What an interesting place; walked here to grab some squid for fishing bait, but we got to see way more than anticipated. They kind of have a security guard at the door due to the homelessness in the area. Was able to witness a smoking homeless guy try and get in but quickly dodged to the side to grab two can out of the trash. When we were checking out our squid, same smoking homeless guy had a basket full of stuff and was doing... Stuff..Anyways, probably not my 1st choice of grocery stores, but they have squid for fishing so yeah

This is owned and operated by Foodland. They got a good location in downtown but homeless people come hang outside the store which is kinda bothersome.Store is pretty clean and has most of the things that you want and need to purchase.Customer service is okay. Not that friendly though. But still will recommend you this store as this open late at night for your late fixed grocery.Happy juandering fellow Juanderers!

Such great employees at this location the deli and seafood counters have awesome people working there and the employees at the registers are always super friendly which keeps me coming back! I do suggest keeping your valuables hidden from sight due to the homeless issues in the area but just remain aware of wherever you are and whoever is around

There’s everything from fruits to prepared food and so on! Less expensive than elsewhere and if you give your phone number you will get a discount

After making the payment, we want to use the restroom. They told us “No restroom for customers. “ Wow. A big market without a restroom. Great design.

Starting to get too expensive compared to stores around there. I like to get poke there. I don't buy their sandwiches anymore because they have gotten so expensive. The clearance carts in the frozen food isle are no bargain. I have caught them trying to sell items higher than their shelf price. Charges 5 cents for bags now. Walmart and Target 1/2 the price. Busy store.

Oh boy..Hilos downtown Sack n Save was awesome. It's been a long time since I've been in there and I didn't recognize the place. Much more spacious and convenient. More room to turn the cart around. No foul orders of fish. Shelves fully stocked.all prices easily viewed..and the old wonderful roofed area to park. Loved it. The vegetables so fresh..

Excellent shopping features, and the most convenient grocery produce available at affordable prices. With zero items out-of-stock on the first of the month, the efficient, well trained and knowledgeable clerks demonstrate their dedication to their customers. Friendly cashier's, and dedicated courtesy clerks help you with every detail you create on your shopping list.

Great customer service! A guy pushing carts offered us a cart as soon as we got to the entrance. Then when my mom & I were looking for a sale item & one of the stock boys dropped what he was doing to help us. That same guy helped us again when we asked about one of the sale signs being on the wrong display. After answering our question he thanked us for informing him of the mismarked sign. The cashier was cheerful & friendly when we were checking out. I would definitely go to this location again.

Easy to find covered parking and the lot is pretty large with a security guard on site. The location allows the store to cater to both locals & tourists so be aware of your surroundings if you're a visitor. The staff is very pleasant and polite, the shelves are well stocked and the store is clean. Prices may seem on the high side if you're a tourist - Thats because most grocery items are expensive in Hawai'i unfortunately. Great selection of beers, wine and spirits, good selection of "grab-N-go food items.

One of my favourite places to shop locally. Entering the store the atmoshpere is so welcoming and if ever I need help looking for a particular product with their customer service well let me just tell you this, you won't leave the store without it for one and if its not in stock they will make every effort to find a store that does or have it in stock for you for your next visit.Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Highly recommended!!

Store is more worn-in now than some of the photos show. That said, I agree with other reviewers that they have pretty good ready-to-eat food. Their poké bar has a wide variety.

The folks here are so friendly and helpful and there's a lot of covered parking. They used to have better prices than most other grocery stores in Hilo but they're pretty pricey now. They sure make some tasty deli foods, especially the fried chicken that they sell by the piece, so ono and crunchy.

Downtown sack n save is my jam. They have my favorite poke. Can usually find some good deals and sometimes have killer sales on beer and wine. Cashiers super friendly and usually very fast. They're one of the few stores I see that open all their lanes when it gets busy.

They won't let cancer patients shop during kapuna hours. I have Leukemia and my immune system is compromised. The attendant at the front of the store said, " You must be 60 or older." Even after I told him I have leukemia. Also, this is the grocery store nearest the hospital and cancer center. During regular hours there's never any parking and there's always homeless or questionable people hanging out in the parking lot making the visit feel unsafe.

Employees were very helpful in letting me know about their special prices on popular items like Haagendaz icecream. The person putting away the poke stopped and served me 2 types on request. I was very happy with my service.

My number 1 go to place for groceries. The reduced bakery section comes in handy a lot and mostly use my reward certificates for Hawaiian airline miles. Plus they have my favorite poke. I prefer the downtown location over the puainako location.

Customer service lady, she's new unprofessional and always pretending that no customers exist, you make me stand long time waiting on someone to assist me but good thing the other cashier at the checkout lane helped me....next time I visit the store I will make sure I get your name. She walked away when she noticed someone is about to do transactions like she doesn't know. So STUPID, why get the job if you don't want to do it? Good you get to get free time walking around and make customers stands invisibly. That's a second time I stand at that customer service counter. Worse service here!

The meat section in this grocery store deserves an award and accolades. Incredible and hard-to-find variety of (muscle) meat and organ meats. Whether you are a traditional home cook or a chef specializing in exotic cuisines you will find what you need here.

First off, great beer and alcohol selection! Seafood bar has a wide variety of ready to eat dishes. Poké seems fresh. Pastrami at the deli counter is epic, as are the cheeses. Fair prices on steaks and chops, quality brands and cuts. Produce is tended to regularly to ensure freshness. Custommer service desk includes Western Union, very helpful for travelers. Oh, and two Redbox's.

If you live off-island be prepared to have your mind blown by grocery prices in Hawaii. I've literally seen $9 gallons of milk here before. It's insane. Sack and Save (or Sack & Sizzle as we like to call it) is probably the oldest grocery store in Hilo town. It is fairly small but has everything you need. Prices are in line with Hawaii (meaning 2x 3x higher than mainland)--but they have various items on special every day/week--like most grocery stores.Frequently I go there just for beer and poke to go--which are every day staples on the big island. (Back in the states Poke is the hot new trend; at least a dozen Poke places have opened up in Houston in the past couple of years--where there was literally zero befor that.) Go back to the fresh fish counter in the back corner and you can choose from several different types of poke--either a la carte / by the pount--or over rice. For like $7 you can get a delicious, healthy lunch. I get it to go and take it over to Coconut Island or Richardson's w/ a six-pack of Kona brew and have my lunch or dinner w/ a killer view.I give Sack & Save 4 stars mainly because it can be a little dingy at times... but that's partly because it's OLD. The parking lot / front of the store could use a good pressure washing and a coat of paint... and maybe some big pots of flowers or something to liven it up a bit. If you compare it the Safeway on the edge of town--which is much more typical of a huge, modern, mainland rocery store--it really feels old and dated and even dingier. BUT... that's part of the charm. AND... it's super convenient. KTA is just down the block... but MUCH smaller than the Sack & Sizzle.
