We are so happy with our experience with the Des Moines County Animal Shelter! After looking at the pets, we were interested in this sweet girl and they let us play in the room with her for as long as we wanted. It was so nice to be able to have that time alone to see how she would do with us. We decided to adopt and they handled the process great and were so sweet! We had time between the vet appointment and when we adopted her and they allowed us to come back any and every day between to see our girl! She found a toy that she loved and when asking where they got it, so I could purchase one myself for our dog, they let us keep the toy! They were even gracious enough to let us keep her collar and harness that fit her so well. We love our girl and so happy to give her a forever home thanks to Des Moines County Animal Shelter!

Very disappointed with this place. We gave $600 total to adopt a dog that's after the vet bill. They were suppose to bathe the dog before he came home and that didn't happen. They had 5 days between the time he was going to the vet and coming home. Everytime I've personally been inside this place nobody is doing anything. The least they could do is bathe the animals before homing them. Just a heads up anybody that wants to adopt animals from this place it's 130 to 150 for the humane society and then you pay the vet for nurturing and spaying plus shots. Just remember they will come home smelling terrible and on top of that you can't bathe them for a week cause the surgery they have at the vet! Real good system there. It's not professional at all I mean who wants an animal in their house that's been in a pen with pee and poop for weeks? Something to think about we asked you guys to bathe the dog on Sunday and it went to the vet on Thurs day it never was bathed for sure. How ever the dog didnt work out cause it was wild as heck once it got to the house. Kept it 3 days and couldn't get any money back

We have had nothing but wonderful experiences with this humane society! We appreciate all you do. The 4 times we have adopted from here we have been very pleased. They have gone above and beyond for our 4 legged family members! It’s a very clean shelter and the animals are well cared for!

I went there to get 1 cat..but came home with 2. While driving to go get Rooster, i was talking to Tiffanie on the phone and was told the story behind Rooster and his mom. I brought them both home with me. Top notch service and highly recommend these people

Took a very sick, runny nose, drooling, couldn't eat, skinny as a rail, but very friendly, male cat to the shelter. Animal control came and took him into the shelter, she was very kind, helpful.

Got a husky from in 2010 had Jake for 14 years we lost him this last May we love him so much. He actually pick me when I went in. I miss him so much time to share with another fur baby. The staff were friendly, professional and actually let me Know Jake was trying to get my attention. He starting crying when he first saw me. They said he had never done that before I had to take him home.

It has been years since we adopted from here but I still go in periodically to browse the kitties 😸. Friendly staff, hard working, clean atmosphere. It can't be an easy job but they definitely do it with the animals best interest in mind and that's how it should be! Kudos!

I have not adopted from this humane society but have visited the dogs and cats. I have donated to this organization numerous times. I would not donate if I felt there was anything wrong here. It is always clean, cheerful and staff is always professional and courteous.

We have gotten all of our dogs here. They seems to genuinely want the best for the animals in their care. The animals seem well treated and loved. They are a great idea for your volunteer hours or donations.

I was scrolling through pet finder on this location, and saw all the lovely little babies. My heart swells at the thought of them not getting lovins before they go (if they don't get adopted). I'm 19, and I came in today to give lovins and walk the dogs and such. I saw a lovely little weiner dog on the site that said she was sweet and such. I went to the shelter with the intentions of taking her for a walk/laying in the grass/ giving her all my love. I cannot adopt a pet right now, but I love them so much. When I walked in, today, 3/21/19 at 3:30pm, the front desk person was blonde and helping another person. I was waiting patiently. The lady, as if realizing I was just there, asked if she could help me with something as if I was there to cause mischief. I told her about the dog I had seen online, to which she immediately replied was timid and scared and had too many applications in for her adoption and such. I was caught off guard, as I did not see on the internet posting of the dog that she was timid. It said she was very sweet. However, I understand rules and asked if I could spend some time with another dog. She said I could only look as "We are not a petting zoo." I am fully aware it's not a petting zoo. It's a kill shelter. I wanted to give my love to an animal, of my free will and time. I had no ill intentions. She did mention there was a volunteering course I could take and then walk the dogs, but she said it as if EVERYONE should know that. I cried on my way home because I couldn't pet a dog. I've been missing having a pet, and I wanted the bond and fur under my hand. I guess not today.

They seem to be clean and are not overcrowded. They were expanded and updated a couple years ago.For some reason there were a lot of empty cages on the two occasions we visited in June, 2017. Hope that means a lot of adoptions.

This place definitely deserves five stars. From my experience the facility was clean and the animals were also clean and well maintained. The staff was helpful and friendly. I will definitely be recommending this place to other people.

Waited until posted time for opening. Road plowed guys shoveled and salted walks. Woman answers door and says we won't open today. I asked why and she says too much snow. Everybody done their job to open but her. Will not go again or donate to their cause
