Thought the pricing was funny. Didnt realize i was getting extra than what i paid for: spiderwebs, spider eggs, and the spiders themselves. So many spiders in my pets food. Thats all i came for, had to struggle to stand w my cane the 15 minutes it came for an employee to ring me out for my one item. And the cashier wanted to prioritize a customer with the alliant logo ahead of me after they arrived after me. It says something that the alliant energy employee was more compassionate than this employee, as they ushered my crippled rear infront of them much to the cashiers dismay.

This is a wonderful pet store. Huge and full of all types of critters. This is the only pet store I use. Friendly, knowledgeable, and great selection. I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else, EVER.

The place was really clean, and all of the animals seemed well cared for. We get our crickets and superworms from here.There is a wide variety of pets for decent prices (various lizards, snakes, fish, mice, rats, ferrets, etc.).The employees are also very friendly and helpful!

It was my first time here, and I drove an hour and a half to see it after a friend mentioned that it was his favorite pet store.It was very clean, animals look well cared for, and there's a HUGE selection of fish and aquarium supplies which was our main reason for coming! The tanks are all clean and filled with happy healthy fishes! I was able to find several fish I had been looking for for a long time, and my boyfriend and I left with so much new stuff. All of the fish we bought did well on the trip back home and are thriving a week later.The employees were all so friendly and very helpful. It's such a nice change talking to other fish keepers as opposed to the petco/petsmart employees that are so misinformed and selling sick fish.Our doggos even had a blast seeing all the new sights and smelling all the smells. Our newest pup is very old and very timid but he was dragging me through the store! He was so excited and it was so nice seeing him with that energy! Also a plus, there was the sweetest lil pibble girl behind the counter that kept coming out to see our boys.Be careful letting your SO walk off to look at things without you; you'll lose them and spend a good 10 minutes doing laps around the store through the aquarium section trying to find them again! 😂I absolutely loved it here, it was 100% worth the drive, and we'll definitely be back very soon!

Unfortunately I am changing from recommending them, to not recommending. Due to Betta fish neglect.I went in to get a betta. Found an Alien Betta priced at $45... there was trash (sticker?), clumps of hair and fur in his vase and in his water. It looked like someone swept the floor and dumped the dust bin in his vase. He had no color and barely showed any signs of life.I am disappointed the new owners haven't done anything with their betta section to improve it. Just cups or vases on a cold shelf, like all big brand pet stores. Also disappointed they sell tiny tanks advertised for bettas, that are not suitable for any living creature to be in.

I was so excited to find that this place carried the raw frozen cat food I’ve been getting my kitty for years which was recently discontinued from Theisen’s. I spent days trying to figure out where I could get this food from locally and this was the only place that carried it! In total, I purchased this food 3 times. I also want to mention that each time the same woman saw me purchasing it, she exclaimed that I must be the person who called looking for it, which leads me to believe I am one of the only people who buys it.The first time, I purchased it without incident, everything was priced as advertised on the freezer doors it is shelved in: $19.50. That was extra exciting, because the cheapest bags of this food at Theisen’s were $23.The second time I went, the man who rang me up said he couldn’t sell it to me at that price because they would “literally lose money on it” and that he didn’t know how it got to be priced like that. I told him it was marked at $19.50 on the freezer and I could run back and take a picture of it if he didn’t believe me. He walked back with me instead and saw it for himself. He still said he couldn’t charge me that and would need to charge me $30 instead. I was extremely frustrated and defeated. My cat is a picky eater and this was the only source available for the food he will eat. I had no choice but to pay the $30.The next time I went in, the price stickers were scratched off of the freezer door and I was charged $36 at the register. Now I understood why he didn’t want me taking a picture of the prices last time. I was floored. They really doubled this product in price from my first purchase?Needless to say, now they’ve lost one of the only customers who was probably buying that food. They are completely within their rights to adjust the price, but it was extremely unprofessional and rude that they charged me more than what was advertised on my second visit, despite seeing with their own eyes what it was marked at and it ringing up that way in the system. As a business owner, if they had eaten that expense, apologized, and warned me that it would be higher in price next time, they probably would’ve had me as a customer for life. But the fact that they adjusted the price right then and there instead of honoring what was already in place in their system was a huge ick, and to find the way they scratched them out when I returned without even adding a new price sticker so I had to find out at the checkout, was even worse. Extremely disrespectful and I hope they enjoyed the $85.50 they got from me because I’ll never give them a penny more. I understand it’s under new ownership but that was THEIR responsibility to take inventory of the prices when they took over.Luckily I found a much better local store that specializes in healthy pet foods, the owner is extremely knowledgeable and I’m getting better raw food that my cat loves for only $13. Do better, Pet’s Playhouse.

Love this store always best prices an there pets are always well taken care of my mom bought a fish from pet co it look like it was dien when we got it so it died withen a day so i told her to come here an she noticed the fish look way healther an they educated her on how to care for it the easy simple ways to prepare its home an all great peopleUpdate: did I say I love this place the fish tank was getting dirty more then normal so I came and instead of just buying something they educated me in how it would help and the difference option they have and how to set up there's no better customer service then here and I lived in Vegas for 10years where the first week of training is hospitality you guys are great blessing thanks again

Place has seemed to decline since new ownership. Almost every tank was extremely dirty and had dead fish in about every other tank. Water all over the floor in multiple areas. Honestly disappointed

I went here for the first time this afternoon and it is hands down the cleanest, nicely run pet stores that I have ever been in. It's clear that they care about the animals that they sell and are also very knowledgeable about the pets and how to care for them. I'm a new fan, and I'll definitely be back!

Takes looked great but very disappointed in the way their store bird looked. Not sure if he's recently rescued or been there but either way he looks awful. Missing toes, beak is crossed and way over grown, and very messed up nails(wat was left of them). Worst of all I was there for 45min and not a single employee even said a word to me.

I have been going to Pet's Playhouse for many years to check out the animals. On my latest trip they had two chinchillas, which I have never seen there before. The female had a problem with one of her eyes, it didn't seem to want to open. She was very friendly though. I will have to go back soon to see how she's doing.

The staff is always friendly every time. Doesn't matter if we are in getting supplies or just taking some time to enjoy seeing the animals. We usually like checking out the ferrets! A great selection of supplies and pets. It's nice to have a local pet store still around. Keep up the awesome work guys.

Disgusting place. They have a bird that is obviously not cared for. The beak is over grown to the point where the bird keeps rubbing it against the cage and can’t close its mouth. The nails are messed too.

It's great to see rows of tanks of fish. It's not so great to have employees ignore you standing there wanting to buy them for 30 minutes, or walk past you to help other customers first. During multiple trips here, when we had questions on what types of fish do well together and conditions they like literally we were told to look on Google. Kind of done with the excuse owners and employees are "new." Cleanliness, personal hygiene/appearance, manners and knowledge do matter. Maybe they are the ones who should be studying Google instead of telling customers to go on there to have their questions answered? PetSmart and Petco are closer, cleaner and offer far more knowledge and help.

Went in to check out how the new owner was running things and was very disappointed. They had a pacman frog on very dry woodchips and it was so dry it had basically formed a mucus shell to stay from drying out. I honestly thought it was dead and broke the rules to see if it was. I checked on it and it was barely alive it seemed. No wonder with such low humidity and 0 water in its bowl along with almost every other reptile enclosure. The only one with water was the turtles who are in the smallest tank with the dirtiest water I've seen in a turtle tank. I told the very rude and very large worker that the frog had no water and was basically dying but was still alive and that I checked. She very rudely told me do not touch our animals. Oh I'm sorry I touched an animal that you're abusing because of your total lack of knowledge and ability to think of what an animals needs on a basic level. This store will hire anyone it seems, was really hoping it was going to change for the better with the new owner but I think it honestly may be worse now.

This pet shop is incredible. Its a very well maintained pet store. All the animals are treated fairly and well fed. The owners are very diligent. Owners were talkative and well informed about each animal. Truly incredible place. So glad I could support a local business as great as this one. Will not he returning to corporate pet stores.

The new owners are running this place into the ground. It’s disgusting in there, and the employees aren’t kind. There’s birds that “escape” and fly everywhere, and can get outside and fly away. The place smells so bad and all the cages of the animals are disgusting. They have a “store” bird who is so mistreated. They feed it Cheetos and taco bell and it’s feathers are completely rigid and beat up. This place doesn’t know how to treat animals let alone people and I won’t be coming back. Sad that this store used to be great but is going down the toliet.

Update:1/5The new owners seem to be struggling, I won't be going back. There are dead fish everywhere. I mentioned to one of the employees that a tank has obvious signs of ick and they just shrugged. I went in there to get some snails and the employee told me the reason for all the empty shells was because the snails like to crawl out of their shells and hide in the gravel. Apparently snails can swap shells too. I am not sure if the employee was confusing snails with hermit crabs?4/5This place is really great if you want some fish. They have tons and tons of fish. They do also sell reptiles, rodents and birds but that isn't their focus. I will give them props for selling rats which the big box stores don't carry. They staff are super attentive and will help you pick out and decide on the fish you need.

Horrible New Owners! I've been shopping here for 15+ years and had never had a bad experience until yesterday. 1st of all the young man behind the counter acted like he didn't even want to ring me up. Then he took forever ringing up 2 fish 8.99 a piece for chiclids , 4 dozen feeder shrimp and 1 hanging tent 15.99 for the chinchilla, costing a total of $57.00 then he didn't want to give me a plastic bag. Then to top it all off as I was juggling my items I forgot my debit card on the counter and 45 seconds after I walked out it disappeared. The guy from behind the counter hadn't moved so where did my card go ? He wasn't helpful at all and basically said nothing when asked about it. I believe he is thief but can not prove it. With all the other options for buying the products I need I'll now be shopping elsewhere. So sad to see this long time small business being run like this. Shoppers beware!!!

Absolutely the best place to buy tropical fish! Wide selection and reasonable prices. They have a wide variety of small animals and accessories for dogs and cats too. The owner has a wealth of knowledge and staff is super friendly. This small business is amazing and worth the drive to the Southwest side of Cedar Rapids.
