This store is hidden treasure. I have lived in Ames for more than 10 years and it was first time to step into the store after knowing they sponsored the climbing competition at ISU. Found two fabulous climbing shoes for my 7 years old and my 4 years old. The person who helped me was very knowledgeable and very patient. The price is very competitive. I would highly recommend this store to everyone in town. Great selection and great service!!!!!! We need to support this fabulous local store. Told my husband that I am going to buy stuff from here from now on for my outdoor and climbing needs!!!!

Great store, massive diversity in merchandise from what I expected with the size of Ames. I never write reviews but Ames JAX is worthy of 5 star! I shopped for shoes and outdoor gear. Every staff member I talked to was so helpful, and I learned best shoe sizing, brand recommendations, shoe care, and type of shoe based on my needs. I wanted to take time to think about purchasing a pair of hiking boots after trying several types on and was told they hold your pairs you tried on for up to 2 days so you don’t need to worry someone will snag your pair (even a clearance item) before you take time to think about it. I ended up coming back the next day to buy the pair I wanted.Will definitely be back and they have my full recommendation for everything outdoors.

Very wide selection of outdoor gear and clothing. Location is a bit out-of-the-way, off Lincolnway in far west Ames, nearly to the city limits. Staff is good. Parking is adequate. Pricy, but not more so than any good outdoor gear store.

Very helpful staff. Greeted by staff almost immediately after entering store. Clerks were responsive to questions I had and when I contacted them by email, I heard back very quickly. Andy and his team provided personalized customer service. On the products I was shopping for, prices were as good as online and better than the big box stores.

Local staple for outdoors and athletics. Good selection of high quality stuff, but pretty pricey. Often above msrp, which is the only reason it's not 5 stars. Would still rather take my money here than a box store any day.

Almost never walk out with what I am looking for. I try to spend my money local when possible but the small selection of fishing supplies can make that difficult. Good variety of other products for a small store but sometimes the prices make me shake my head. My wife likes the clothes and shoes and seems to find some deals on that side.

Went and got a 5th Gen G19. Easy process, staff was knowledgeable and capable of helping. The whole thing took less than 30 min. Would recommend for any outdoor needs.

They had a great selection of items and had the sheet I needed to get my cub scout items. The staff was helpful but wasn't very confident in her knowledge of the items I was looking for. She was pleasant and admitted to not knowing, even apologizing for not knowing. Great local place to pick up outdoor gear.

Been coming here for 15+ years for all my outdoor gear needs. There's always great sales and a really nice selection of clothing. There are two different buildings, one for clothing and one for camping gear. Love this place! Shop local and try JAX instead of giving huge corporations like REI your money!

Love visiting. If I was local this would be my go to hiking and camp store. Occasionally I find a deal. Clothing is higher end and will last just pricy. Check out reduced/discount area. A must stop for me.

They pretty much have everything. Also support rentals at Ada Hayden, so you can show up and take paddle boards and kayaks👍 their prices are pretty high, but high quality products. Excellent local business!

I enjoy going here for outdoor gear. Quality gear. Prices are not to bad. Worth paying the tiny bit more to support them and get the gear right away. Staff has always been helpful if you ask them a question but don't bug you if you just want to browse and see what they got. Inventory is getting low, assuming because of covid, but still worth checking out.

Always helpful. Best shoes in the area: work, casual and athletic. Worth paying a bit over online prices to support them. Also great warranty service if you have problems. They were able to locate my receipt in their own records to get the manufacturer replace a damaged/worn shoe nearly a year later.
