This shelter is one of the cleanest and best designed I have ever seen. The people were busy due to the "Clear the Shelter" ,where Bissell was paying $50.00 towards each adoption. My beautiful cat Cooper was much less. I am so happy that I got him. His only bad habit is wanting to sleep on top of me, but we're working on that. He does so many cute things I can't get my housework done

TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE. Avoid this shelter!! They are not honest people. We received confirmation about acceptance of a dog. They called me specifically about some information. I asked if anyone else had applications on him. They said the other 2 applications were not good fits. They called me back to say we have been approved to pick up the dog. When would we like to schedule this. Please, bring a collar and our dog to make sure they get along. I called them back to set up a time. I called them back, and asked what the adoption fee was. That's when they informed me, that someone was currently there viewing the dog. I said why?? They said there was a lot of interest in him. They would call me back to let me know if he was adopted by them. They did call me back and said the family did take him home. I am so ANGRY!!! None of this makes sense to me. I was promised a dog that they gave to another family. SUCH AN UNFAIR SHELTER. I am in tears. All they could say was, this family lived local, where I am 1 1/2 hrs away. PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT TRUST THESE LIARSSSSSS.

The director Abby of the humane society in Columbia City is a scam artist it states on the website of Columbia City humane society that there is a 3-day holding period before they are allowed to do anything to the animals.Abby also on there website states the there is only a $35 reclaim fee and after 3 days if no one claims the animals it would be a $35 free plus $15 per day per dog. But in my case she was trying to charge me $700 for less than 24 of them haveing my 3 puppies and one adult female. So I had to leave my three puppies and now she has removed them from that facility in Columbia City to another location that she is not at Liberty to say where. My female adult dog got out again with one of her puppies and was taken to the shelter and now she is trying to charge me $285 for two dogs. on her website it states after the second reclaim fee it would be double. So today's fee that she was trying to get out of me was $285 after I already paid $200 the last time for just my adult female and had to leave my three puppies because I couldn't afford another $500 to get them. When it should have only been $35 for the puppy because she's never been taken there and then double the $35 for the second reclaim on my female so that would only have been only $105 for both. I have reported her to the better Business bureau and I have spoke to the chief of police here in Columbia City I am going to get a civil lawyer and I just want everybody to know that she is a scam artists and that she's ripping people off and is keeping loving family's from their pets she doesn't want to reunite these pets with their owners she wants money and to keep the pets from their owners. And I still don't know where the first three puppies are located and she is not allowing me to have them back after trying to charge me $700 for three puppies and an adult female which it should have only been $35 for each dog. What is Abby doing with all of this extra money that she is charging and where are the animals being kept that she's keeping from their owners because the owners can't afford to pay the outrageous prices that she is trying to charge? There are rules and regulations for every company and they are not being upheld per her website.I would like to know if there is anybody else out there that has been overcharged and their animals being taken from them by Abby at the humane society in Columbia City and if so please reach out to me because I am going to get a lawsuit against the director of The humane society in Columbia City. Abby is keeping pets from their owners and pocketing the extra cash.

Not only do I totally love this place, the staff is fantastic, the atmosphere is so calm which is fantastic for all the animals, building is always clean on top of all that I work here so I see first hand how well these animals are taken care of and loved for!! We absolutely do everything we can to make sure they all find loving furever homes and make them as comfortable as we can while they wait. I couldn't ask for a better place to work!! Thank you Humane Society of Whitley county!!!

Really not very good compared to other shelters. Called us once at the last minute to take an animal that was clearly not ready or socialized. Another time I messaged them about a ferral cat and kittens that showed up on my farm. They messaged back and said call when they opened to discuss "options". However, when I called they didn't really have options available. They couldn't offer real help. They are also under staffed. To top it off the lady was rude to me on the phone. Ft. Wayne is a much better shelter to work with. Edited to include: Also Whitley County Animal Shelter is NOT a No Kill Shelter. Do not take your animals here or get a pet here.

Never trust them. Went through the whole process to adopt a dog, got approved! Got a phone call. When can we come pick up the dog and what to bring with us. They had to leave a voicemail, upon calling them back to schedule time, they tell us there are someone there now adopting the dog. What the heck??

I am not on facebook but I wanted to tell all of you thank you so much for Buddy. I loved him so much! I adopted him on 8/3/2019. And yes I am grateful to his prior owners because they must have taught him love. Bud had a blast traveling with me in Indiana and Michigan and yes he was very spoiled! He went through much including a major surgery to help him walk as he was in so much pain. He did really well and healed. But the vet found a mass in his stomach and I lost him on 01/28/2022. I am heartbroken but thankful for the time to be with him, my best bud/traveling companion! You were all great to work with and I can't thank you enough or say enough regarding the kindness of the staff of the Humane Society of Whitley County!

Incredibly clean shelter and happy animals. Unfortunately had to surrender some cats we found on the side of our road but they were welcomed with open arms

The staff is there is wonderful. Everyone was so nice and let us take our time with the kittens to see which ones would be a good fit for our family <3

While the wrong cat was microchipped and given to us, we decided to keep her because she immediately made herself at home and it wasn’t fair to swap her out with the kitten we originally chose. However, I don’t understand the lack of accommodation to resolve this issue and the absolutely spiteful way Abby spoke to me over the phone. The kitten is extremely sick, and I feel other measures should’ve been made to get the right kitten but it was this “customer service” that made me decide it will be my first and last time adopting here.

I was searching for a kitten for my 15 year old granddaughterWe were very happy with our experience at this shelter. We ended up with 2 kittens, which pleased my granddaughter. She hasn't stopped smiling since we adopted them. Very friendly staff. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a pet.

Love going here just to see the animals. The staff is always so sweet.

For a shelter with such a rigorous adoption process, you’d think they’d take more care to the health of the pets they’re adopting out. Adopted out a heartworm positive dog without telling the owners. Adopted out FIV/FELV positive cat without telling the owners-pet had to be humanely euthanized. Beyond poor practices. Very sad.

So someone contacts you about their missing cat that got out. You take the info and say you'll let them know if it comes in. Then don't notify them when it does and adopt out their family's cat knowing full well they're doing everything to find it? Absolutely wild to me. Lowest of lows.

The outside of the building is very nice and the grounds. The inside could use a good scrubbing and paint. I loved the animals but the smell and cleanliness inside turned me off. Other shelters r running name your price adoption now. They charged me 80 bucks. That's fine, but clean more for that price. I've been in several shelters all cleaner or smell and no one helped me take the cats out. Both cats were really sick.

Put in an application for a dog, got the call I was approved during my move down to school. They told me they could only hold him a couple days, so they would have to move onto the next applicant for now but if he wasn’t home by the time I was settled in to call back. Just over a week later I call back, he’s not been adopted yet. The woman informs me I have to send over the information for my roommate’s dog’s vet, but that once I do that I can come meet him. I ask for the email to send it to, and she tells me if I email it over I can come meet the dog at noon on Thursday. I confirm this TWICE before ending the call, and send the email that very night. Thursday morning, I drive three hours to meet this dog (something I mentioned to them I would have to do), only to find out the email the woman gave me was one the woman in charge could not access. So, an appointment was made with another family for Thursday at 1:30. Even though my appointment was made and all the appropriate steps were taken, they adopted the dog out to another family. They didn’t even apologize for their disorganization- only said “Sorry it didn’t work out.” I would not recommend this place, and will in fact be warning my friends not to waste their time.

I adopted a kitten in October 2020, about a week after I got her she started having trouble balancing and walking, but snapped out of it after a few hours. She still seemed to have a little trouble over the next two weeks but I figured she might have an ear issue since that can be frequent among cats. I made a vet appointment, but over the next week while I waited she had another bad episode and could not walk at all and could barely move. I waited a couple hours to see if she would snap out of it but she did not. I took her to the emergency vet and the vet said it was clear to him that she had a neurological problem or head injury that was not disclosed to me. I took her home and weighed my options. She quickly declined and was trying to drag her limp body around until she finally stopped eating drinking or using the litter box. I find it hard to believe that after being at the shelter for 4 months the staff did not notice any issues with her since I had two incidents in the short amount of time I had her. We had her for less than a month and had to put her down; she was only 7 months old. I believe this is the result of negligence from the staff or just not wanting to disclose her medical condition to me. When I took my kitten home, they didn't even bother to give me kitten food, they gave me adult cat food, which is what I'm assuming they were feeding the kittens, which does not have the nutrition they need. Very disappointed in this shelter and the unnecessary sadness they caused myself and my children. I would give them negative stars if I could.

My husband and I decided to adopt with the Humane Society of Whitley County, from the moment we walked into the shelter , we knew that everyone there genuinely cared about the animals. The little girl we adopted is so healthy and beautiful, she will be a sweet addition to our family. Our girls absolutely love her. Thank you to everyone there for taking such wonderful care of our little Charlee, we are so Blessed to add this sweet girl to our family, she will be so loved.... ❤🐱

I was impressed with the cleanliness of the place and how proffessional and friendly the staff were. I think the animals are well cared for there and seem as happy as they can get being locked up and waiting for someone to notice them and adopt them. Next time I go in I'm gonna bring some items to donate. I think you should too!

Received good advice. My dog was having a problem and we could not afford a vet bill, they told us about a place that cost less. It worked.

The Humane Society of Whitley county is a well kept facility, with good employees and volunteers. The Humane Society does their very best to find every animal a good home. I would recommend this place for your new pet.

I came in after seeing a post on Facebook about a dog. When I got there, the service I got was very lacking. They would not let me see the dog I was looking at. The lady that I saw was also very rude to me. I felt that she was very defensive with me from the start and short. I left after filling out an application for the dog because I was very discouraged with the service. I came back a few days later because my girlfriend saw a dog she really liked. When I got there I asked for a walk through to see the dogs so I could find the one she was talking about. I was met with this remark "we do not have any new dogs since the last time you have been here". This place has an excellent facility and a rigorous application. It requires far more than most places. I heard bad things about this place and the people that worked here but I thought I would look and see for myself. Sadly to say they were right. A big thing for human society is "adopt don't shop" and I feel like it is the exact opposite for this place.
