Great experience! The roads on the way in were the first adventure, but after navigating those, you'll find yourself surrounded by incredible vistas while learning valuable skills to keep you alive in the wilderness! Jason and Reuben were great instructors, both with fantastic personalities. I would absolutely love to come back and learn more!

Amazing course! Very professional, informed, and fun instructors. The location was beautiful and the lessons have carried over to my everyday life. Can’t wait to get back out and do another class! Shoutout to Jason, Jess, and Ruben for being the greatest instructors of my life!

I survived and successfully completed the Five Day Outdoor Survival Skills-Intermediate 201 course at TSU in Colorado way up in the Rocky Mountains this week where class is held in the wild and students camp for the entire time in the backcountry. Training at The Survival University is hard work but it’s an amazing school with incredible instructors. Patient. Hands on. They are genuine about sharing their knowledge. It’s also a fun time around the campfire at night when class is done.“Hutch” is the man! What an unbelievable fount of knowledge. Jason is an owner who will challenge you to reach your potential. He also pays close attention to overall safety, course fluidity, and subject matter. He does anything to make sure his students and clients are safe-even if it’s a middle of the night mobilization in response to a bear scare that turned out to be a cow! A bonus is getting cuddles with his pooch, Stryker.Thank you, guys, for helping me on my wilderness survival journey. It’s an honor to be trained by legit mountain men.

I didn't die! Just finished the 5 day 101 course. What a great experience! Starting a fire with primitive techniques like a bow drill is something I have always wanted to do. Today I did just that with a bow drill that I made myself and with tinder I gathered and prepped myself. So satisfying.TSU taught me what I should bring into the wilderness to survive. And they also taught me how to survive if I'm a bonehead and don't bring that stuff. My knife sharpening skills were elevated to lightsaber level by Ruben. They have instructors who are experts in different things so the option to ask the fire guy or the knife guy deep technical questions is there.Friendly, inclusive instructors without egos. Highly recommended. I live in Nevada and it was worth the drive.

I participated in the 4 day adventure hike and what an adventure it was. I have never experienced such a hike before in my life and I loved the experience. The guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. They were there to help me with anything I needed or to answer any questions I had. I would definitely recommend The Survival University to anyone who is looking to experience the ultimate outdoor adventure.

SPA RETREAT FOR MENIncredible experience. I have a decent hiking and backpacking background and was hoping to learn some deeper survival fundamentals. The 5-day course delivered all that and then some. Jason was an incredible guide with a seemingly infinite well of knowledge. Every question I had Jason had an answer. In any instance he couldn't provide 100% clarity, he always had a handy resource to point me to. I now feel more confident in the outdoors than ever, met some great friends along the way and returned to my 9-to-5 with a cooler head and greater appreciation for what really matters. I can't wait to show off my new skills with friends camping this summer -- HIGHLY recommend this course!

We had been looking for a map and compass navigation class for some time (over 6 months) when we found The Survival University. I had previous experience with navigation, and tried to teach my wife Susan, but that didn’t go over so well, so I thought it best to seek out a professional navigation instructor.I wanted a private class as my wife Susan was very ambivalent about taking a class with other people, as she felt really out of her comfort zone. Jason with TSU was very accommodating, and set us up with TSU navigation instructor Hutch for a two day map and compass class, and allowed us to camp on sight , saving travel time from a local hotel or camp ground.I really wanted Susan to get a solid foundation to be able to use a map and compass for hiking and backpacking, so she could get back to the trail head or go for help in case there was an accident.Hutch was a phenomenal instructor, right out of the gate, he made us feel welcome in the outdoor setting, and spent a lot of time explaining the fundamentals and explained things in a way that did not intimidate Susan, and he was able to keep her attention with his stories and experiences, allowing her to relate to different situations.Hutch gave us way more information than I expected, and he set up practical field navigation scenarios so we could test out our new skills.Hutch was very thorough and excited about the topic, and his enthusiasm for teaching allowed us to explore the topic in great detail. I was not even aware of some things you could do with a map and compass. We now have to practice, but it was one of the best outdoor skills class we’ve ever taken. We plan to take some other classes in the springSusan & Scott F.

My son and I and his uncle (my brother-in-law) spent five days in the mountains of Colorado, taking the Outdoor Survival Basics 101 class at The Survival University. It was an amazing experience to be able to camp out and learn both primitive and more modern bushcraft survival skills, while spending quality time with each other, and with the new friends we made in our classmates and instructors. Quality time was spent together, cool skills were learned, and awesome memories were created…I’d highly recommend this class (or any of the other more specific classes - this one was a broad overview of many different skills) for anyone interested in getting back to nature, camping, survival, bushcraft, etc… the program was informative and fun, and our instructors (Jason and Jess) were excellent. Both are knowledgeable, helpful, down-to-earth, and fun… they made class enjoyable and memorable. I hope to come back and take another class sometime in the future…

I took the five-day survival basics class and had a wonderful time. You could not ask for better instructors with Jason and Ruben. It was immediately clear they both were extremely knowledgeable in survival and bushcraft. Their explanation of all of the concepts were clear and concise, and they were happy to show you a second or third or 50th time if you needed help. More importantly, they were approachable, kind, and very funny! There was great camaraderie in our group and we all came from different backgrounds and had different levels of experience. If you are looking for survival skills, this is your spot! I’m already looking forward to taking another class. A big THANK YOU to Jason, Ruben, Stryker, and all of those I was able to share this experience with!

I've been going to TSU as regularly as I possibly can since 2016. Every time I've gone I have learned something, had a great time, made some great friends. Jason and all the instructors are masters of their craft. This is the 2nd time I've done the 4 day hike. This new 'trail' was an amazing experience. It will test your physical grit, take you to places that are virtually pristine, and there's a lot to learn along the way from edible/medicinal plants, bushcrafting, and survival skills. All while through hiking some amazingly beautiful mountain canyons and valleys. Take any class you can and you won't regret it. You'll likely be planning your next trip before you've even left.

Highly recommend attending, you’ll be so glad you did! These guys are the real deal, sharing their passion and wealth of experience. I gained knowledge and skills from a variety of different instructors that are experts in their fields, lots of hands-on learning, cultivate self-reliance and team building with students from every walk of life, and just an overall fun time. The mountain scenery is absolutely beautiful too. Planning on taking more courses later this year.

Jason,I am so grateful to learn about The Survival University from a segment on Newsmax. Thank you for your professional guidance in assembling our family’s personal survival kits, and for referring me to work with Jess Caldwell. She is a knowledgeable instructor who brings her expertise, passion and respect for the outdoors to her clients. Her enthusiasm is infectious and inspired my family to embrace a weekend of wilderness and survival skills training with enthusiasm, confidence and fun! We look forward to attending TSU workshops in Colorado this summer. Thank you!Sincerely,NL, Greenwich CT

As someone with very limited experience outdoors (city living) I can tell you that Jason is a fantastic teacher. I attended the Survival Standard in April with a few other people who had an extensive history outdoors. Even though it was my first time using my ax and saw, I was able to keep up and learn a ton. The one thing that stood out in my mind is that if Jason saw me struggling with something, instead of just coming over and doing it for me he would show me how he would do it next to me and then allow me to do it with any tips or tricks if I was missing something... and that's what it is all about. Learning and proving to yourself that you are capable of doing things you've never done. The property was a great place to train and I'm excited to put what I was taught to use in the future. I'm looking forward to coming back for some more advanced courses soon.

I just got back from the 5 day Survival Standard class here in CO in April. I can't say enough good things about Jason and his program. The location is AWESOME, both for the views and the natural resources you have at your disposal, and Jason is an excellent teacher. My only complaint is that it all went by too fast! It can be a little bit like trying to drink from a fire hose, but Jason is always willing to answer questions and give feedback, while balancing his approach with being hands-off enough that you get to experience doing each task as independently as you want. I'm looking forward to taking more of his classes, and I HIGHLY recommend this program to everyone; the knowledge, skills, and confidence you'll gain is invaluable.

Amazing experience. Jason, Matt and the team are so knowledgeable, TRUE woodsmen that practice and live what they teach. In only 5 days, I learned how to treat water, trap animals, knife sharpen, start fires in a dozen ways, build a shelter, and more. The location is truly amazing. Can't wait to go back for more classes and fellowship.

I flew to Colorado from Texas for Jasons 5 day beginners class and wasn't disappointed. The class ciriculum is well thought out and flexible based on weather conditions. Jason is a chill, down to earth family guy.Things I appreciated:1.) Once we were given an assignment, I didn't feel like the instructor was hovering. He let us do our thing and realize our own mistakes as we progressed.2.) The training is only from 9am-5pm. After 5pm we had plenty of time to explore the area or work on improving our primitive shelters.3.) I asked many questions about local plants. Even though this information wasn't included in the training, Jason took the time to answer all my questions.Summary: If you're looking for a fun 5 day camping trip with friends, I highly recommend this one. Its worth the money.Tip: Even during the summer, there is a consistent cold breeze blowing through the mountains along with daily showers and sometimes light hail. Make sure to pack a water proof over pant layer and a gore-tex jacket with hood. Expect to shed clothing and redress throughout each day. Also, Jason offers to make meals for some of his classes. If that is an option for your class I recommend purchasing it. He's a good camp cook delivering larger portions than you can finish. Purchasing the meal option will lighten your hiking pack by 5 or more pounds.

I HIGHLY recommend this organization! I took the 3-day survival basics class with absolutely no knowledge. I came in nervous that everyone would be more able to learn the skills and I'd embarrass myself. I left feeling confident and excited! Jason is an incredible facilitator. We had a very diverse group - from state park rangers, ex-military, hunters, backpackers - and Jason was able to go fast for those who got the skills quickly and take his time with the people who needed more hands on. The class was paced in such a way that no one was left behind, but the the more advanced participants weren't bored. If you're feeling on the fence about whether or not you should sign up, DO IT!

I took the 5-day survival basics 101 class and loved it. Jason is an excellent instructor, giving the needed information and then providing plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning. I came into the class with very little experience but never felt out of place. I can't recommend this class, or any of the other classes, enough.

Jason and his team were wonderful instructors. I thought I knew the outdoors, but one week with them demonstrated how much I had yet to learn. From medicinal plants to tying knots to building shelter, I feel much more confident to survive in the wilderness. Moreover, the skills I learned aren't just for extreme survival, but practical situations on hike, backpacking or camping. I plan on coming back next year!

Jess and Jason were terrific guides. They not only introduced tangible survival skills, they also focused on how those skills translate into our everyday lives. I highly recommend them and TSU for groups interested in leadership development.

This class is the real deal! The pace is perfect , the instructors including Jason are super patient and insanely knowledgeable . They accommodate all of your needs which also includes helping with breaking into your locked truck if it happens(don’t ask). The scenery is beautiful! The camp is plentiful of resources. Did the winter class and the basic survival class and I already want to go back for more. You are going to make some great new friends I am sure of it. Do the class , you won’t regret it !!

Survival University is exactly what more of us need! Jason, Jess and Rob were some of the coolest most knowledgeable people to be able to take a course with! Went to the 2 day course and only wanted to stay longer. Definently going back for the 5 day and probably more. The property, scenery, good vibes, and knowledge is something I don't think I could get enough of.

First time doing anything survival related and it was incredibly useful. I took the 3 day basic course and wish I stayed for the 5 days. Highly recommend, especially doing hands-on training. I think it might be helpful to have a printout or email of what we learned after the course. Jason makes everyone feel comfortable regardless of experience you have in this. I came home telling my friends all I learned and would love to do another course!

The two day beginners survival course that I took was outstanding. Not only did I learn a lot, but I also gained confidence in knowing a bit more about what I need to do, or what I need to have, to survive in the woods. The instructors were so knowledgeable. They answered all of my questions... and I had a lot. They were patient. I never felt like I was an outdoor idiot. I felt like a person who was learning. I am looking forward to taking more courses in the future. I want to learn more and more about being safe in the outdoors, and I want to learn it from The Survival University.

Jason and Jess were amazing. I can’t believe how much I was able to learn over our 5 day class. I’ll be telling everyone I know about this experience and refer them to book their next adventure. I’ll be using the skills I learned for the rest of my life.

What a great experience. I took the 5 day, the mushroom and the plant classes. I went in thinking I knew some things, but came out knowing way more. The instructors were amazing. Alaska Matt was actually doing his 50 day class when I was there and is now part of the team. There were so many interesting things that Jason showed me. The class was informative and fun. People from all over the states were there so it was good to meet other people who wanted to learn the same skills. I highly recommend taking the 5 day survival class. There are so many options offered, I'm sure there is one just right for you.

This was everything! Just came home from my 5-day survivor course, and wished it could have been longer. Over the last several years, I found myself wanting to venture deeper into nature, whether through day hikes, summiting 14’ers, or solo backpacking trips to remote destinations. I’ve been fortunate enough to have all the tools and supplies I would need without having to worry about fire, shelter, food, etc. But, I wanted to be able to survive in the wilderness if faced with a situation, and be prepared. But I hadn’t ever considered a survival course! Deciding to sign up, and take this course with Jason as the instructor has been the best decision of my life! From the time I arrived to the time I reluctantly had to say goodbye, the experience was nothing short of amazing and life changing. The skills and knowledge I learned over the 5 days with Jason was far beyond what I expected. I can confidently say, I would crush the number one rule in survival, DO NOT DIE!Not only would I live, but I think I would thrive.Jason was so patient, compassionate and supportive, regardless of our skill levels or your backgrounds. He treated all of us with the utmost respect, and met each of us where we were. He never made us feel like we didn’t belong there, and was so much fun! He was engaged the entire time and even spent time with us after hours around the campfire. It seemed like it didn’t feel like a job to him, rather a passion. That passion combined with his expertise in wilderness survival made for a phenomenal experience. If you are at all interested in perfecting your survival skills or simply love being in nature, you shouldn’t hesitate to sign up for this course! Thank you, Jason, for an incredible 5 days, I’ll be back, I’ll knock on your trailer door!
