We love visiting Petland in Merrillville to play with the adorable puppies, buy our dogs some cute toys and nice treats, we have considered adopting another puppy in the near future. I can't wait to figure out what exactly we are wanting. We love Petland though, the staff is always so nice!

I was playing with a BMD puppy that the employee said was a nibbler but it full on bit me and was tugging at my hand. I couldn’t get him off until my sister stepped in and grabbed him by the mouth. The employee was rude, didn’t even ask if I was fine and didn’t even offer anything to wipe/clean the wound. They just put the puppy away like nothing happened…

Nikki helped us with the purchase of our king cavalier, Benny. She was so professional and so helpful and we can’t thank her enough. If you are looking for a pet and someone to make it happen, come see Nikki!! 10/10 would recommend!

I wish I could give 0 stars. The animals all look sad and over confined. They sit on top of grates with their urine and feces underneath them and by the time you spend thousands on them they have kennel cough, behavioral issues, and parvo. The employees absolutely don’t care for animals or they wouldn’t work at this business. The employees should be fined for partaking in the Petland practices at this point. If you go in and just watch you’ll see employees throw dogs into crates and handle them with absolutely no concern. Please please go find a reputable breeder for your puppies! No place charges for sick dogs like they do. I promise you’ll also pay 1/4 of the price for a healthier happier pup. PETITION TO SHUT PETLAND DOWN NOW. Also no I don’t want to reach out to management to hear your lies. The truth is visible just by walking into this sad sad excuse of an animal store.

I bought a male Shitzu puppy a little over a month ago and he has not fit in with my familyI can return him because he has a congenital defect . The only reason I don't is because of my son. He won't potty train he just goes all over the house and he screams every time you put him in the crate. Ne:er had a dog thisbad.

Nice selection of birds and puppies, they have most of the enclosures open and allow you to interact with the animals. I’ve purchased a dachshund and a few parakeets from here.

I went in there on the 16th of November I got a brown Chihuahua that's 4 months old I love the dog and she's amazing but the lady that was checking me out and filling all my paperwork out at the end told me that her sister had a cough and was sent out they were separated I didn't think nothing of it when I got her home on the 18th I had to take her to the vet because she had a cough found out from the vet that she had kennel cough and i understand that happens with dogs I was called Petland and they said they would cover that bill and her medicine cool that's fine they called me like two days ago to ask me how she was doing it and I proceeded to say she was doing better then i ask if I had any other animals and caught this would they cover it through the vet they said yes when I called last night they said to put the dog in the bathroom and run hot hot water for the steam and they don't think they would be able to cover thatfor the vet for other dogs I think this is very crazy I just wish that they would give you more information and stuff like this and I sure didn't know you are supposed isolate your dog from any other animals for 2 weeks when you get them

For the umpteenth year in a row, petland has shown up on the Humane Society of America’s “Horrible Hundred” list. The fact that this store still works with “Dreamy Puppy LLC” (horrifying puppy mill) is appalling, and they should be ashamed for supporting such an egregious practice.

Very uncomfortable experience. I went in looking for an item and was stopped upon entering and assigned a sales person to stand next to me and hand me items. If I wanted to shop with a buddy I'd have brought one, if you can't enter without a chaperone maybe post that on the door. Everyone was nice enough, but I prefer people keep their distance. I used to like the store a lot and it was the first place I went with my brand new kitten for cat items just a few months ago. Idk if management changed or what, but I won't be back.

We bought a 10 week old female GSD from here in February and she was almost constantly on medication for one condition or another. We all fell in love with the girl despite her constant illnesses and expected her to be a part of our lives for a very long time to come. She was the sweetest and most playful girl, and sadly we lost her on 10/16/2019 to unknown causes. She was gone in an instant in the backyard and took a piece of all of us with her. If you want a healthy family member that will be with you for a long time, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere as my review and countless others seem to point toward bad breeding/bloodlines and poor care of the puppies overall.

My kids are devastated, i brought home a furr baby for my family and it died within the week of having him. It’s unfortunate that their veterinarian couldn’t catch him being sick when he supposedly was only there for a few days. Why are they not testing for parvo before selling puppies?!? And why not do a full building test when you know a puppy was recently deemed Ill???I will never come to this establishment again, you should feel ashamed of yourselves letting family’s take home sick animals.

Adopted a puppy from this location 2 weeks ago. Got her on Sunday and was told that her shots were up to date and that she was healthy. Took her to the vet the very next day and was told her shots were not up to date and I had to pay for them. This was frustrating but I didn't complain to Petland because it seemed like more trouble than it was worth. The next day, she was throwing up everything and refused to eat. I took her back to the Petland recommended vet and they simply gave her an anti nausea pill (that also was not covered by Petland, even though I was told everything at their vet would be covered). The very next day, she was even worse. Couldn't walk and could barely keep her eyes open. Took her back to the vet and she said this was very serious and apologized for only giving her an anti nausea pill and said that her blood sugar is very low and that we may not get her back. She stayed overnight at the Portage vet, and then I was told she was not doing better and the best chance she has is to be transferred over to a 24 hour pet hospital in Countryside, IL. I agreed to this, and I will say that Petland did at least cover all of these vet bills. The drive from my house to that vet was an hour long, but I went every day after work, some nights not getting home until about 11:00pm. She never got better. The vets said that they strongly suspected she had a liver shunt, which is a genetic defect that Petland should cover.I called Petland and inquired about getting my money back and was told that I had to get another puppy and could not get my money back. This is ridiculous--it was hell to see my puppy going through this and I never, ever want to go through this again. I will never adopt another animal from Petland. The last two weeks have been torturous enough, and now on top of it I am going to have to fight to get my money back.

My friend just got a puppy from here and it died from Parvo. They do not quarantine the sick puppies from the healthy and they still sell them knowing they have been exposed or sick! What a joke! Seems like they don’t like my review. They deleted it…just trying to state facts!

So normally this would be a 4 or 5 star if I was shopping... Now, for the record, I'm not sure how the sale of animals works... With that said... I set an appointment to check out a dog that Petland had... We went in and saw the dog, played with her... Then they dropped the bomb that she was over $6,000!! They offer financing, which I applied for, but like a lot of people, I was denied... The way they handled things after I was denied was appalling... First of all, the girl that dealt with us the entire time just dipped and started helping someone else, then another woman came and took the puppy back for another family... They all but kicked us out of the store... Never mind the fact that they didn't even try to help me find a different dog in my price range (about $2,000), they just couldn't get us out fast enough... I would not recommend them if you want an animal, I would do some research and go to a breeder... We will not be shopping at Petland anymore

We bought our dog 14 years ago from Petland. Were shopping at another store and decided to see the puppies. Here is our little boy and he is as smart as a 3 year old boy. Best dog we ever had.

Places like this should not be open. They buy sick puppies from puppy mills. The Board of Animal Health needs to seriously do something about this. Breeding ground for Parvo, giardia, and campylobacter. Go to the CDC website, multistate outbreaks linked to a certain store. What a joke! Something has to be done.

Depressing. The store set up is small and not inviting. The animals look sad and not well. Purchased a pomeranian puppy here 3 years ago and it was sickly. He had to stay a week in the hospital soon after purchasing. Only good was the cost for the stay was covered by Petland. My kid got sick from whatever the dog was carrying. Met another lady at the same vet whose dog was ill from Petland soon after her purchase as well. Doesn't look like anything has changed since I purchased my pet here, 3ys ago, accept that they are even more expensive.

Dogs don't have prices on them, because if you saw the price first, you would never buy one. Instead wait for you and your family to fall in love, then they drop a $5300 price tag on you. Google average is 1500-3500 for the breed I was looking at, where are there prices coming from. P.s. Local breeder was 1200.

Great people and care involved here. Same people working here for years. They provide opportunity to people that are new to pets. Without places like this you might never cross paths with your soulmate puppy or even know what kind you are looking for.To all the pet store critics: create standards of practice. Never simply ban something you disagree with. Please use your own brain to make change. Cookie cutter change is rapidly ruining everything small business in this world.
