I’ve adopted from multiple shelters around the east central Indiana area. However this one blew me away. I know funding is different/difficult for most shelters; however let me list why this shelter is so great. My puppy came micro chipped already, spayed, only needing his last vaccinations, a coupon bag with toys & doggie tooth brush. The facility was extremely clean, the adoption process was straightforward, & I was able to take my pick of the litter home that day. They also gave me a free consultation in my pet adoption folder for puppy training classes; which I will be using. I love how easy this process was & I’m thankful for all the work they do for Henry county. I drove from Delaware county for my puppy & I’m so glad I did!

I am appalled and disheartened with this “shelter”. The three employees sitting behind the desk couldn’t have been more unfriendly, unhelpful and quite frankly lazy. I came along a small pup walking along SR40 in Knightstown across from Speedway, I called the Knightstown police station, they advised me to take the dog to the Henry County shelter since the dog was found in Henry Co. When I showed up with the dog, I had to basically pull teeth to get them to spend about 2 seconds to scan the dog for a microchip. As the guy was scanning her, he literally said “she’s a cute one, at least she isn’t a pit.” My mouth dropped and I’m not even a pit lover. First of all, the unprofessionalism. Secondly, keep your opinions to yourself, as a shelter employee I am disgusted with your lack of empathy and snide comments. After getting the microchip info they handed it to me on a post it note and it was clearly no longer their concern. They told me they couldn’t take the dog because it was found in Knightstown, I told them what the cops said. They told me to take the dog back to the location I found her and have the cops pick her up and call them, and THEN they would take the dog, they said they don’t have a good relationship with Knightstown and it needed to come directly from the police department. The relationship between the two cities have absolutely nothing to do with me or the homeless, figure it out and do your job. I’ve never known a shelter to refuse a dog much less one found in their own county. Needless to say I will not be donating to this county shelter. Update: drove the dog to rush county. They were closed doing an event at the property and still took the dog in- no questions. They even took my info to update me if she found her owners. This is how a dog shelter should function. I will forever donate to them and appreciate their kindness. I’ll attach pics, if anyone is missing their baby girl, she’s at rush co shelter bc Henry co is worthless.

I did my first adoption June 28th 2023 and bought Bobo home. All the staff were very kind in making sure the meet and greet went ok with my current pet Titan. Bobo was cleared of everything and received all his vaccines, tags and a chip. It was a easy process to go through and I'm happy to have brought my 10 month pup home.

I’ve had issues with them for a couple years and have voiced my opinion over and over again. This last time I paid for my dogs city licenses (one I didn’t have the rabies certificate for yet but still paid $40) and then a couple months later they send me a fine in the mail for another $50 (which they never sent me the $40 back) and I emailed them stating I will not pay another $50 and sent them the rabies certificate and THEN they said I don’t need to. They NEVER refunded me but sent me a fine. I will NEVER support this so called shelter. It’s a horrible excuse for one. They won’t take any animals in but expect people to still help fund it and support it. Oh and they have me blocked from their Facebook page

Took my children here to look for a cat and to just see the dogs which when we walked in the people behind the desk acted as if we were ruining their day by being there. As we walked through the door to see the cats the smell almost knocked us out. Then once getting to the cats room it was very depressing to see these cats up to 5 in a cage just stuffed in. My children of course were enjoying the cats and one of the workers walked in with a cat and I’m assuming she was trying to put the cat in the cage in front of my son well instead of saying excuse me (because he did not see her because he was busy petting a cat) she started to yell that he needed to move and watch out for her because she’s trying to get to that cage which instantly made me mad. But me being my polite self told my son to please move and he said sorry immediately and stated he did not see her. Which she continued to say things under her breath and huff and puff every time my children were anywhere near where she was walking. Then while we were looking at a cat and getting its information I told my children we would go see the dogs and a lady who worked there had walked in as I was saying this and her reply “WE ARE CLOSING AND YOU NEED TO LEAVE NOW!” Then proceeded to slam the door as she walked out. So as we are leaving I started to apologize and stated I thought they closed at 5 she states obviously we don’t we close at 4 and it’s time for you to go and this was at 3:58. But I apologized and asked the other lady how do I apply to adopt a cat it’s in door 8 the lady who previously yelled at us said there’s a paper on the table you can leave and fill it out then bring it back at a time we are open. Like are you kidding me. I was so disappointed in the way we were treated and also the way the animals were kept. They obviously don’t clean the cages properly they had a sick kitten in with multiple other kittens and I mean this kitten had diarrhea everywhere all over it’s fur and pus pooring out of its eyes and just looked pitiful. I will say I’m glad we were unable to see the dogs because just walking past the double doors you could smell the overpowering smell of poop. I just don’t understand after receiving over a million dollars in funding for the cats how they are still being put in these small cages and how it can smell so bad. My children and I will be going to ARF from now on they are always great and polite and I will not be going back to new castles humane society. I will say I pity the animals because they are the ones suffering for these peoples actions.I will say the one good thing from the experience was a volunteer who was extremely nice to us and was in the room when the worker yelled multiple times at me and my children and she looked so sad like she had been beaten down by the workers and bullied. She is the only reason they received a star at all because if not for her they would have got nothing

Very friendly but the vet tech didn't act like she knew what she was doing if not for my girlfriend's ability to react quickly someone could have been bit by one of my dogs and then she hurt my older dogs hip while administering his booster shot she just jabbed it at him without holding on to him or taking a precise angle

I recently adopted at cat from them in January and they took forever to let me adopt him and was trying to wait until it went back to $75 for adoption when it was $25 but I finally got him when it was still $25 and the day I adopted him he was sick and I called them the next day when they opened and told them and that he’s sick and what’s going on with him mind you I have only had him not even 24 they said you need call his vet so I did the vet was mad because they had to squeeze me in because when I say hes sick I mean bad sick and so I took him to the vet and it cost me $83 they gave me 3 different medication and now he’s finished with those and is still sick he is now bleeding out of his nose and crying around the house because he is in pain and can’t breathe out of his nose and his urine smells really bad so now I have to take him to the vet again and spend more money because the same sickness he got from the animal shelter and they still won’t do anything about it they said oh we could replace him why would I get a cat that I really want and then have to replace him with a whole new cat makes no sense I would understand if he was a mean cat and you wanted to replace it but not a sick one

Very sweet, genuine, people working. Clean environment. Felt horrible about taking stray cats there, but had no where for them myself. Their employees helped them and me without being inconsiderate to all of us. Over all, a good experience!

Charges you 100.00 / per kitten ,to take stray kittens you find, so it makes you want to not help.

The director of this business wants to not only allow invasive cats to roam around and destroy our native wildlife(or succumb to the dangers of outdoors. ie: coyotes, cars, dogs.) , but also wants them to continue to be allowed to roam freely with an eye nearly popped out and leaking fluid. Then has the gall to call the trapper who called the cat in inhumane. With that level of ignorance, she shouldn’t be in charge of a group who is supposed to put animals at the forefront. Her ignorance will only tumble down the line and fuel the never ending cycle of uneducated at the head of this “humane” society.

My cat has been missing for months and I came across a cat at this shelter that could possibly be him. All I needed to know was the cats intake date as I moved to Chicago and it would not make sense for me to make that drive if this cat was taken in prior to a certain date. Lisa was extremely rude, which is fine I can play that game all day. I just worry she is having that nasty energy around this helpless animals, truly praying for them. Not a surprise other reviews are about staff attitudes!

I always enjoy the Henry Co Humane Society staff! They are caring and honest. They are quick and respond to my questions.I have gotten 3 dogs from them over the years... every one was the BEST dog! We had them for a long time and they lived long happy lives. You can tell the staff pays attention to the animals and socializes them well.I'm currently trying to finalize adoption of Hex... my next baby girl.

If I could give this place zero stars, I ABSOLUTELY WOULD. Lady at the front desk, was rude, and disrespectful. Adopted our dog of 6 years to someone else after my daughters and I filled out all necessary paperwork, & were told we’d get him back as soon as he got neutered. Required my i.d which I misplaced and communicated clearly with them that we be down for him as soon as my i.d came in the mail. 2 days after he was neutered, we went to finally get our boy back and was told they had already adopted him out to someone else. So my 7, 4, & 2 year old all left crying because they’d never see the only pet they’ve ever known/loved again. She had absolutely no sympathy, or respect. Whoever is in charge should really consider making some adjustments with the staff. How many more PAYING customers are you willing to loose over a disrespectful, unprofessional “receptionist”..

I go here out of necessity. The way their adoption system works is bull and they very bad paperwork keepers. Never have a pet you register to them pass. They do not record it until you practically yell at them. Then they make it out like it is your fault. I had a dog pass on me after given to someone else. They gave me infraction in my account with them. Even though they are the ones who didn't record her passing. They tried to do the same to my dad when his dogs passed on him. I called them in and told them when it happened since he was in the hospital. He come out and they were still trying to make him license fee a passed dog. Others have had worse grievances. If I was not legally required to deal with them I would not.

Extremely unprofessional and rude, woman will blow up your phone and call you a “coward” or will email back a dog bite victim about how they’re “trying to get attention” because the bite victim doesn’t want their kids bit. They also go out of their way to put animals in bad homes, let dogs bite people, and get aggressive when it’s pointed out they’re wrong. Do not give this shelter business, let them fester as they should or get someone who actually cares about the animals to run it. Disgusting place.

This is a very nice facility. They made it very easy to view or interact with the animals. It does have a strong dog and cat odor inside, but that is always hard to control especially with the amount of animals they have on hand. This place is not real convenient to get to. But it seems to be in a good location for everyone. You can take the animals outside to interact with them which is very nice to be able to do.

The lady that answered the phone refused assistance with an animal that was sick and stayed on my friends porch one night. She tried to throw the responsibility of the dog on my friend. The dog needed immediate assistance and she refused to cooperate. She should find a new occupational as it was clear to me she had no love or compassion for animals. I’ve had all good experiences with the animal shelter other than this occasion. Hate to leave a bad review but that was completely cold hearted and ridiculous not to mention unprofessional.

Some people bad mouth this place, but I want to say that we have always, always had a positive experience. We've dropped off lost cats and been well received. When our dog died and we had to drop off her body for disposal we were treated with respectful compassion. Sometimes the personnel are a bit gruff, but they are busy. A polite response from the public is returned and probably a welcome relief from a not always polite public.

I really would like to be able to take stray animals like dogs and cats to the shelter.. also they should do free care like spaying and neutering cats.. maybe we could raise money to help them be able to do that for people

I feel awful for the animals that are in here because their without a family and home of their own. But, this place is a great place. The staff are friendly and nice. Even though I feel like their probably under staffed and don't make or get hardly any gratitude that they literally deserve.

We took our dog to get his rabies vaccine at the clinic and the ladies were great, they were very polite and great with our dog { an English Masiff}. The cost was pretty good as well... It's a great place to go and the staff is wonderful.

For being the main society. They let the dogs sleep on wooden pellets I found that very disgusting when I went there. They should at least give the poor things a dog that to sleep on and raised one. And as soon as I walked in it smelled like s*** they really need to do some upgrades about this.

unprofessional and rude. the lady that was taking our information kept huffing and puffing at my sister for not knowing/having her id or ssn (we didn’t know we needed it to surrender a cat). when handing back my id she slammed it on the counter. they need to hire more caring people!

Doesn't deserve 1 star. My wife and I were fostering a dog and found out he needed medical care that costed alot of money. We took care of him and treated him like our child. We showed him what it was like to have a good home and be treated well since he wasn't before. They said we could adopt him after we paid for the treatment to make him better. We tried to get him the help he needed and since it was so expensive we tried to get help by making a fundraiser for his best interest. We shouldnt even have to pay for it, but we fell in love with him and wanted to. Apparently some miscommunication happened and the workers at the shelter took things personally and said we couldn't continue to keep him. They were really rude and laughed at my wife and her friend when they said we couldn't keep him. They threatened her and I can't go into detail because I don't want to get my wife in trouble since she has been threatened. I'm beyond mad. My wife came to me balling her eyes out because she cared so much about him. They couldn't have cared less about how she feels or what his best interest is. It makes me so sick I can't stand it. I would avoid going here, you're more than likely going to get let down.

Very rude, and unprofessional! They randomly do as they want just like the rest of the city officials of New Castle does. Like example they are still sending me letters, and threatening fines, and such and I don’t even live in Henry County no more I have moved!!!!!!!
