This cultural center has lots of reading material and intriguing stories portrayed through well maintained displays. We learned about how this military fort was strategically placed in the borderlands and was designed to coerce Indian tribes onto reservations. It’s also rich in the history of understanding the lesser known stories of Indigenous Tribes of Colorado, Buffalo Soldier, and Spanish land grant communities. They have extremely informative exhibits; you can tell that the museum does their best to convey these historical perspectives through “as true-to-life as possible” displays.

I had the good fortune to tour this fort and museum last week while passing through on a road trip. The historical aspects were interesting and stories well told. But my favorite part was the new art installation “Viva la Causa,” a sharp look at America’s pursuit of manifest destiny and the impact on indigenous people and African Americans.

The fort has a lot of history. You can see how the soldiers lived on a daily basis while serving. Anyone interested in military history visiting Fort Garland should stop and take part in this site.Price for entry: $7.00

This is an authentic fort with an authentic history from the late 1800s much of that history is documented in the different buildings of the fort. It may surprise you to learn that this four is located in the middle of a plane with the ability to see for long distances and the ability to travel in multiple directions rather than at a strategic choke point. In its heyday it was a key intersection between settlers from the East and the traditional native people who lived in this area.

While this is a historic military fort strategically placed in the borderlands and purposed to genocidally coerice Indian tribes onto reservations, it is also rich in the history of understanding a lesser known stories of Colorado -Indigenous, Buffalo Soldier, Spanish land grant communities. Two amazing exhibits that contemporize these histories thru art.

Total suprise, wasn't expecting much when we stopped. Quality displays for the history of the fort. Really enjoyed the Lego fort, the buffalo information and the buffalo soldiers. Also the staff was really nice and talked to us about the fort's history. Lastly, I appreciated the diversity in the gift shop, thought we might just end up with some plastic junk, but found a beautiful kids book on the buffalo soldiers and some hand made pottery. Thanks!

Very cool Historic Site!I worked one summer for Fort Laramie NHS in Wyoming. It was supper cool to see some of the differences and a lot of the similarities between the two Forts. The guard house was the most striking difference. While not a good place to be at either Fort, Fort Garland's seemed a lot more tolerable place to be locked up.Fort Garland has a lot of artifacts on display and good historical interpretation. My favorite was seeing Kit Carson's rifle!

Wonderfully preserved site...Museums aren't really my thing. I think just due to information overload at them. However, this was a great site to learn about the fort, the Utes and Buffalo soldiers! I especially appreciated that it didn't gloss over some of the unsavory aspects of history.

Fort Garland Museum is a gold mine of civil war history and particularly the Buffalo Soldiers and Kit Carson, as this is where they were stationed. The natives were known to have said, "When the snow hits the mountain, you can see the Buffalo ascending up Mt. Blanca! It's astounding! Can you see it?

We would probably go again once the new native-focused exhibit is complete. In general, pretty good museum, especially for the price. Unless it's an event, I would not consider this super kid friendly for under 10. It's a lot of reading, very little interactivity. Most of the exhibits were really interesting and informative, but you can tell some of the information is definitely...outdated--including one 'n' word on a poster within the buffalo soldiers exhibit. That was really disappointing, especially as it's not even a direct quote. I think the museum should strongly consider removing. If we went again, I would book the tour in advance; it's only $3 but you can't get one without advance notice. If you go in winter/spring, dress warm! The buildings are drafty!

Knowledgeable staff! Thought provoking exhibits. An authentic late 1800s Army fort. Self tour takes about 1 hour.

This is a very important fort in the story of westward expansionism. Many original adobe buildings chock full of artifacts. This was an important union fort in the civil war. In 1858 it was the middle of nowhere...still is. The gift shop has local jams and jellies native American crafts and a bookstore to satisfy any western bibliophile. If you are a Ghostbusters you are in for a real treat!

This place gives a good picture of how things were in the 1800's. The Buffalo Soldiers were stationed these for 3 years. Kit Carson was one of the Base Commanders. Very good restorations.
