After reviewing some negative feedback here, it's evident that professionalism and respectful communication are lacking. While passion for animals is commendable, effective shelter management requires more than just love for animals. The primary goal should be to facilitate adoptions and provide a supportive environment for both animals and potential adopters. Based on my experience, I would like to provide the following observations for those considering adoption from this shelter:The organization appears to lack professionalism in its interactions and most of the time. If you're someone who works in customer service, (you already know) you get what you give. Not always but most of the timeOpportunities to address concerns or ask questions in a constructive manner seem limited and any attempt to do so may be taken personally and counted against youThere appears to be a policy restricting communication with other staff members for assistance or clarification.

Despite the name, this rescue (in addition to rescuing abused horses), also takes in dogs on death row.All animals are given age appropriate vaccines, spayed/neutered and nursed back to health on a partially foster based system. The rescue discloses any known medical problems. All the animals available for adoption are listed on their Petfinder along with any pertinent information on them.If you're looking for that special horse or dog to add to your life, consider the beautiful souls at South Georgia Equine Rescue!If you can't adopt but want to help, they happily accept donations and run a shop to help run their organization. They are also on the Treat app, a mobile app that makes a difference; by playing you help give animals in need treats and food. My Treat app dog is Mary Jane the German Shepherd.

Heather, the woman that runs the rescue, has a true love for animals & goes above & beyond to save them & does everything she can to ensure that they will have the best life possible. She's very knowledgeable about each animal group & is more than willing to help make their transition as easy as possible. We adopted a 4 - 5 month old female dog from her, drove from north Florida to Georgia to pick her up, and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. This dog has very good manners & is exceptionally well behaved. You can definitely tell that Heather spent some time with her.

I’m sorry but I was interested in this dog for my family, and due to waiting for meet ups, waiting for references on a very uncalled for extensive application, a shelter that helped with the same litter told some lies, and my spouse decided to run with and is highly protective of my young children, unfortunately he decided to wait last min on the final day we were suppose to get the dog and I explained this to the foster and rescue but the owner heather decided to give the next applicants the dog. Which is fine an understandable but once I explained how sorry I was and how regrettable this whole situation was. She responded with a very vindictive response a very unprofessional response accusing me of lies and as a us veteran and business owner myself this was very unprofessional. It broke my heart even more because I really really wanted the dog an didn’t need any more grief about it. My older dog is geting older and I wanted a younger dog to help retire him as my emotional support animal. I’m so upset and emotionally distraught from this whole situation. I was willing to help the rescue as well with people who might be interested but I guess they don’t want that much help with their animals.

I've adopted two dogs from SGER and I have nothing but excellent things to say about Heather. When I was looking to adopt, Heather was with me every step of the way and she continues to be a resource for me to this day. She reassured me that I am not alone and just because a dog has been adopted doesn't mean her help and assistance stop. I believe in Heather and her mission with SGER, she does the most incredible work and I love watching animals transform in her care. I could go on forever but there is no rescue better!

Heather with South Georgia Equine Rescue is wonderful and really cares about the animals she rescues. She even saved a baby mouse one time! I have fostered a couple of dogs for her and she checks in with me and offers help and supplies for them if needed. She gets them posted as soon as I say they’re home ready. She’s a wonderful rescue to foster one and great person and I wish I could do more to help her. She also pulls a lot of hard to adopt and money pit dogs from my shelter along with others and never fussed about it once. She is in rescue for all the right reasons and we adore her and I’m proud to work with her and call her a friend!❤️🐾

I love rescues and the meaning behind them but Heather Gavitt (the woman behind this rescue) is very ill-mannered and doesn’t care for the people who volunteer to help her, adopt, and/or help foster some of these animals. If you see or experience the way she responds or treats people, you’d know she’s extremely unprofessional and it truly shows. God forbid if you have a different view or opinion on something too.. she can’t take criticism and all you’ll hear is attitude in every sentence responds with. I agree that owning a dog is a commitment but some animals don’t fit with all people and it’s up to the rescue to take them back no matter what and FIND a home for them. With owning a rescue you’d know that unfortunately, there ARE going to be people who bring back a pet, that just comes with the job. And instead of being professional about it, she acts defensive, rude, and childish which makes for bad business. No rescue should be REFUSING to take back a dog btw.. that is a major red flag in itself because that’s what you’re supposed to do if things don’t work out with a pet. Sounds like she doesn’t care about the well being of the dog no? If you’re going to be a bully, maybe you shouldn’t be in a business around people or even animals for that matter who require good/positive energy. There are multiple people I know that have met, talked with, or helped foster for Heather too and they all say she is everything I stated above. Do better and be professional.

This has by far been the worst dog rescue experience, eight months ago we rescued a dog from this location, since I was no longer able to keep her. I got in touch with Ms. Heather to return her as per the agreement of my application. On the phone and via email, Heather was extremely disrespectful to us. She misrepresented the terms of the application and refused to take her back until I brought up what I agreed to on the application once again. I wouldn’t recommend getting a dog from here.

I love this rescue! I've adopted two puppies and an adult dog from heather and all three are enjoying life. She takes in all kinda of pets that need help and homes. She never gives up on the hard cases either! I love following her page and watching all the babies that find their forever homes through her. Being one of the few rescues in southern Georgia that takes in these babies is hard but with our support she does it and does it well! No pet left behind!

I never had any doings with rescue tell I meet Heather Gavitt who owns and runs this wonderful rescue with her daughter. She is so knowledgeable on the animals and deeply cares for them and their well being. I hate to think what would happen to these babies if she was not around to save them. The amount of dogs that are discarded in this area is astounding and the puppies that are just thrown away like garbage makes my heart hurt. I thank God every day to take care of his shepherd that watches over his creatures that can't talk or take care of themselves. This rescue needs all the assistance it can get. It is not a 9-5 job. This is a 24/7 job and most times with no help or very little. There's no vacations or fun time. I wonder how many people would take this task on and stay with it. Thank God for Heather and her daughter who give their All for the unwanted. Who nurses them back to life and then shows them love. Then when ready finds them the perfect home. I'm so very proud to support this rescue and honored to know these wonderful ladies. God Bless them.

Heather and her daughter at SGER are such wonderful people!! My grandmother's pup was mauled to an inch of her life and we didnt have the means to cover the vet bill, Heather stepped in without even knowing us! She has such true compassion for helping animals! She has such a drive to do all she can for each and every baby she comes across! 10/10 would recommend adopting from SGER!! Thank you for all you do!

In September 2021, we adopted a small female dog named Jewel, we have no regrets choosing to use South Georgia Equine Rescue Inc. Heather Gavitt, went above and beyond helping us, on the day of our adoption. It was raining that day, and once we got home with our new fur baby, she was nervous and scared. On her first potty walk, she slipped from her collar, and was running scared. Heather, drove all the way to Waycross, and called some of her friends as well, to help catch Jewel. All it took, was for Jewel to hear Heather's voice, and out of the woods she came. Her rescues falls in love with Mama Heather, and they miss her like crazy, while they adjust, to their new forever home. Jewel, is well adjusted and spoiled rotten, we Love her bunches😘

Ummmmm—-really just not enough words to describe the wonderfulness of Heather and South Georgia Equine— but I’ll give it a shot and share a few; honest, compassionate, unequivocal animal lover and rescuer, tireless, badass woman, loving, amazing Momma, animal whisperer and well….just overall amazing human being.We “met” Heather virtually… about a year ago…we were in search of adding to our 1 dog home… all of our pets have been… and absolutely must… be rescues… and Heather is a one woman show of amazingness and lots of fur babies 😊she was kind, patient, and completely understanding of the personality and dog that we wanted to give a forever home to… and two weeks ago we welcomed that dog into our home… and to quote Heather… “She is simply perfect“… I would also ascribe that sentence to Heather herself—“she is simply perfect”. Heather and her daughter do an incredible job of running this rescue! They have so many animals, mostly dogs, that they take wonderful care of and they are all loved and very well cared for! If you are looking for a forever pet I highly recommend adopting from here. You will not be sorry!

When I read all the other reviews about Heather I was skeptical to believe them all and thought “no one can be that nice”. Well I lied lol. Heather was awesome. Her level of commitment is so far above what I have seen elsewhere; she is passionate in her advocation for the animals she rescues and nothing stops her when she is helping them. Well organized and probably the best rescue I have ever been to. All the animals are happy and healthy. The owner and workers are helpful and make the process enjoyable for all parties involved. I would definitely recommend for adoptions or donations.

Absolutely the BEST, while probably the most underfunded rescue I have ever been associated with! SGER is an absolute miracle worker with these lost, ignored, unwanted, forgotten animals. I've seen them work miracles with animals others had all but given up on! They take on everything and deserve all the support they can get! I honestly don't know how they do it!

I do not personally know Heather but I follow her on social media and have watched her take in so many neglected animals and turn them around and find amazing homes for them some even look like completely different dogs after Heather gets them back 100% right.
