The Decatur/Macon County Humane Society is staffed with dedicated & loving people that really care for the animals. I adopted a beautiful snowshoe cat that had been returned and lived at the shelter for 11 months due to aggression issues, but with their care for him and the careful selection process he's found a loving home with me. Thanks, Lisa & team! :)

Considering adopting a cat. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I was able to spend time in a room with several cats roaming around.

I was able to visit my pupper during the adoption process several times, getting her familiar with me. The staff were helpful and friendly, as well.

My husband wanted to adopt a cat. I'm the cat lady and have a 13 year old cat. I said go ahead but you have to go in and pick. I can't because I will want them all. I had this idea too that I would hate going inside seeing cats scared and in cages. He talked me into going inside. I was surprised pleasantly. The cats were not in small cages and some were in large rooms. These cats all looked happy and were obviously well cared for. While we were there a black cat came in that my husband instantly liked. We filled application out and one week later we were taking our sweet boy Merle home. Wonderful staff, caring people, happy animals. I love this place. I wish they were all as wonderful as this

Couldn’t adopt anything because I’m 20 and not 21, for that reason alone I will never return here to support them because this is flat out ridiculous. I’ve worked with animals since birth, worked at a dog kennel from 16-18 years old, and currently dog/cat sit for a whole list of people. There is flat out no reason why I shouldn’t be allowed to adopt an animal, considering I’m an adult with a books worth of pet experience and knowledge. True fully sad for the animals here, because the most likely age to adopt at a shelter is young people, but due to these rules, these pets have less of a shot at finding a home.

Absolutely a Beautiful And Caring group of Caregivers for Dogs and Cats. Small facility and not open to the Public as often as it should be but it's all in due respect for the animals.

The volunteers are kind. System adopting difficult. Turned me down over no heartworm treatment later in his life even though my beautiful healthy dog lived from 8 months old in my care to over 14 years. Death had nothing to do with his heart.

A great group of people really trying very hard to help the voiceless in the community. Particularly, Autumn has been a huge resource for me and made an impact on the feral cat situation in my neighborhood and I truly appreciate her.

The process of adopting an animal is a little more intense then the shelter but that's because they really care for their animals! They sent our new dog home with a bag full of toys and food and a folder with information on caring for her. They also called a week after to make sure we were getting along OK. I loved our experience with the Humane Society and we love our new dog.

The reason I'm giving three stars is due to the way they seem to treat their animals. The animals do seem to be very well taken care of.However, the customer service and their system process is very poor. First of all, I drove almost three hours to come see a kitten. I had my heart set on a Siamese, and did not want to buy from a breeder. Trust me when I say, it is so hard to adopt a Siamese. They are in one day-- out the next.I had been emailing them since that Thursday to find out if the kitten was still available. She was. I was in Decatur adopting a kitten from MCAC and thought I could swing by to see this other kitten. (I really wanted two females) The woman answered saying I was 30 minutes too late. Which I understand. I told her I would fill out an application on Friday and come back to get the kitten on Saturday. She didn't send me the application till the next morning after I emailed. Also, I might add, after telling her I was on my way and how long of a drive I had, and would be getting money, she did not say I wouldn't be able to take the kitten home that day.I get there and I fall in love with the kitten. She's beautiful. She's licking my face! I've never had a cat do that. Then I'm told I have to be 21 to adopt. No where on their website does it say that you have to be 21 nor does it say they don't do same day adoptions.I turn 21 in 6 weeks. I understand it's to make sure you can provide for the kitten. I could've shown proof. I do very well providing for just myself in my own apartment, with my own job- that has been very stable. But they're not interested in that. They tried making it up to me saying they would hold the kitten till I was 21. Which I think they were being nice, but why would you force a kitten to stay in a cage rather than go to a loving home? I don't understand.Anyways, I'm bawling my eyes out. My references weren't even called for a week after I applied.I truly wanted to wait for this kitten, but God works in mysterious ways. I came upon a kitten that was not being taken care of at the slightest and couldn't refuse to take her in.I pray the other kittens all go to good homes, and they think about changing their adoption process.

I got my babies vaccinated last year and I'm on disability, I've been struggling over the years scrapping. borrowing, and saving for months before their shots are each and if they get sick I have savings set aside just for them. I never knew about the program for vaccines and heartworm, I cried because it is such a relief for 2 dogs. I worked for a Veterinarian for 14 years before I had to go on disability so it was a blow to my pocket book. They're awesome 👌👏 people, but We who work with animals are special!

Customer service is poor here. Seems the staff wants to tell you if you're a good fit or not. Friend was looking to adopt an animal. Still haven't heard from them 2 weeks later. The hours of operation need to be increased for better accessibility, and people want to see/touch a animal, not look at a book and fill out applications. Not very personable that way

The process to adopt is horrendous. You have to show proof that the dog that you had for 14years and love tremendously was on heartworm prevention but Frontline plus witch protects against fleas ticks and mosquitoes isn't good enough aperantly. and not to mention that if you don't actually take your pet to a vet and have records they won't even consider giving you an animal.

We found a baby kitten outside that had a broken leg. We called and they automatically took the kitten in. We've called and checked up on the kitten and he's doing great besides having to get his leg amputated.
