was missing an expiration date on the package, and now I have jelly that's gone bad sooner than expected. Both without expiration dates. What's with this?
