I stayed in Salida for weeks during a hiking trip out west, and my lord what a great butcher shop. In addition to all of the cool odds and ends they have in stock, their meats are simply fantastic. My father was a butcher / meat cutter for his entire professional career, so it was easy to tell that Scanga Meat Company's selection was top notch. Everything in their shop had a similar level of quality, as well. Overall, I must have stopped here several times, and I was never disappointed no matter what I chose to prepare that day.

Awesome assortment of unique sauces, rubs, jellies, preserves, pickled veggies, meats, cheeses and meat rubs!We tried Scangas strawberry rhubarb preserves and Louisiana Hot Sausage! Both are delicious! The sausage is outstanding. We made a type of jambalaya with some of our sausage. So good! Definitely worth the stop and we look forward to trying more of the unique items sold at Scanga Meat company in the near future.

Who cares about grass fed when you can buy locally grown meat? My issue with corn fed is mass production and animal cruelty... not really something to be concerned of here at Scanga. I feed my dog a partially raw diet so we come here for his muscle meat. They have the beef heart which the dog loves. The prices on everything is soooo great. We drive over an hour to get here, but we are told they deliver to our area of Fairplay. We just like the drive honestly.I pick up shelf items here too that I'd otherwise imagine needing to drive to a big city for. Special pastas, sauces, condiments, cheese, olives, etc. Manicotti pasta was a nice surprise on my last visit and we are excited for that for dinner.They don't "do chickens" but have chicken from other sources. We usually stock up on pork, beef and some frozen shellfish here.

I love this place normally but i asked them for frozen cheese that was not expired. They said the cheese was fine to eat. I mean to each their own but i bought one a week prior and had it in the freezer then it had mold.

The meat from this place is really good. We’ve been stopping on our way from out of state to the Western Slope the past few years to pick up bone-in pork roast for our family’s Christmas dinner. We called ahead to reserve one this year on Wednesday at noon (today is Friday) and they told us they had plenty and we didn’t need to reserve one. We told them we would be picking up on Friday and they said that was no problem. Well, we got there today to pick it up, and they were completely out and asked if we had reserved one. This is what us and the rest of our family were counting on for our dinner and had everything else planned around. We specifically drove through Salida solely to get that meat. This all would have been avoided if they had just taken our reservation per usual. Super disappointing and will not be returning in the future.

What an amazing selection of meats! Bought ground breakfast sausage, ground beef, beef hot dogs, cheese, olives and frozen quail (to smoke for Easter). So friendly and helpful. Can't believe we've been to Salida dozens of times and are only just now discovering this wonderful market!

A real butcher shop. Fresh, beautiful cuts of beef. So many other choices of proteins like fish, scallops, crab, octopus, pork, sausages, lamb...etc. Lots of cheeses and spices. Just stop in and you will find something you like.

Very pleased to see this terrific little butcher shop has garnered such a high rating - they deserve it. Their sausages (particularly the Italians and Polish) are great, and are an excellent value if you buy 36 (less than $1 per link - we freeze them). The tuna steaks are also top-quality. Excellent variety and service. Very much worth going a little out of your way to visit.

Great selection (especially for a small town). Even more amazing? The price! Specialty items (cookies, jams, hot sauce, mixes, etc.) are accordingly expensive but the MEAT..... THE MEAT is fresh (the cows are in the back, humanely treated..happiest possible bovine), perfectly cut (butchered on site), and the price reflects the farm to table philosophy, eliminating costs associated with transportation and refrigeration while providing affordable food choices for everyone. (By "affordable" I mean noticeably less expensive than any other grocery store or market.) Family owned and operated... This is how a market should be.

You can shop for gourmet items not commonly found at local grocery stores like Italian imports and a varied cheese selection. The meat market is hit and miss because retail is not their primary focus. I do consistently find frozen duck (including breasts) and good quality ground beef and fresh chicken, all at good prices. There's usually steak, which ain't cheap. Sometimes they have baby back pork ribs. Just depends.

They're always great! Really good cheeses, I saw a huge boneless leg of lamb, they have a great sale on shrimp, I love their Cajun sausage, they have chorizo, we got breaded perch we got brats, very good, and Bleu cheese, which is what I got. They have great customer service.

Stopped in yesterday to try them out. Not worth the money or time. I spent $75 on two porterhouse steaks, the meat was nothing different then what you get in the store. Bought an $8 package of bacon, again nothing special. The scallops were mush and probably the worst scallops I've ever bought. The beer cheese had zero beer flavor. The only good thing I bought (and wasn't anything great) were the cannoli cookies.

Nice! I walked in to see a great selection of fresh beef and cheeses. I am always looking for beef liver which is hard to find at times. I got a nice amount of fresh liver and very satisfied! You got yourselves a regular now!

The meat is fresh and reasonably priced which is why I drive over an hour to shop here, however, today I drove the hourish trip and I was not happy at all with the customer service I received from the young lady behind the counter. I seriously do not want to drive that long to be made to feel like I'm an inconvenience. The way I'm treated plays a huge part in what business I shop at.

Absolutely the most horrible experience I've ever had in a store. I walked in and it was awhile before any of the 4 workers there would even acknowledge me. When one finally did, I asked for top round. The lady did not know the difference between top round and rump roast. When I explained I was making jerky, and asked for the leanest meat they have (they were out of top round), they said grass fed is in a freezer. Guys, I can't even begin to explain what I saw. Brown, old, freezer burnt meat barely scrapes the surface. I will not be returning, and I suggest everyone avoid this place at all cost.

We have been going to scanga for years. We like their meats and selections. Lately the help at the counter has been not so good. They have the best fresh bread and have always sliced it for me. A few weeks ago when I asked for it to be sliced, the girl told me she wasn't supposed to and seemed angry about it. She did finally slice it for me but waded and folded it back into the package. It was a mess. Last Friday I had them, different girl, slice some lunch meat and when I got home and looked at it, it was shredded into little pieces and waded into a ball in the package. Also had shredded pieces of the original plastic wrapper from the meat mixed into it. Had to pick the plastic out before eating. Not sure I will return.

We have been going to Scania for four years. This is a very fine Meat Company and the selection is great! Hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Customer service and quality of the products are the best.

i tried to return some ground beef that was all sticky, smelled when i bought it. one of the owners refused to even exchange it. he screamed at me, told me to get out. accused me twice of probably leaving it in my car for three days because it wasn't possible that meat was bad because he had "thrown all that stuff out and reground fresh meat" the day before i bought it. they did not throw it all out, i got one. this is after buying meat there for 43 years, before he was even born! just remember when shopping there, there are no returns. any problem with any products is the customers fault.

The best hot dogs and sausages. The price is high compared to brand name meats, but their quality is well worth it. My only complaint is that they do not have online ordering.

Good meat market, we tend to search out local businesses when we vist. Scanga had a exceptional aray of meats, fish and sausages. Prices were fair and reasonable and employees were friendly. Would shop at Scanga again

Scanga is a great place to go if you want fresh and quality. The prices are more than reasonable and even better when they have their specials. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Recommended that you stop in and taste the deference!

EDIT: being from out of town, I was unaware they offered curbside service and deliveries. I should have called! PREVIOUS POST:(I don't trust that it will be a safe shopping experience during the pandemic. No mention of masks, or curbside pick-up.And, selling party platters and big containers of dips during a time when we shouldn't be gathering in large groups? Doesn't build confidence, sorry to say.)
