A CORPORATE MONEY MACHINE. When I moved up from the city 20 years ago, The Big Y was a nice enough store to shop in. They had a bunch of disabled people working in the bagging section. Also, regular folks that I would recognize every time I checked out. They would celebrate employee of the month which was kind of cute. Their photo would be framed and placed on the wall as you exited the store.But over time, shopping there has become less and less enjoyable. About 12 years ago, they closed off the bulletin board behind glass. I thought - well that's not very accommodating to the locals. Then the signs started going up: NO LOITERING in the parking lot. Then the cameras started going up to watch your every move. Make sure you are not STEALING! The baggers vanished, so you had to bag your own groceries, And eventually, they stopped celebrating Employee of the Month. Then the cashiers started to disappear. And most recently, they stopped having cashiers at all. You now have to do the cashier’s work and not get paid for it. The other night I was in the store and noticed there were only two people working, where they once had 20 people sprinkled around departments, customer service, deli, etc. WOW!Slowly but surely the place has become more bland, with less selections, higher prices, and fewer employees. Now with the “redesign” of the store it has an empty, soulless warehouse feel. I hate going there.I think the Big Y in Newtown is a seriously sinking ship and quite frankly - good riddance. I shop across the street where the atmosphere and employees are plenty, have a smile on their faces and BAG YOUR GROCERIES.

Clean and spacious! Prices seem decent too for groceries. I like how it had a bakery inside with seats for u to sit and munch.

Stopped by on a Saturday evening to pick up dinner along with some groceries for our Airbnb while staying in Newtown. The store and staff are lovely. A vast selection of all the items you need, very clean and organized in a convenient location.

I love this store. What blows me away each time i am there is how attentive the store manager is. He can be seen each time I am shopping, checking with every department, helping people as needed, straightening out things - i have never seen that before honestly. Super hands on and it shows - his team is excellent and the store is immaculate.

Store is usually clean, lots of staff on hand if you need help or have a question. Produce is not #1 in town, Caraluzzi wins that every time.There are better values here I believe.

Stopped in for soup at lunchtime. Looking for broccoli and cheese but not today. Settled for, shrimp and corn chowder. Had to scrape the bottom to fill my 16 oz cup and not sure if I located any shrimp. But delicious. Must arrive earlier for best selection. My fault. They have the best soups. Even on a warm day, they go fast. Says something!

I had an interesting experience this afternoon behind the sandwich counter.A woman with thick rimmed black glasses was having a very difficult time speaking kindly and making sandwiches for people of color. It was uncomfortable to watch and experience. I understand she may be angry for slinging sandwiches during the peak of her life, but losing your marbles because someone told you to put lettuce on their sandwich might be a sign to start working on unresolved trauma.

I bought an at&t refill card and the card was used. They didn’t reimbursed me. I went to the store several times, they said that will call back and never received a call from them. It’s their responsability for what they sell and doesn’t work, but they didn’t take any action for my loss. I can’t let anyone steal my hard earned money. I lost 40$, but they lost a customer.

The staff at this location are so wonderful! I've only been here a handful of times, each time they were so sweet and on point. You can call and ask a question and they don't give you the run around, they don't do that thing where they transfer you to 80 different people just to eventually end up back at the same place... They are great!

I shop by Instacar app and I love shopping in that store, the store manager is always attentive and helping everyone, the cashiers are also very friendly, the guy who works in the product department is always willing to help when I can't find the products.🤗

Sam the 17 yr old cashier is an absolute joy. Hes wise beyond his years and a great representative of your store. You don't find many teenagers like him...kind, friendly and funny. He made my trip to the grocery store pleasent and fun! Great job Sam!

Vig why in Newtown on Queen street is wonderful they have fabulous managers in a caring staff. All of the food is wonderful fresh and looks great and tastes great. If you have any problems you simply bring it back or speak to one of the managers they are all very attentive there I highly recommend them and that is where I do most Of my grocery shopping

The newtown location is good. I would love to see them carry more local products. They have Kimberly farms milk which is fantastic but there is so much more locally that they can be a part of.

Beautiful market! The produce was fresh and abundant! The bakery,seafood, deli and meat departments are really something!to see! Everyone of the employees were polite, helpful and made a point of saying hello! Another plus is that everything is spotless! Definately worth the drive from Ridgefield. Big Y is my new market!

Classic Big Y. I mean it’s less expensive than the shop across the road so I don’t know why you’d chose that one over this one. Also, the donuts completely out preform Dunkin and Caraluzzi’s.

The big y in newtown ct MUST stop allowing parents to dump their kids there! Any school afternoon, when you walk in they're swarming the store! Disruptive and annoying brats! Their parents need to bring them home!

So this review is past due but I wanted to express what a good experience I had at this Big Y recently. It's especially important to me to use my own recycled bags when checking out. When I went shopping here the other day I accidentally only brought one of my bags in but purchased a considerable amount of groceries. I asked my bagger, Liz, to fit all of the groceries in the one bag if possible, but that if she couldn't it was totally fine. As I was waiting for all of my items to be rung out, Joe - my cashier, began to instruct Liz on how to maximize the space in the bag. He rang my items through strategically as if he was playing an expert level game of tetris. They continued to work as a team in order to make sure my groceries all fit. I must say I've never seen anything like this - It was so incredibly thoughtful and efficient. I'm really grateful that people like this exist. Their recognition of the importance to me (a totally high-maintenance person) that I use my own bag was above and beyond.

They are supposed to open at 7 am but they will let you in early if they see you waiting. Get the muffins fresh. They are warm and they will add extra icing. Who doesn't want extra icing?

Great sales at this store, but it would be better if the BOGO price were available in the advertisement so you could see if you are paying 2x the price for one or getting a deal that is worth the asking price

Hot foods make a great 30" wedge that easily feeds a Sunday afternoon football party. They recently added fresh sushi chef to the kitchen. Bakery turns out finely decorated cakes and pastries. Meh.
