For visitors who need groceries/stuff, Safeway is a good start. With a good variety of brands and choices that includes some local ones, Safeway is helping bring many fruits and vegetables to a one stop shopping outing. Don't expect to see the same prices as on the mainland, but that is the case with all imported goods on the Island. Nevertheless one stop shopping is the key word here. Great staff by the way.

I love this grocery store. Especially the fresh salads at the deli. The beer is cold. Great refrigeration for all groceries. Fresh local products. Starbucks inside

Store manager don't know what he's doing. Self check out and only 4 cashier. Why do they have all the check out line when they know when they are going to be busy. Had to wait for a half hour and my icecream melted.

One of the better grocery stores on the big island but on the expensive side and I was disappointed with their almost non-existent selection of protein bars and keto options.

It’s like being in a hoarders home because they have extra stuff all over the place and the lay out is so tight you can’t pass two carts to get through an aisle while people are backed up down the aisle waiting for the checkout. Worst Safeway I have ever been in. They have room for a better layout. Someone has really poor spatial reasoning though.

Would not recommend using the delivery service if you want fresh produce - they will always give you the stuff that is 75% moldy and bad. Such a disappointment, and the last thing I needed when ordering while sick 😒 Boo Hilo managers!

Why does Safeway Hilo not put out any meats on sale on Tuesday?I know they getting ready for Wednesday but it's freaking Tuesday?I noticed it's the only Safeway that does this, is this a management issue?

Sometimes the fresh baked pies are just too good to not get one and if you have a Safeway membership you can get great deals on just about everything they also have a great variety at the deli counter in the store

I appreciate Safeway's accessibility, clean restrooms, friendly and helpful staff, and local and organic (mutually exclusive) produce! I will be excited when bulk items are available again and I can buy raw cashews there. I got a beautiful haul today for my cleanse and I'm very grateful! Mahalo for reading! 🤙

Be aware when you buy fresh salad !!!!!We always get fresh salad from Safeway , this Friday (08/05/2022)we bought one organic fresh herb salad .But on Sunday (08/07/2022)we found few leaves covered with mold , glad we found them before we were eating them . We double checked the rest of salad in the package and We found more leaves covered with mold .This is really unacceptable and dangerous , it might cause food poisoning from eating them . We really hope you can take it seriously and this is the last time .Check the photos below we took , it makes me and my family feel sick after seeing this .PS: we sent the messages to your Yelp but never get a response.So here is the review .

Overall Safeway is good. We have shopped there for many years. But today in the floral department. Where we buy flowers regularly, we had a bad experience with one of the workers. The flowers we needed were half dead but it was the only one left. We asked for a discount and she said no because the vendor will give her full credit. Regardless she should have been more customer service oriented. We bought the flower full price although half dead. We learned our lesson. Never buy flowers from Safeway again. This happened 8/22/2023 at about 5:15pm. There was three workers there that day but the one who was not friendly was the older woman.

Normally wouldn't have gone on a Friday, since they have specials every Friday...crowds can be daunting for my brain... however they had a good deal for Cross Rib Roast... Which I delightful picked up to share with our church family dinner. The cashier was such a delightful person even though I had over heard a conversation with another person saying he had already worked his shift and was staying to help out... Service at it's best!

Busy location. Help someone out, grab a cart in the parking lot on your way in. Well stocked and supplied Safeway. The store appeared clean and things were orderly as I moved about. The thing with this location is the people who work there. They are totally friendly and polite. The cashier at the end was way cool we chatted as he quickly processed my order. And just like that I was back on my way.The parking lot is busy so drive safely and aware.

After shopping here for a long time these people are the worst at customer service. Management is absolutely lost. It is amazing to me that this store as large as it is runs on auto pilot with little to no leadership.

This store has always been my go-to for all sorts of groceries & bake goods. However, only 1 check out lane was open with approx 6 people waiting and a few of them had full carts. The self check out was closed and all other registers were closed. It was very inconvenient to wait in that line to buy only a couple of items, because I needed to get to work. Hope this system can be improved, to provide a more comfortable shopping experience for those who don't have much time but need to grab some breakfast/lunch or a few household items. Thank you.

Love $5 Fridays; Specials using Safeway's App. Need to get there early though because shelves empty fast. Check the Deli section to see what there special deal is for that Friday. You may have to put your name on a list if there is a line of people. Make sure your cell is charged up for the deals they have on list to bring the price down even further. Good Luck Shopping 👍

It's hard to beat Safeways sales. The Safeway club and reward programs are as good as they get, you easily earn up to 50 cents off each gallon of fuel from the already cheapest most affordable gas on the island. Typical large open set up all Safeway stores have nice floor plans. Very friendly helpful staff. The digital coupons are big money savers.

Horrible first (and last) curbside pick up experience. I placed my order early in the morning for 5pm scheduled pickup that afternoon. Half of my order was automatically substituted, where there was no option to just issue me a refund if it was out of stock. On the app I was notified 15 minutes BEFORE 5 that they were only then pulling my order. I don't know why you choose a designated time anyway because if you choose 5pm like I did, it says it will be ready anywhere from 5 to 8pm... And it wasn't ready until after 5pm. They also took a long time to gather the order like 10 minutes and it wasn't a big order just 2 bags. The only good thing about placing the order online is convenience I guess and the coupons.

Summary: Chain grocery with good deals and self checkout, but high prices on non-sale items - Use the App!Full review: After trying all the grocery stores in Hilo, I stick with Safeway because of their app. I cannot do paper coupons but I can easily clip deals in the app and they are automatically applied at Checkout, and so far, Safeway is the only grocery with self checkout. Since I mostly rely on Costco for meats and bulk items and the Farmers Market for produce, I don't visit Safeway often and usually stick to sale or Signature Select items which have been good quality. Five-dollar Friday can be good but it's usually mayhem! If you want something, go early!!

Safeway has a great selection of different food items and in general a helpful staff , unfortunately the sushi / hot cooked foods department was very unhelpful and rude, even pretended not to see me as I stood there waiting, thankfully the deli meat department stepped in and assisted. Mahalo Safeway staff with common sense customer service.

Also, it hits close to home from the mainland it feels like shopping in my home town which I miss everyday so all I do is go to Safeway and I'm home. This is the only grocery store to get specialty items on the east side. I HATE going inside there any time after early morning. It’s always packed and the lines to All the checkouts are crazy long.They can never keep items in stock.Very expensive even as a member and searching for “deals.”Also, why can’t they lay out chopsticks and sauce packets at the sushi and sandwich counters so you have to wait to ask the busy workers prepping food?💡They frequently have problems with their gas tanks and when it’s busy, it’s a giant cluster f** trying to get across traffic and people parked ridiculously in line to get to a pump.+Most of the time employees are helpful.+Save $ on gas
