They were very nice and polite and knew exactly why I was having to drop my dogs out there. I'm going to volunteer after my dogs have been adopted. If the purities they pour the riverside into a plastic tub

Excellent pet adoption organization run by wonderful volunteers. Truly dedicated to finding the right qualified adaptors for their saved angels. I found a perfect cuddler that is a great playmate for my other adopted kitten!

I actually volunteer with the dogs once a week and Pet Refuge does such an amazing job taking care of their animals. The enclosures are always clean, the dogs are healthy and well fed, they foster when possible, and they go above and beyond for the safety and happiness of those dogs. I’ve also adopted a cat from them and it was a great adoption process and now I have the cutest cat ever! Here’s some pictures of the awesome dogs available for adoption! And my kitty 😻

Never been, but seen it online and a few of it's animals. They look like a nice no kill shelter.

They are all looking for loving homes so that they can be loved. God gave us love because God is love. The power, love, of a sound mind God gave us these to share with one another. They are all awesome at what they do to save an animal to give is to restore and receive.

Wanted to look for a dog to adopt, but for some insane reason I've never heard of in my entire life, you're not allowed to go back and look at the dogs. It makes absolutely zero sense. They want you to "describe the dog you are looking for". Lady, that's not how adopting an animal works. What is this? A bingo raffle? And you wonder why shelters are overcrowded. Just let people adopt the dogs no questions asked (or even look at the dogs at all for one thing) and maybe you might start moving dogs onto new homes.

Great organization. We recently adopted two kittens from them. It was refreshing to see that not only do they care about the animals they care about the homes they are going to.

Nice ladies working there, but they wouldn’t let my daughter look at dogs, they said they don’t let people look at dogs because it’s “too stressful for the dogs” like why would people not be allowed to look at dogs? How are people supposed to adopt dogs. They said “just tell us the kind of dog you are looking for and we will bring one out that sounds like what you’re looking for” huh???? Um no!!

Pet Refuge is amazing! They say they match cats to humans, and they do it amazingly. We just brought home our kitty from them, and we cannot sing their praises enough! They truly love their cats and want to best for them! So grateful for the amazing volunteers at Pet Refuge, Rachel and Angela were so helpful! Thank you!

We have dealt with this place on a few occasions in years past. But today we made a dog/cat food donation, and we were well received by a friendly and appreciative staff. This organization has always been wonderful place that takes care of it's animals. They do everything possible to give a dog or cat another chance. My family will always support Pet Refuge ❤!!!

Pet Refuge used to host adoptable pets. But they've become a weird pitbull sanctuary lately. They'll state on their FB that they have no room for stray cats or dogs, but they seem singularly determined to force ppl to adopt pitbulls, even if they have to lie by calling obvious pitbulls "lab mixes". I no longer donate to Pet Refuge of Mishawaka for this reason. I care for the well-being of actual adoptable pets, but as I said, Pet Refuge seems to be staffed by pitnutters.

Very caring and compassionate volunteer staff. They take the time to answer all your questions and help match you up with the pet that is right for you. I got my cat Chloe there last year and she is the perfect fit for my household!

When we first moved to the area my wife and I decided we wanted to start fostering dogs for a local shelter. After touring most of the local shelters we arrived at Pet Refuge. Pet Refuge is by far the most clean, friendliest, well managed facility we have ever witnessed. We have been fostering for them for a few years now and nothing has changed. If you are ever looking to adopt a dog, or give your time to help animals in need. Please, go to Pet Refuge, they deserve your support.

This establishment adopts out pets that are chronically ill, and does not give any support to the new owner. They supposedly have a vet that comes in and check the animals on a weekly visits, but that is hard to believe with how sick the adopted animal is. This place is a terrible establishment for animals.

Great experience! Was approved within 24 hours. I went to Roxanne's cattery (a huge foster they work with) and she had kittens of all ages who were very well taken care of. I was able to take my kitten home the same day with a goodie bag of food and toys, and she was up to date on all shots and spayed. Now here's the best part: cats from shelters are predisposed to upper respiratory infections, which usually begin with watery eyes. After 4 days of having my new little girl, her eye became runny and got red and swollen after a couple days even with warm compresses. Only one vet was able to get her in within a week, and the rest were booked for 2-3 weeks (apparently because of covid). I knew she was in pain, so I called Roxanne to see if she knew of anything that I could do while waiting to get into the vet. She had me bring my kitten over right away, took her temperature, gave her anti-inflammatory medication, showed me how to apply ointment to her eye, and sent me home with tubes of ointment. She wouldn't even accept money when I offered. You can count on the cattery to provide you with a great animal, and they are always there to help!

So, my family's experience with Pet Refuge comes from falling in love with Roxy. Absolutely beautiful American Bulldog. So we contact the foster and go through her barage of questions and drive 2 hours to go have an interaction with Roxy at the Nelson's Chicken benefit. We spend the better part of two hours interacting with her and decide to fill out the adoption paperwork. We knew going there we were ready to adopt Roxy. Here's where the problem starts. I've grown up around dogs and have been a pet owner for a long time. My last Dog whom my ex wife and I had to put down 6 years ago due to cancer wasn't always up on her rabies shot due to us going thru job losses home foreclosure and bankruptcy. She was a boxer and lived a fully active, 11 year, healthy life going through all of that with us, as all of our references can attest to. Now 6 years after her death myself and my new wife are in a better place mentally, financially, and able to provide a loving home for any animal we bring in. Pet Refuge, even when you are honest with them will hold any little thing they can against you and attribute it to "putting the animal first" the problem is, the past is the past, people better themselves. You're not putting the animal first when you essentially push people like us into purchasing the type of dog we want from a breeder because of your over strict way of thinking. Loosen your reins a bit when good families such as ours come along. Those animals deserve good homes and we were more than ready and capable of providing, no matter what you think. They even know that my sister volunteers for PAWS of Adam's County. This is why I have a dislike for some rescues, they're hearts are in the right place but it overrides rational thought when it co.es down to the best fit for a family and potential pet. I hope that beautiful girl finds a good home since ours was passed up.

Pet Refuge is an amazing no-kill rescue that genuinely cares about the animals taken in. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and the adoption process is very thorough. Every effort is taken to ensure that people wanting to adopt are ready and get matched with just the right companion. My wife and I adopted our now 15 week old Phoebe (formerly Chloe) about a month and half ago. The entire process start to finish took about a week and a half. We filled out an application online and interviewed that weekend. The staff worked with our schedule to make the interview possible and let us meet with several of the puppies in the litter to get to know them a little. The facilities themselves were clean and well-maintained. The animals weren't crowded, and we were able to play with one puppy from the litter at a time in a small, private room. We were interviewed by two staff members while we played with the puppies. We were called the following Thursday saying we had been selected to adopt our Phoebe. Pet Refuge even facilitated a time for Phoebe to meet our older dog that Saturday when I came to pick her up.On top of the terrific service and thorough process, the value of adopting a pet from Pet Refuge is tremendous. The adoption fee for our Phoebe was $200--this included her first three rounds of shots, spaying, microchipping, a voucher for her rabies immunization (to use when she was old enough), and a goodie bag with some food, toys, coupons, etc. Overall we were very impressed from start to finish!

Awesome experience meeting and adopting Camo and Bear today. The staff was so friendly and gave us so much information. We could tell they loved them like they were their own and had so many stories to tell. Thank you.

We were a young couple adopting our first dog. We felt very nervous about the experience of taking in a pet, but Pet Refuge matched us with a fantastic dog, Max. They were very responsive to us, answering our many questions and giving us the time we needed to make this decision. We are so happy we did and recommend Pet Refuge to all of our friends.

I just called them and they were extremely rude. All I ask the guy on the phone if they could help me place a cat and they told me that they can't accept any animals unless they are from other shelters. Which I completely understood that. The fact is that I asked for help placing her in a Forever Home. I never asked them to take her in the shelter. I am willing to keep her until they are able to find a home for her. Like a foster does. Which I mentioned to him. He flew off the handle and told me that "yes they have fosters, but that they were full with their cats". He totally misunderstood me. When I told him that I now understand why they had so many bad reviews online he starts to yell at me about them being bad because of him not helping me with my kitten. LMAO on that one. How am I to blame for his bad attitude? I didn't deserve to be treated like that and no one else should be treated like this ever. This man shouldn't be working there period! He does not care about the animals otherwise he would treat their prospective family members better!

In reading the negative reviews, for some reason it won't let me respond directly. Firstly, let me start by saying I'm sorry if you felt you were treated unfairly or unkind. I have been a volunteer there for over 3 years and I think I can speak for all of the volunteers when I say we try to always put the animals first since they don't have a voice for themselves. We are ALL volunteers, even the surly gentleman who took your call. Not an excuse, but we do what we can to help our fur babies. Are we understaffed? Yes... so instead of complaining, volunteer. Our we over capacity? Not yet, but that's why we have fosters to help. Again, let me emphasize, we are ALL volunteers from the folks who attend adoption events to the people who scoop poo. If an anonymous claim was made, we have to take it seriously. If you want help placing a cat, SB TRIB does free ads. Before you condemn an entire organization please look at the big picture!

My family amd i just moved to Indiana. We went here to adopt some kitties that were being fostered. We were asked the silliest questions. Did we have a vet for the kitties? No we just moved here. Instead of suggesting a good vet the people that worked here looked at us disdainfully and judged. They asked what food we would feed the kittie...again we didn't know because we weren't about to buy all the stuff without knowing if we were accepted for the adoption...again a disdainful look. The application itself was a joke. We had a cat previously in michigan that passed away. They wanted our pets vet info and wanted to speak to him. They wanted to know how much we were going to spend on pet food and pet bills. They were highly judgemental. We went to the humane society and adopted two lovely little girl kitties that are happy, healthy and spoiled. They even suggested a vet to us!! Plus the cost of adoption was a lot cheaper. Pet refuge wanted 100 for each kitten. We were willing to pay it but humane society only wanted 75.00 for both girls. Three weeks later pet rufge called me and told me were denied adoption. I was so happy to tell them we had already adopted from humane society the woman from pet refuge hung up on me. This place is full of horrible judmental women. I do not suggest going there at all.

I didn't even want to give it one star! I just got off the phone with some woman with the adoption process. I submitted an application for my Dad. She wanted to know why he couldn't do it himself. (He is 76 years old and doesn't own a computer. Believe it or not there was a time when people did not rely on the internet to communicate!) My dad is older and lonely and thought that by adopting an older cat he could help both himself and the cat. Well apparently that is not the case. This woman was borderline rude. Telling me ALL of the expenses involved with owning a cat. (which is true but come on woman!) She even called the apartment where he lives to tell me what the fee would be! Yes we knew they allowed pets. Yes all apartments that allow pets charge a deposit and additional rent. But he hasn't had a pet yet so we had not paid in advance. (which is required by the pet refuge. Pay in advance) good to know we would have NEVER figured that out! How long since he owned a pet? I really didn't know. We had pets when I was a child but I didn't know the exact date of the last pet he had. It was very clear that she DID NOT want my dad to take this cat. When or if the cat were to get sick, he would be very well cared for. If my dad couldn't afford it we would help him as we always have. We would not have submitted an application just for kicks. I do realize that they need to be careful now a days with placing animals but to be so rude is really uncalled for. We have had animals all of my life and have loved everyone of them and yes they do get expensive at times but we have managed. We thought by adopting an older cat we would be giving him another chance at life, but apparently it is a requirement to be incredibly rich to own a pet! My poor dogs! It is a good thing they can't do math, so they don't know that I am too poor to own them! (My big dog just had an ear infection that cost me a pretty penny but guess what, I paid it and he is a happy guy now. But no I had not planned for it in advance. My bad!) No wonder they have over 400 cats in their facility waiting to be adopted! The poor little things will never get a home with this woman in charge of the adoption process!

Alot of fur babies, but sad as much. Went to see a dog, and she was scared to death. How people can treat them is beyond me. Would love to spend just 5 minutes in a locked, sound proof room with these scums.
