So small town hidden gem!!! Prices are a hard not to stop in and have an amazing meal!!! Prices are beyond reasonable!!! Great service, great service, very welcoming and the customers were also very polite. It looks very deceiving the size of it . You walk in and see only 6 to 7 booths then they have another area in the back to the left with plenty of seating!!! Waiter was very welcoming, very polite and helpful explaining item I had a question about on the menu. We started out with the deep fried pickles and fried mushrooms at $5 a piece. My son got the 6oz sirloin with hash browns, eggs and toast for only $10.25 couldn't believe it. I got the double bacon cheese burger with swirl fries and never seen them before and they were amazing for $10 and my buddy got this insane sandwich I believed to be called the Crafty Daddy sandwich and fries for a insanely cheap price of $10.25.Let me tell you about this Crafty Daddy sandwich which I will show the picture of, it's a massive size tenderloin with a 6 to 8 oz burger on top along with 3 different types of cheese and all the fixings honestly this can be made into 2 meals easily. For the people that like just water with meals which I do and I'm very picky on my water and it was amazing with a slice of lemon because I enjoy the lemon but tastes amazing without the lemon.I can't say more positive things about this little hidden gem in Colfax, IA and for the sweet tooth they also have ice cream!!!

The food is amazing & extremely well priced. I ordered the ribeye breakfast that comes with the ribeye, 3 eggs, hash browns, & toast for only $13.99! The waitress with the short, dark hair was very nice, polite, attentive, & quick, even though she was obviously quite busy. The steak was cooked perfectly & so were the over easy eggs. If I'm ever in the area again I'll definitely be stopping by!

The lady with the short black hair was very rude. She would be super rude to me and my dad then go over to the table over and suddenly be super nice. She slammed our plates and steak sauce on the table and was very snappy with our orders, as well as giving us dirty looks. The other waiters there are always super nice but for some reason when I eat there she is incredibly rude whenever she serves me. She had no problem getting other people's drinks and orders, but when it came to us saying we are ready to order, she told us to wait and then told another customer, and I quote, "Some people just don't understand that we only have two people working right now." RIGHT IN FRONT OF US.

Stopped in for late breakfast on a Sunday driving across Iowa. Good crowd, but no waiting. Friendly, attentive staff. Had a simple Denver omelet and orange juice. Generous portions, tasted great.

So as for the two stars on food I would say that biscuits and gravy should not come out of a can it probably should be homemade it isn't really that hard to do and it's sort of cheaper than buying it out of a can I gave you a perfect stars on service and atmosphere and overall I give you four stars but you are a restaurant for the most part I understand you really an ice cream shop on the side there but I've had food there other than just the biscuits and gravy and I judge restaurants on their biscuits and gravy you can tell if somebody has a passion for doing their what they do based on biscuits and gravy

The short haired woman who owns this building is very rude and will ruin your order almost seeming like she does it on purpose. I have been a loyal customer to this business for almost 20 years seeing multiple different people own it and have never had a problem like I have with this woman. A lot of people from this town complain about her on Facebook and she still doesn’t seem to get the hint. If she would simply remove herself she would have a way better chance of keeping loyal customers (who tip very well might I add). I try my best to avoid coming when she is working but lately she seems to be there every-time so I give up trying to order from here anymore. She tips herself when you use a card, it even says so on a sign there. She is very dirty and I have not seen her wash her hands before preparing orders and she does not wear gloves. Would love to see this business do as well as they have in the past but with her being there it is unlikely that will happen. I feel bad for the men that work there as they are always very polite and patient. She just seems to have a problem with every customer unless it’s someone well known from town that she knows people will listen to.Kid-friendliness: She is very rude to kids and acts very impatient.

I was greeted warmly. The greeter served my drink immediately. I asked if they have soup and they did, the host brought the soup out even before my server came over, I thought that was impressive since I was very hungry. I ordered the noodle beef soup. It was hot and delicious, not too greasy not too salty. He said he really liked the soup I was having. The hispanic server was friendly and checked on me frequently. Place was clean. Plenty of parking right in the front, that was convenient. You guys earned five stars.

I had my granddaughter with me and we had just left the Colfax Pool. As we came towards the Cathy Shack she said " You probably wouldn't want to stop and get me a cookie dough ice cream cone or cup, would you"? So I pulled in of course! She was happy & told me "I was the best grandma"! Of course I am! I thought it was kinda pricey though. I got a small ic cone & she got a medium cup of ice cream, and it cost me $7.00! Besides that, it was good and I got brownie points from my granddaughter! Win win! I stopped in to grab a cheeseburger, and the lady behind the counter was kind of rude. Maybe she was having a bad night, but she didn't need to ruin my night too. It was $6 for a cheeseburger that was kinda big, but it was pretty greasy & both buns were soggy by the time I got home 15 min later. It wasn't too bad when I ate it though! I was hungry!

Stopped with some friends who were hesitant about entering the restaurant. By the end of the meal, they all said they would be back. Great service even with a packed house! Food came quickly, was hot and extremely delicious! Better than Mom used to make! Clean restroom too! Highly recommended! If you’re in town and really hungry, give them a try! Simply one of the best!!!

Good ice cream, however, the employees should be wearing masks or even face shields while making ice cream for their customers. Safety first during a pandemic! Covid 19 is serious stuff.

We stopped in for lunch. I was not expecting much today but it was great local cooking the food was hot and tasty and my son loved the ice cream. I was wishing the weather was better so we could have used the window but we were happy none the less. Great little spot!

If travelers on I-80 East of Des Moines, at the Colfax exit, knew how close they are to the Kratty Shack, McDonald’s would go out of business! Fresh food prepared upon order, friendly, family-owned restaurant! Choose from breakfast served all day, comfort foods, big portions, real dairy shakes and malts! Come on out and support local businesses!!

Stopped in on a road trip, they had something for everyone in the family so the whole family loved it. You can tell the food is made there in house like it ought to be. The burgers and fries were really good. All the food was hot and fresh. The fountain drinks were good (not like some places where it's all really watered down). If I wasn't so full I would have really liked to try the ice cream situation. Lots of people were coming in ordering it with all kinds of tasty sounding toppings and mix-ins. You can tell this is where all the locals come, it was fairly busy for being a small town. We're definitely adding this to our list of places we like to stop on road trips. And the service was good too!

SO yummy! First off, highly recommend the fried pickles and fried cheese balls (that they bread in house) with their house made ranch! Got the country fried steak with homemade gravy, also amazing. Topped it off with yummy ice cream. Super awesome customer service! Worth the stop into town on a road trip!

I heard about this place from a third party, specifically their ice cream. I took the drive this last Sunday. It took 28 minutes from the "East Side" of Des Moines. (I like the back roads so I took the back way past Mitchellville. It was a bit of a drive but not too bad for a nice casual Sunday. I arrived to find a nice little shop. The young lady who was doing the serving promptly told me I could sit where I liked. I ordered coffee and water. I asked the friendly wait person what was good. Without hesitation she replied "Everything." I went with Southern Omelet add hash browns (Extra $1.50) and a two piece of French toast. My food came out and it was good. The French toast however was pretty cooled off. (It wouldn't even melt butter.) It tasted good but it was pretty cold. The rest of the food was pretty good. The omelet was done perfectly. The service was solid and friendly. Now for some dessert. The Soft Serve Ice Cream that according to my buddy was worth half an hour drive to get. I ordered a small strawberry sundae as I was pretty full from breakfast. First, the size was HUGE for a small. Probably the equivalent of 5-6 scoops of soft serve. Second, the strawberry sauce had actual BIG chunks of strawberry in it. And lastly, but not least, the soft serve was perfect. Smooth, creamy, vanilla goodness. In closing, the food was okay but the ice cream made this an above average venture. And I was glad I made the trip and can highly recommend you swing in if you are in the neighborhood. Just make sure you save some space for the soft serve dessert.

Several girlfriends and I met for a birthday celebration breakfast. Service and food was top notch! We were seated (12) at tables pushed together and also used a booth nearby. Our server kept our water glasses and coffee cups full! Everyone enjoyed their breakfast! Bought some gift certificates too. Very nice, will return again!

Cratty Shack has great food and reasonably priced. Restaurant personnel are always friendly. If you're looking for a place to go out to eat, I highly recommend you drive to Colfax and enjoy the Cratty Shack.

Breakfast is always great, great eggs, hash browns, pancakes, B&G, bacon, all is fantastic! Better than any corporate place. Definitely worth it! I did have a burger that was to dry, and the appetizers need less breading or different breading, bc they were not good! Ice cream is always amazing. Their breaded tenderloin, way worth it. Good Philly cheese steak, them seasoned twisty fries are great! Can't wait to try more!!! All in all, great food, service, and worth the stop people, keep it local. Keep up the good work. I sure do appreciate a good place for food in a small town<3
