We wanted our dog Gibson to have a new buddy to play with, but weren't sure how to introduce a new friend. They went out of their way to make sure our dog would get along with a dog in there shelter. We have now had Lily AKA Kona for almost a year & she couldn't be a better fit! We are truly blessed to have her & love her more everyday! She makes our life complete!

Yesterday my life became complete when I was fortunate enough to be able to adopt two senior dogs from AVHS. I was amazed to learn how thoroughly vetted my new dogs were even down to blood panels and teeth. The staff were all very friendly, kind and informative.They gave me lots of info about the dogs and training tips, even gave me their familiar beds. A wonderful experience all around for myself and, I think, the dogs.

Be very careful if you are surrendering a giant dog there! It seems that the facility doesn’t have staff that knows how to handle them! Just because they are huge dogs doesn’t mean they don’t have very sensitive feelings, are scared easily! Slow and gentle wins with them! They are tender hearts and need kind gentle handling! You wouldn’t try and force a horse that is scared to do something without the fear of them striking out to protect them selves from perceived danger, why would u think u can manhandle a giant dog? Ego! How foolish! Training!!! Give Echo to somebody that knows how to treat him!!!!!

I had to surrender a great dog that had belonged to my sister and couldn't get along with my dogs. They were encouraging, helpful, and very knowledgeable and competent. I think Charli is in good hands. Thank you so much.

I’ve adopted three animals from the Ark Valley Humane Society, and fostered multiple animals as well. Staff has been respectful, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly each time.

Seems like no one is checking adoption forms online, as mine was ignored. The cat i wanted for a buddy for my senior cat got adopted apparently by a walkin a week after my adoption form was sent. So sad..

I've attended the summer Sunday Kitten Yoga classes which are great fun. They are hosted at AVHS South, in Salida, CO. The classes are taught by local yoga instructors who volunteer their time. I find it's a great way to experience different yoga teaching styles.I enjoyed the kittens' antics and interacted with many different kittens who scamper about during the class.I have adopted two cats and a dog from this shelter and my experiences with the Ark-Valley Humane Society has been excellent. I have used their Pet Cremation Services when several of my old pets have passed on. The staff was always respectful and sorry for my loss. I was treated with much kindness at those sad times.We are fortunate to have Ark-Valley Humane Society working in Chaffee County helping animals in need of homes.

Everyone was kind and the animals were kept in clean cages. The animals seemed to be doing good, not sick or overly distressed, and it was really fun to interact with them. They also had good information on each animal, such as what kind of interaction they liked and what their temperament was. Overall a very good experience.

If I could a no star rating I would. Long story short, I had a cat with a family member while I was finishing my college in a different state. They took that cat and one other for the fact that they were living with dogs that weren’t nice to them and she felt bad, when my girlfriend and I found out we offered to go pick them up and even called the shelter to have them hold them. When the family memeber found outwe we’re coming down the shelter gave them back to the lady who couldn’t take care of them in the first place. Why would you give an animal back when they gave them up in the first place? On top of that that same family me ever lied and said my girlfriend and I were unfit to take care of them and made it where we looked bad to the shelter.

Used to be a well run shelter, but now poorly run bearly any animals. (Their reply to this shorthanded so cannot care for more) They have been saying this for months! They lost most of their people including volunteers when management changed. Many of the regular workers and volunteers were unhappy and disappointed with new management's way of dealing with animals and running things.
