Rating given because I’ve been to the shelter years ago and I really love it, but the website needs a LOT of work. I feel like many more pets would get adopted if there was a larger online presence. I contacted multiple courtesy listings and the listings were all old. The design of the website to show listings was also absolutely terrible.Great shelter! Just go in person instead of looking online.

I felt well informed, confident, and excited to take home my new fur baby.Thank you so much, Sky! I have been wanting a cat for a long time since I moved to Bloomington and you made it so easy!

*PLEASE READ BEFORE DROPPING OFF INJURED OR SICK STRAYS*I’ve been debating for a week on whether or not I was going to leave a review of this facility. I genuinely hope they use this review as a learning experience and a chance to change their less becoming behaviors. My sister is a college student (who uses public transit) in Bloomington and had found stray sick kittens. She had initially left them alone in hopes their mother would come for them and she did not. Eventually she gathered the three kittens and nursed them health. Fast forward to last Sunday where she had arranged a ride from my mother and I to take the kittens to the shelter as she couldn’t fit the three kittens, the food she was donating, and the extra carrier she was donating in an Uber or a bus. She needed to find them homes because she could get in trouble for helping the kittens. We walk in sit down and wait. A women comes in and tells us that they don’t do “surrenders” on Sundays and my mother apologizes and said she didn’t see that on their website and asks if there is a day we should come back and provides a brief explanation of the situation. Another person walked in behind us in an emergency situation and the individual briefly and rudely again explains they don’t take surrenders on Sundays. Everyone brushed everything off because this is clearly a rough situation. The woman comes back in and VERY RUDELY begins asking my sister questions and essentially demeaning her for helping the kittens at all. She explained several more times they don’t take surrenders on Sunday. The final straw was when my sister was finalizing the paperwork and the worker said “Just so you know for next time, we don’t take surrenders on Sundays and you are putting us in a bind by doing this.” As though my sister had done this multiple times or had the intention to do it again, or was acting maliciously by coming in on Sunday. I then proceeded to step to the counter and inform the worker AGAIN that we could take the kittens anywhere else and I’d hate to put them in a bind. She then told me I didn’t have to be rude to which I replied that I was just matching what she was giving out.I have never in my been treated so poorly for trying to do the right thing. I very much understand that particular job can be incredibly frustrating and heartbreaking but I truly believe that individual needs to take a step back and evaluate whether or not they are there to help animals or judge humans and this facility needs to ask themselves if that individual is a good reflection of their mission.

I got two of the nicest cats here. The shelter is wonderful. Staff is helpful and friendly. Will recommend them to anyone who wants to adopt. Very happy I went.

Yesterday I went and adopted a sweet cat. His name was Daniel, I renamed him Mango. The process was sooooo easy there. They made it fast and easy. They answered all of my questions and gave me directions on how to properly trim nails, give medicine, and more! The women who work here are so kind. I could tell they actually care for their animals and want them to have good homes. I’ll always recommend going here for fur babies! ❤️

I came in today to surrender a pet that we tried absolutely everything to keep. The front desk staff was rude, unkind, hurtful, and lacked compassion. These staff clearly need additional training if they’re going to be working with the public. I’m sure they see lots of irresponsible pet owners and that is trying, but to treat everyone so unkindly is not the way to go.

I love the care and love all the staff and volunteers there have. I took a cat to them when a neighbor recently passed away, and they all bent over backwards to help and assured me they would do everything possible to get the cat adopted. I adopted two kittens three years ago from the shelter. I still have them and will love them forever. They're polar opposites, and don't love on each other, but they do play together. I've taught them both to play fetch. Yes, cats can be taught, and it's so much fun. I recommend anyone wanting to adopt a pet, the shelter has cats, dogs, bunnies, guinea pigs, and I'm not sure what else comes through their doors, but they are treated very well while they're there. I also donate food, toys, and whatever they need whenever I can. I hope if you're considering adopting a pet, that you adopt from this (or any) shelter. You won't regret it!Phoebe Sue (aka Munchie) is the black and white girl, and Chloé Jean (aka Tine Tine) the tabby-calico. Both 3 years old, happy and healthy, and very well loved!

I had tried to drop off a cat that I had found. We couldn't keep in our house as the cat was aggressive with our others. The lady at the desk scanned the microchip and found it had been adopted at their shelter. She wouldn't take the cat and told me to just dump it where I had found it probably was an outside cat. I didn't want to do that because we're not that far from the highway. The cat definitely wasn't an outside cat because of the location.

My 4-ft long ball python, Ophiucus 'Oph' was taken by animal control, here. As soon as I was able, I contacted, This is ontop of trying to find a place, as well as rescue our things from the economy inn. Many things didn't make it. Including his 50 gal. More on that with my final review there... I maintained contact, kept asking what would be necessary to retrieve him. I'm puzzled as to my bf claimed Jim, I was a bit inconsolable at the time of said incident. We're still together... Why wouldn't I be able to retrieve him, it was my name on the room... ANYWAY, I needed proof he was mine. Cue FB messenger when I got him. Then I was informed of fees. Boarding and whatnot.. which I didn't have. He was already made available for adoption.I got him, thankfully. Unhappy, in cage that's too small, pool gone, good house, broken... Suggestion.. Just let a person know what's needed, either way. You all weren't really able to accommodate him properly. Why you all didn't take his cage with the heat pad and lamp and all his things... is beyond me. If you had, he'd still have it... That is all.

I had to surrender a precious puppy today that we wish we could keep. I was so emotional. I was treated so well. I was greeted with a warm smile by a very kind brunette and then Camille helped me with the paperwork. Thanks for making an extremely hard situation a little less difficult:-)I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the facility and super impressed with the kindness of the staff:-) I truly hope this sweet pup finds a forever home and is spoiled rotten!!!

I have a stray kitten. I feed feral cats at my home so it’s not unusual for someone new to show up. But…..a kitten? I have tried to surrender this little guy to the Bloomington Animal Shelter. He is not safe here. I have 6 dogs that do not like cats. The kitten has absolutely NO fear of my dogs and actually tries to “play” with them. When I took Kitten to the shelter I was told I needed to make an appointment. I was also told that Kitten would have to be spayed/neutered before I could find a home for him. All the shelter will do is post a courtesy listing. I can consider myself a “foster”. “Isn’t that Great!”. No. It’s not great.I don’t think the woman that spoke to me heard anything I said. I am afraid that I cannot keep this little guy safe. Why did the shelter get funds to make the facility better if they are not going to house animals in need? The cat room appeared nearly empty when I was trying to get help for the stray kitten.I have been unhappy with the Bloomington Animal Shelter before. I think I learned my lesson this time. I am so disappointed. The kitten is dead. I tried to pull my dogs off him but I couldn’t 😭

Awsome staff and facility. We had to regretfully recently surrender our cat for re-homing. They re-homed her to new adoptive parents in about a week. They were friendly and called me back when I left a voice mail asking about her. For an animal shelter, you can see how much the staff loves the animals. Thank you for taking such great care of our cat. We still miss her.

Got my doggo Hugh there. He has been a dream come true. Best dog, easy staff to deal with, great people there. The woman who did our adoption paperwork w me cried telling me about Hugh's background so that tells me a lot about the people working there. He was neutered, microchipped and given an animal fitness tracker called whistle before I got him and everything was done for me. I recommend going there to rescue your next fur baby. I sure love mine!

No help whatsoever when I tried to get help for 1 dog 🐕. Was told to release or should I say “abandon” the untagged animal or just take him home(which I couldn’t)! God help me or forgive me IF my heart goes cold like the rest of Bloomington,Indiana. 💔

Love and support these animal services. The facility unfortunately is full often. Doing what they can for all of these animals with the support provided for them is quite an acknowledgement. Please understand that the posted hours of operation is different then their hours for adoption. Please call to inquire on updated hours before venturing to the facility. Cats, dogs, rabbits, etc.

I will never return, and am still looking to adopt a dog. Basically, adoptions at Bloomington shelter are only allowed to people who don't work normal business hours. On a Sat. morning my wife and I visited the shelter looking for any dog that would be friendly with our very dog-friendly dog. We spent over an hour, found a nice dog, and put our name on the waiting list (3rd) for the dog. Three days later--a Tuesday-- we became 1st on the waiting list. HOWEVER, I was REQUIRED to come in the NEXT day before 3:30 or we would lose the dog. I explained that I work during the day and couldn't arrive before 4. They said sorry, you can't have the dog. Just like that. By the way, we are the perfect candidates: an acre of land, a huge house, dog-loving people, usually someone at home, and a friendly dog all waiting. The shelter has some very good protocols in place, but this one was so absurdly contrary to the interest of the caged dog and the potential adopter that it is nonsensical. They couldn't make an arrangement to let me come in at 4:00 one day that week, or wait 3 more days for me? No, there's a policy and that's that.
