It's not a coincidence that all the bad reviews are about DR SCOTT HEMENWAY. I have a 2 year old female Shiba. She has been sick on and off for the last 3-4 weeks - lethargic, panting, not eating/drinking, tail tucked, shaking, overly alert & scared, doesn't want to walk. She has a few times now gotten blood on the couch or floor, which I notice after she gets up from sitting/laying down. She was spayed here at Precious Paws when she was a puppy (no complications that I know of). She is not bleeding from her bum nor is there blood in her urine - the blood is coming from her vagina. There is also an extreme fishy odor. I was told they could squeeze her in today, so we went in. We usually see Dr. Lovins - who is FANTASTIC - but only DR HEMENWAY was available. Her anxiety issues were completely ignored and I was told that her bleeding could be vomit. Excuse me?? Since when do dogs puke from their nether region? I was completely belittled by this man and felt very uncomfortable. He was rushing and acting as if he knows my own dog better than I do. I think I would know if my dog was throwing up. I work from home and am with her all day every day.LONG STORY SHORT - IF YOU ARE GOING TO BRING YOUR DOG HERE, AVOID DR HEMENWAY. I have never had an issue with Precious Paws until today, and am extremely disappointed. My family and I have been bringing our dogs here for years. Notice how all the reviews about him say he acts rushed and is rude. Get rid of this man. He does not care about your animal.

Receptionist was nasty and rude. I only take my dog there because location is close to my home. Very expensive. Even the vet didn't seem like he wanted to be there. They are just ok.

Our dog had an emergency and they fit her in. Our tech was great. All of the staff was helpful. Hoping we can get both of our pets in with them since we spend a great deal of time at the beach.

My dog went to the emergency vet two hours after being spayed here. These people butchered my dog. They used staples. Her breed is bulldog with thick skin, even the helpful ladies at the emergency vet said they should have used sutures and this shouldn’t have happened. I emailed precious paws the next day, also spoke with them over the phone. Over the phone they said “since it did not happen here we can not reimburse you” it DID in fact happen there. Negligence. I would not take your animals here. It’s been a month now and still no response to my email. The vet that saw her was Dr Scott Hemingway. I did not like him at all or how he handled my dog. My dog is perfectly safe now and that is all that matters to me. I have transferred her care and now looking forward to better treatment for my sweet girl.If you love your animal please do NOT take them to these disgusting people. Please read every 1 star review on here and take them into consideration, it could save your pets life. This is an awful place.

I do not recommend this place. Unfortunately it was the closest place for me being out of town. My dog suddenly passed away and I had to bring him in. They did not show any remorse. They told me his ashes would be back in a week when really the cremation place did not pick up until the following Thursday and this was on a Friday. I called to ask about paw impressions and they had an attitude when I did not understand what the foam impressions were then my sister called and they were just as rude. I don't think I ever heard sorry for your loss other then the vet tech who helped us brought my dog in for us to see him after he passed and she was still not that nice. They offered no explanation as to what could have happened and they did not even give me the option of the autopsy for pets I had to ask about it then decided against it. Never have I experienced an animal hospital so rude. I only crossed paths with 3 people there so im sure not all of them were like that but when you bring your dog in who has passed and you are crying - not even hearing an im sorry or anything really sucks. I would never go back here again ever.

I took my cat here for years for maintenance and wellness care, which was largely fine. They assisted me in diagnosing my cat with an issue when I was concerned for her. However, when she actually injured herself, I took her in for an emergency visit and was just sent away with three days of pain meds. The office was hectic and I felt as though I was pushed out the door. No X-rays were offered even though it was clear she was limping and it happened suddenly. I was told it was her arthritis flaring up. Almost two months later, her health started to fail and she lost nerve control in her leg and tail. I took her to the Ocean City location and was given steroids and medication. Again- no X-rays. After the steroids, she was worse than before. I called and was told to take her to a neurologist- which was 2 hours away in Maryland. I then took her to the ER in Salisbury where they actually took X-rays and they said she had a dislocated hip injury and possibly permanent nerve damage. I had to euthanize my poor girl because she was unable to walk and was going downhill fast. If you are having an issue with your pet that is acute- bring them to an ER and skip this office. They are too busy to be bothered to diagnose animals accurately. They are fine for wellness exams, but that’s about where it ends. Do not put an injury in their hands unless you are willing to be pushy to get to the root of the issue. My cat could have been treated early if they had just taken some simple X-rays.

We took our 16-1/2 year old chihuahua here 5/19/23 for blood pressure checks and urinalysis since she had diagnosed with high blood pressure and protein in urine in Florida one month prior and put on medication. The Florida Vet needed to know if the medication was helping. Her appointment was with Dr Scott Hemenway. We did not like the way he examined her by hitting her on her right side and listening to her heart repeatedly .He said he was more concerned with her heart murmur than kidneys. He prescribed an additional high blood pressure medication. We were skeptical and waited a week before starting it. The second appointment was an emergency visit because she was no longer eating and barely drinking. Dr Hemenway wanted her to stay on both medications even though I told him she started going downhill after starting the 2nd med. We discontinued the med he prescribed and nursed her back to health ourselves. Then drove 6 hours to her previous Vet in Pennsylvania where she was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease stage 2. We do not recommend Dr Scott Hemenway or Precious Paws to anyone. We gave one star only because that is the lowest we can give. Thanks to our Vet in Pennsylvania our little girl is alive and doing well. We have had many pets , horses, dogs, and cats over the years and never came across a Veterinarian we didn’t like until now. We hope this review helps someone with a senior pet find quality Veterinary care.

Absolutely the worst Vet in Bethany… Tried to get his teeth cleaned and after 1,000 dollars of pre Ops and check ups they told me it could be anywhere from 1200 to 2500 dollars more but wouldn’t give me a price… I arrived for his appointment and they said I had to do another prop and he needs another check up because the original pre op that they scheduled was to far away… I had enough and walked out… They said now I owe a 55 dollar no show fee… These guys are ridiculous and only want money.. They don’t care about your animal…. We have been using them for 5 years and now enough is enough… I’m out…..

They are the most compassionate, kind, customer service oriented group I could ever hope for. Been going with 3 animals for 8 years. I’d be lost without them. Cheap in price, NO. But you get what you pay for! Love them all. I trust them 109%. I’ll never know how they manage with all the new population growth. You be kind and loyal and they will do the same. Special thanks to Tania and Dr Lovens. We love you

We first brought our cat to precious paws after going to 2 other vets before them. Our cat is terrified of the vet and a trip to the vet usually includes hissing and scratching. Not at precious paws though. The vet techs and vets were amazing and she was very comfortable. I also loved how her examination was very thorough and we were able to get more information about the type of heart murmur Mika has. Once we adopted our dog i knew she would be going to precious paws. The only downside is they are cat and dog only, so my Guinea pigs have to go elsewhere.

Very professional and caring. Vet took time to answer all my questions. My first appt here and I was in and out in 45 minutes. Waiting area very quiet so as not to upset pets even more. Reasonable price.

To be perfectly candid, I’ve always been skeptical and distrusting of vets, so that should be clear before detailing my review. The short version — our 8y/o lab died. The long version includes 5 different centers, around 10 vets, and only one that diagnosed a disease; this adventure started nearly 2.5 years ago and is unrelated to Precious Paws, but they played a big part.Mid-2020, our lady Luna tore her ACL. Considering Luna’s size (85-90lb tall and lean), we were advised to put her through the TPLO surgery; we scheduled it for December 2020. The surgery went well, and in a follow-up, we were informed that her blood work showed elevated liver enzymes. We didn’t know what that meant but were advised that we should see a specialist; we did. We went to Atlantic Veterinary Internal Medicine & Oncology in Columbia, Maryland. They conducted an ultrasound and were unable to make a definitive diagnosis but told us a) it was cancer and Luna had 6 months or less or b) she was healthy and it was nothing to worry about. Our options were x) put Luna under surgery to biopsy the liver or y) wait and see. As explained and advised, we opted to wait and see; a biopsy would make her last months worse and ultimately wouldn’t have made a difference, we were told. Two years later, Luna was fully recovered but tore her other ACL while playing in the sand on the beach. We knew what to do; we researched a vet for the TPLO surgery and scheduled blood work. Again, elevated liver enzymes; she needed to be clearer for surgery. She was cleared to have the surgery on March 13th.Well, Luna only ate some of her dinner on March 2nd and refused to eat anything on March 3rd; we were in touch with the vet and scheduled an emergency visit on March 3rd.Diagnosis by Precious Paws: “pancreatitis” — keep Luna hydrated, start an antibiotic & anti inflammatory, ensure she was drinking, and give it time. We were advised to not worry as long as Luna would drink; Luna kept drinking water over the weekend. Come Tuesday, same advice — give it time if she was drinking. Luna was still drinking. But Tuesday night, she had a blank look — like she was looking through us — so we took her to Pets ER in Salisbury. Then we were told possible leptospirosis — 7-10 business days for a lab test. They started (proactively) another antibiotic for leptospirosis; otherwise, steady hydration in the meantime. We picked her up Wednesday morning (Pets ER wasn’t open during the day) and brought her to Precious Paws; they continued fluids and both antibiotics. Come Wednesday evening, they sent her home with fluids under the skin; we were told that Luna would be fine overnight. We brought Luna back in the morning, doctor would call after the “doctor’s meeting. All the doctors will be able to talk about her.” GREAT, we thought — surely several doctors will figure this out. We would receive a call after their meeting with a “plan” for the day; it was around 4:30pm that I received a call. The only remaining doctor in the practice called — they’re waiting on the results of the leptospirosis test. I asked, “what if that isn’t it?” I was told, “well, you could see a specialist”We immediately drove Luna to Annapolis where she was diagnosed the next morning (Friday morning) with Hepatitis/liver disease; we received a call at 11:45pm that Luna wouldn’t make it through the night — complete liver failure — and we put her down after saying goodbye around 1am.Do I blame Precious Paws, completely, for Luna’s death? I don’t. But I do wonder how good a practice is when three doctors — all of which knew Luna had elevated liver enzymes — diagnosed an issue with a different organ when issues presented primarily in the liver; they also cleared Luna for surgery 2 days after she died from complete liver failure which raised my eyebrows.Considering elevated liver enzymes, a quick google shows it’s either a) cancer or b) liver disease — not healthy — so we made the mistake of trusting Precious Paws with a common-sense conclusion.I’d love to take my business elsewhere, but Luna is dead.

Called them with a sick dog, ear issue. I was able to secure a medicine that stabilized the condition. I was also given their next available appointment which indicated the dogs condition was now normal. I felt that the treatment and expense was reasonable. I would recommend the Vets office to a friend.

I am very upset with this place My 5 year old lab had an emergency around Oct 6 and they couldn't squeeze me in and made my appt for Oct 28. I had to go to another vet to get treatment . Went to that vet 3 times trying to get answers because she just wasn't herself. Can't explain because it is too much. So eventually Oct 28 rolls around and notice that she has severe bruising on her belly and inner thigh that was spreading So I went up there and they did blood work and showed she had a low red blood platlette count the next morning she had a VERY large hematoma under her neck about the size of 2 baseballs and it started running up her neck. I was very concerned so took her to pet ER First of all the blood should have never been drawn from her neck. It should have been drawn from the paw or back end..Spent the weekend in pet er because I was afraid that the hematoma would bust and she would hemmorage to death. Followed up with my appt today because pet er needed her blood count to see if her plaletts had risen. Well needless to say I told him that was very unprofessional for him to take blood from her neck instead of her leg. I told him he was wrong and he basically said well, you don't have to bring her back here again. I said oh, trust me I won't. She will never go back there. Acted like he wasn't concerned or anything like he was just in a hurry. There is alot more to this story but too much to post Dr Hemeway
