There are very good trails to ride from this area. Stop and get one of Jojo's maps. Shawnee trail markers at times are confusing, if any at all. Ride the Garden of The God's Trail and pack a lunch. They are very helpful at the office. Jo's daughter goes above and beyond! Thank you. Most of the permanent campers are a pleasure to hang with and can offer good advice and fun times. There are some sites with no shade for you or your animals. We always go back at least once a year.

Great stay at High Knob. Beautiful cabins, great riding. Our host JoJo was great. Follow the rules and you’ll have no problems. No washing horses at your site, but nice wash stalls available for quarters, worth it. Covered stalls, some people did not clean up after their horses too well. We got rain and the stalls filled with water. But it’s a horse camp we were glad to have the stalls. Best riding in Shawnee.

Awesome place to see the best of Shawnee! Campground owner, JoJo helped me find the trails I wanted to see. She even took the time to draw me a map! Camp has water and electric and nice size covered stalls. Some sites have a high line and pens you can have next to your trailer. Short ride to see huge bluffs. Don’t miss riding out of camp to see: Rice hollow, tee pee, knights of the golden circle, buzzards roost, dead horse canyon, sand cave, and garden of the gods to name a few. Best riding direct out of camp. Rocky, horses need shoes all around. Best time to see everything is when the leaves are not on the trees!

Love the trails and the campground itself but the owner tends to be rude.We left early because of her yelling and cussing at us and others. We hadn't done anything, she was angry at the wrong people.Multiple issues this time, as we have camped here multiple times with issues each time.We won't be going back and at least 50 people we spoke with said the same.Double M has basically the same trails and nice folks that work there. Our next trip will be to Double M.

Went to high knob for the week, We have gone once before and loved it, the shawnee national forest is amazingly beautiful. We've heard lots of people do not like the owner (JoJo) But we all agree she is misunderstood, stating she deals with 100's of people a week (some not as smart as others) She talks very clearly, calmly, and VERY descriptive. We honestly didn't understand her much until we really listened. This woman is one of the kindest I've met, she loves her animals, campground, and campers. She got several calls and even personal visits while we were in the office and it is SO understandable why she is the way she is! She does not want to repeat herself, therefore is very clear and can seem rude but is most certainly not!! We would like people to be more open and understanding towards her! we love her, and will be coming back as often as possible. The campground is amazing, stalls, trails and all. We rode to a lot of destinations. We also had the trail dog "sissy" attend our camp, this will be the second time we have come, and she has chosen us each time :) Sissy however is older, and we love her to death! She may have gotten a few treats ;) Thank you high knob campground for an absolutely wonderful experience, environment and so on. We will always come back, 100000% recommend this camoground!

Very poor. Sat in line for an hour in 90 degree heat with the horses to check in. The owner lady was super rude! We were packed into sites like sardines and where we were at was surely a fire code violation. If you look at the picture, who ever is in that black ring could not get out in an emergency. I don't think a few others could either. The guy next to us couldn't use his awning because that's the tractor path to get pens. We had to walk through his site to get to our horses. I felt really bad for him.The trails are really good and marked well. Rocky though but we expected that at Shawnee. Lots of mosquitoes this time. Enjoyed the ride. Hated the campground. Also, I've never camped where they charge an additional fee to dump. We didn't because it's grossly uneven so you won't get even half of your waste out. I will not return.

The best place to trail ride if you would want to see something besides trails that just go threw the woods. Every turn will leave you in awe. With camp sites that have water and electric. Stalls to rent, a place to shower, and do laundry. Jo Jo will make sure you have everything you need for a great vacation.

Friendly place near High Knob, a notable feature east of nearby Garden of the Gods in Shawnee National Forest. If you are an equestrian with a rig, this place is for you as a base to explore the trails. Accommodating to ordinary campers as well as to backpackers passing through as a water point. Enjoyed a frozen treat and water fill up stop hiking to High Knob from Buzzard Point.

We had a wonderful week at High Knob Campground! The owners were outstanding at providing valuable information on trails and recommendations as to where to go and what to avoid, they even recommended an amazing restaurant 20 minutes away called Diver Down that was delicious! When we left we realized we had left a very sentimental knife that was given as a Father’s Day gift from our son behind in a stall, when I called to explain what had happened, Jo Jo did not hesitate to go and find it and get it in the mail asap! They go above and beyond for their customers and it is much appreciated! I highly recommend camping at High Knob campground

Very unprofessional management. Rude. Owners LARGE dogs running around chased horses as we left camp! Dogs came into our " hotel" and caused lots of issues. The " Hilton" was dirty and trash still left in rooms and facility. One cabin we rented had mice and spiders! Overall the facilities were very poorly maintained. The " store" was dirty and had VERY LITTLE. The owner Charged for a paper map that wasn't even close to being accurate! And charged to hose your horse off! Will not recommend!!!!

Great experience camping here at off season in mid March with just our pop up camper (no horse). We had water, electric and a quiet spot with a great view of beautiful countryside. The owner, Jo-Jo was very fair, friendly and accommodating to my family. This is predominantly a horse riders campground in beautiful back country with serious infrastructure to accommodate horses. It's beautiful & appointed w/services, but it's not the KOA type. Jo-Jo was right up front with us about the kind of campground we were rolling into so we knew where we stood. She is a salt if the earth personality: honest, straight forward, more than fair and will give you the shirt off her back. If you treat her the same & understand where you are, you too will be treated fairly & honestly in this beautiful country side.

Awesome campground, great place to ride, beautiful trails, super friendly and helpful people. You can ride all the way from High Knob to Garden of the Gods and tie your horses at GotG to go look at the view!

Had 2 campsites with a trailer and 2 tents, 8 people ranging in age from 71 down to 5 years. Had trouble with my camper running lights and Kathy took the time to check fuses with me on a 98 degree day! They were so nice to the kids, gave us directions, a tour of the campground. Everyone had a great time. We will definatley be back!

The proprietor was very nice and accommodating for the busy Labor Day weekend. The trails near the campground were well marked. The atmosphere was hospitable and jovial. I will return. Great price for the experience.

High knob is close to most riding trails. Electric and water at the site we were at. They sell ice, bedding etc. Place can get busy, so we come off season for more privacy and less people

We went on a quiet weekend and pretty much had the campground to ourselves. Then stalls are well-constructed and safe, I love the wash stalls and the camp host, Jo-Jo is second to none. Helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and caring. If you let her know how long and what kind of ride you want, she'll send you out with a detailed map and directions, and all kinds of fun history to go along with the trails and areas. Our group was out for longer then expected and she came out looking for us to make sure we were ok. I have NEVER experienced that level of care anywhere. The shower house was clean and the entire property very well maintained. Trail heads are easily accessible from the campground with absolutely amazing sights and well- maintained trails. Highly recommended.

Took our toddler here for his first camping trip and had a great time! We stayed in a cabin and it was very clean and tidy, much bigger than expected also! No idea why people say the owner was a problem; she was extremely friendly, kind, and obliging; she gave us maps, drew us maps when necessary and recommended several great local sights. All in all it was a great trip and by far the best campground we could have asked for:) can't say enough!

Many beautiful trails. JoJo is an excellent host. She is not afraid to enforce the rules for the benefit of all the campers. So, if she has crossed you wrong it was likely you were not being considerate of others. She will not tolerate speeding through the camp, abuse to animals or mistreatment of others. If you want to enjoy the riding and play nice this is definitely the place to be!

Cabins are nice. Trails are pretty well marked. There was a horse lost during our stay. The owner and campers from High Knob and Double M were fantastic and went above and beyond to help locate the horse. The day it was lost, JoJo even went out to look. Everyone seemed very compassionate and genuinely concerned. But the drama that happened to the poor horse owner when it was missing was completely uncalled for. The horse owner had help come in to search for the horse and JoJo rudely and loudly reprimanded her and told her to go home and she would be contacted if the horse was found. Then lied and told untrue information about the horse owner to anyone that would listen. JoJo is crazy. Nice campground, beautiful trails and a great location, I know JoJo is the owner, but she should not interact with customers. She is disorganized and a riude troublemaker. She did go out looking for the horse, but the owner paid for that with being subjected to verbal abuse.

JoJo herself, makes the trip not worth it, you will not be happy, so dont waste your money. I don't care if people thinks she is misunderstood, the woman has issues and a bad track record.GO ELSEWHERE! She also hates the Mule days group, she said it herself, BUT it's what makes her money. Too bad the trails are gorgeous.

We’ve always enjoyed high knob. We’ve been several times and JoJo is great! Once, we had truck trouble in the way and had to turn around and head back home. In all the chaos I forgot to call JoJo. When I did call it was late. She had every right to be, at the very least a little upset with us. On the contrary, she was very concerned and understanding. That counts! So many people wouldn’t have been. I’ll remember that and we will most definitely be back!!

I have camped at High Knob quite a few times over the past 10+ years. I absolutely love it there. The riding is fantastic with many trail head to ride out on to see something new every day. The camp owner is wonderful and does all she can to make your stay as fun as she can.

Have not personally visited the campground but my boyfriend and I had a bizarre encounter with the owner (jojo?) today. We were driving past the campground on our way to the high knob trailhead when we realized that we were being followed closely by a random car. When we got out of the car in the trailhead parking lot, this woman marched out of her car and took a picture of our license plate without saying anything. When we asked her what she was doing, she proceeded to scream at my boyfriend for driving “40 miles per hour” past her business when we were doing 25 at most. She told us that she had 5 signs posted stating that the speed limit was 10mph, but upon our return trip past the campground, we saw exactly 0 signs stating this. This is a public road past her business and I’m not sure she has the jurisdiction to make up unposted speed limits that she then enforces. Unless you are a dedicated equestrian, I would think twice about doing business with her. Completely uncalled for, confusing, and simply strange. Still unsure what she is planning on doing with our license plate photo…

We paid for a camp site all weekend but we’re never told you have to pay extra to hose horses off. 95 degrees out and we were screamed at for hosing them down after a very long ride in July where creeks were mostly dry. Very ridiculous and we won’t be back
