Having been shopping here for years but after having moved away and then back recently, it's unfortunately a completely different place. I've just returned from there and the at most limited selection is exorbitantly overpriced with little actual value reflected back in the product. With the new restricted hours and cutting of alcohol sales, I would be surprised if they intend to stay open long term. I can't see it lasting in its current state. Produce is still somewhat reasonably priced, but that's really all there worth the price.

I've been shopping at this market for years because of its convenient location, even though the prices are quite high. Recently, I had a very uncomfortable and inappropriate experience. While shopping for a few items, one of the employees, with whom I've interacted before and knows I'm Hispanic, followed me through the store and questioned me specifically about a pack of ground beef. I showed him it was in my grocery bag with the other items I intended to purchase, but it felt like he was suggesting I might be stealing it. I can't help but wonder if I would have been treated this way if I weren't Hispanic. Such behavior made me feel targeted and unwelcome, and it needs to be addressed. Shoppers deserve to be treated with respect regardless of their ethnicity.

Very nice older gentleman manager. I love their meat specials. They have a great variety of international foods. If you are polite they honor their mistakes. Do not yell at them, they are great and polite members of society who work there and keep the store open for us.

The selection is okay, they do have some good CT products like those from Arethusa. The produce section is majorly lacking but the real problem is the constant homeless presence which the staff do little to nothing to stop.

I've noticed this building for months and I finally had time to check it out. This is honestly one of the most amazing markets I've shopped at. First, its beautiful and spotless. There's so much to choose from, pretty much all organic. I was thoroughly impressed. Very helpful staff, friendly patrons. Nice little cafeteria area. Coffee and tea station (they have blue agave nectar). Such a health conscious environment!

I live locally and have loved this market for over five years now, and have shopped here multiple times a week regularly. They’ve always come through in a pinch after a long work day. Now they’re suddenly going to stop selling alcohol AND changed their hours drastically. A 7pm close time in the city? That’s ridiculous and disappointing. I’m sad to have to take my weekly business elsewhere now.

This place is just ok. It has potential seems understaffed. There are definitely better food options in New Haven.

In one visit two other customers had dogs on long leads obviously not service dogs. One of the dogs actually came up to me and was trying to sniff me. Told the guy to get his dog and he laughed. The staff should care more and either not allow dogs or do something when they see that happen.

THANK GOD THEY FINALLY HAVE NEW CASHIERS THAT DO THEIR JOBS! Without an attitude and with a smile on their face. The new girls are great

They have mice and a very rude manager! It was the second time we were seeing mice running inside the supermarket and we were telling one of their managers in store. She got so angry and started yelling “what do you want me to do, go on the floor catch the mice?” and turned the back on us. Will never step foot in that supermarket again!

I shop at Elm City Market, a few times per month. Their greens and other vegetables are fairly priced. They have an amazing selection of healthy beverages. If organic and healthy is your thing, Elm City Market is one of the best.

I was so thankful when elm city market opened. For a reasonably small place, they have a great selection of healthy produce and natural brands. Their fruit/veg section is always nicely stocked and they have more than just the average options for GF, Vegans, veg, and paleo. In my experience the staff has always been very friendly, happy, and helpful. The cafe is nice for a quick sit down and they always have a colorful selection of flowers and house plants for purchase. The prices are general higher than say Trader Joe's, etc. but it's well worth it for the convenience!

Love to gather here for informal, sometimes formal meetings and enjoy the markers ambience as well. You can depend on locally sourced foods and the options of having a nice cup of Joe and a well balanced organic breakfast served as well. I just purchased 2 dairy free coffee creamers from there and I am disappointed in this purchase, I payed almost 6 bucks for each and the creamer was coddled.

If you had asked me to review this place 2 years ago I would have given it a perfect 5 but since then the service and quality have gone downhill. First off, every time I go there I go to the deli counter to start my order. There may be one person or 5 people behind the counter but no one EVER greets the customers and it’s always the customer that has to get the attention of a staff member. They may ask you to wait because they are on their cell phone or talking with a colleague about their upcoming weekend plans (yes, that really happened twice to other people that I saw) and when they finally ask you what you want, that’s when the waiting game really begins. I’ve never seen such slower service in my life! It took one staff member 5 minutes to locate a to-go box and place an already cooked chicken breast in it. It then took another staff member almost 20 minutes to make a salad (and mind you…they were working on this same salad the whole time…they just moved very slowly and were talking with their colleagues at the same time [which I think slowed them down considerably]). And to make matters worse, the salads use to be huge and over the last 2 years they have shrunk considerably.I am a very patient person and always thank the staff for preparing my order. I also always genuinely ask how they are, hoping their day is going well. In the end I truly hope this place focuses more on customer service versus price increases. I will not give up on them and hope to return with a more favorable review in the very near future.

A great way to grab a snack or a really nice lunch as you come off the train!

There's some good quality food here but the price markup is inexcusable. As one of the only walkable large grocers downtown anybody without a vehicle is held captive to the prices here. Expect to pay almost double for meat, breads, produce, and other staples, or deal with getting low volume / low quality options from the dollar store across the street. Elm City Market takes advantage of its captive audience and gouges everyone for their last pennies. The apartments attached to the building are luxury Yalies but the grocery should be serving more than just one apartment building. Having some more affordable options for locals would do a lot.

Price are out of control. Selection limited too. They do serve hot food, sandwichs, soup, coffee. They also have pre made wraps and pre made meals to heat up. Very good. A little expensive though. ALOT of local grown and made items. Convenient location downtown. Helpful employees.Edit as of 10/20/2023Been shopping here for years. Usually to get specific items I can't get anywhere else. Or because it's convenient to grab this or that on the way home. I stopped in the other day to grab my husband a SPECIFIC item in the pre made sandwich/wrap section. They didn't have it so I browsed for a few. It was Saturday and my bus wasn't coming for about 15 minutes. I had a couple of reusable bags filled with stuff from shopping already downtown. Never been a problem... I go to leave and get stopped because they believe, for some reason, I have products I did not pay for!! I was SO EMBARRASSED!! Thank God everything in my bags they do NOT sell there. I'm not a receipt keeper. So if it wasn't for the simple fact that they do not sell any of my pre bought products. I don't know how this would have ended. They rude lady didn't apologize. Still had an attitude. And still some how tried blaming ME for their mistake because I had bags with me. So disappointed. I'll probably never step foot in this store again..

Consistently low-quality customer service and food quality. Often times, orders for to-go/cafeteria food are simply incorrect. For the upcharge Elm City Market charges on most products (think near the 200% ballpark), you would expect them to not have expired goods and have a high level of customer service (nope, you'd be wrong). I understand there is a limitation in grocery accessibility, especially in downtown New Haven, but honestly consider using delivery services or making the trek to a larger grocery chain.

I came in the other day to return my drumsticks. The chicken was rotten. They were kind an enough to replace it. But I will no longer buy meat here.

The quality of the products are great. A little pricey I think. There is also a little area where you can sit to eat. They have sandwiches and other food, coffee and tea.

Absurdly high prices on most things, I only buy a select few groceries here just because I can rationalize the price to quality on them. Especially don't buy meat here, it feels like you're paying for the whole animal when you're getting a handful's worth.Cheese, bread, milk, and drinks are reasonably priced, good quality and local sources on them. Store itself is a bit cramped, and the layout forever eludes me, but it's nice enough. The employees are great, no issues with them.

Always worth a stop late in the day for high quality backed goods at a discounted price.Store is well stocked with quality products. A great downtown amenity.

The store has pretty great quality meat and produce, but some major drawbacks. If anything, I IMPLORE you to be very careful about keeping an eye on the prices because I have gone several times, and they tried to overcharge me on several items. It wouldn’t be so bad if the workers did anything to fix the issue, but I don’t blame them if they don’t really care since they probably don’t get paid enough to care too much. As an example, there were limes and broccoli listed as $1.99 per pound each, and I went one day and grabbed a pound of limes and a pound of broccoli that, at the register, both came out to be three dollars and some change. I told the worker “those are both supposed to be $2 a pound” and he says “yeah they are,” so I assumed maybe my math was wrong or something, but upon checking the receipt after leaving, the limes said $2.99/lb and the broccoli $2.49/lb instead of $1.99 each. Another day I went to get the same limes (I need them for cocktails lol), and a different worker this time rang up the limes individually (instead of per pound) at over a dollar a piece, so it was like $7+ for what should have again been $2. When I brought it up with them, they just said the register wouldn’t ring them up by weight (even though I had bought them before by weight). This kind of experience has happened to me several times with various different produce, and they usually aren’t the least bit helpful in fixing it. It’s good produce, but I’d like to pay the actual listed price for it when I go, and instead I end up telling them to take it off my bill because I’m not going to spend a 350% markup on a few limes. Besides that, they tend to have reasonably priced produce and such, but their spices are ridiculously overpriced, so if you need those just go to dollar general across the street. Their kitchen equipment is also pretty poor quality. I needed a meat thermometer and just grabbed one from them since they’re the closest store to me, and it didn’t even work at all. If your into organics and all that, they have a lot of options for that at least, and they have a decent selection of snacks outside of the normal big brands you’ll find in Walmart or anything, but the issue with pricing is a pretty big deal to me, and they really need to straighten that out.

Has an interesting selection and prepped meals and baked goods. Items are severely overpriced. Could be much more affordable for staples, you might need to make a second stop at the Dollar General across the street if you need it. Wish I could get everything in one place instead of making two trips, though. Service has taken a dive recently as well, possibly they're understaffed. The owner clearly doesn't care because they have a captive market in the attached apartments.I think every other trip here had me popping on to lower my rating a star and here we are at the bottom. Would be nice to have a walkable and affordable grocery downtown but I guess in this city we only get one of those things not both.

Horrible place to work. Worked here a month in here’s some facts. This girl tiana or what ever her name was was horrible to coustmers and co workers….. saw her make a woman cry. My manager was going on dates with one of the staff. All the feed back I got from the top manager was I was doing a great job until I was fired with no warning explanation or reason other than “budget cuts”. It was devastating to my financial situation and I tried my best. Don’t support this place.

I have NO IDEA who or what gave this place good reviews. Yes, New Haven is a barren land when it comes to stores and options but even then! The packaged produce had a milky liquid in it. The dips expired. A general hodge-podge of things. Expensive spice options but no garlic or onion powder?? Make it make sense. Then the girl at the check out line... Was having a conversation I was pretty confused about, till I realized she was talking to me AND someone else on the phone via headphones 😂Add the homeless problem outside and it's a HARD no for me.

I know many people will say they can be pricy BUT you find the most delicious little things here like the pastries, already made food (hot & cold) they carry a lot of vegan stuff which you cant find much at stop and shop and etc

This market sadly is going downhill. It started off as a mini Whole Foods with excellent prepared foods, salads and sandwiches, but counter service has become too slow for lunch hour, and they’re gradually replacing higher-end items with regular things you can get much cheaper elsewhere. Last straw for me is the replacement of the beautiful cheese case with pre-packaged boars head cheese and meats. No longer worth the extra expense for regular shopping. It’s barely hanging on to 3 stars.
