I just had to write this review after reading two others that are totally obnoxious and unfair. If you want lousy, impersonal service and high prices then shop at PetSmart or one of the other "chains" but if you want personal service, friendly staff and better prices than the chains then shop at Tom-Cat. I have been shopping there for years and have always been happy with their prices and the friendliness of the staff. I have always found the shop to be clean and the animals well-tended. People who make other claims are just liars.This is a forum that should be used to give honest assessments of a business so consumers can make informed choices. This is not a forum for obnoxious remarks or lies. Google needs to be more mindful of cruel and untrue reviews and REMOVE THEM from public display.

I like this store. It is nearby, has everything I need and the staff are super helpful. I recommend it to friends. They have bird millet there I can only get there for inexpensive because its home-made. Also they take care to provide pure meat dog food you cant get at Petco. Also they are very helpful if you have a question. Its also fun because they have a bird who talks. Sunland has its own ethnic. It is the home ranches and horse properties. It is where Patrick Swazy lived and also Monk from the TV show. Deal with it because it is a unique culture. I would recommend the store play on these special unique qualities instead of trying to be like Petco when they are not. If you want sterile environment go to petco. Also I recommend they get more things that you cant get other places and for unique special prices. If you want to be real go to the Tom Cat. Thats my thoughts on the subject. Also, please support our local businesses. They are our economy. I recommend this store go into things that petco can never provide like unique things such as home made biscuits for dogs, special groomers. The groomers and people who deal with animals out here should be the ones to make Sunland/Shadow Hills more special than anywhere in Los Angeles. It is the only place in L.A. you can go where there are animals everywhere. Once I found a lost bird there and the lady who works there took the time to help the bird and make sure it was safe. That would not have happened at Petco. This is a great place and I am kind of angry that anyone would say bad about it.

This has got to be one of the filthiest pet and feed stores I've every been in. I do small animal rehab & rescue in Burbank and frequent the thrift shop next door for towels and blankets for my critters. I rescued one of my sweet male rats from there almost 1 year ago now. He was in a cage right up front not much bigger than he was, totally feral, never having been picked up or loved his whole life. He was around 2 years old and had been used for breeding only, and now they were trying to sell him for food. I know this because when I told them I'd take him someone else came in and bought the other smaller male in the cage next to him for a food rat (I asked..). In their back room next to the birds is where they keep (and won't show you) the rest of their breeding rats. Had I not asked if they had any more to sell like my big boy "reggie" I would never have known they were back there. Each female I saw back there was in a cage (again) not much bigger than she was with multiple litters of pups in other cages...all filthy and no water or variety of nutritional food for her or babies. All of their birds were pretty much in the same shape....very sad! Someone from the ASPCA REALLY NEEDS TO DO SPOT CHECKS ON A REGULAR BASIS AT THIS STORE! Thank GOD I got my boy, and one other girl from the back out of there! (after I had my rats in their to go boxes I gave the owner my 2 cents worth on her horrid store!) VERY SAD! People owning stores like this should ONLY be allowed to sell product....NOT ANIMALS!

Don't listen to the negative reviews on this store. I've been going to this store for years with only good experiences there. The selection of high quality pet foods (and I'm not talking about kibble with so much corn it's like feeding your dog tortilla chips) is good and the staff is always really great when I go in there. Always incredibly helpful!!

I honestly HATE this store I called the animal cops on them because their birds are right underneath the air conditioner, and they are all sick. They no attention WHATSOEVER and that makes really sad. These things are about to die, they need help! People please adopt them. I also saw them rubbing off the expiration date of a food bag for pets, and it was over expired. I bought it to see what it looked like, and it was full of worms and bugs. DISGUSTING I am going to call all pet societies until they do an inspection. All of these pets NEED to be adopted RIGHT AWAY!!!! They are poor in health and get NO attention. I HATE THIS PET STORE!!!! Get ready to be shut down. The workers are not greeting and were feeding a dog PIG EARS, which by the way CAN KILL DOGS!!!! I do not like it. Everyone call the spca and the LA animal services!!!!!!!!!!! These pets need help!!!!!!!

Closed. This place was great. Lots of different choices. All different price levels. They care and know enough to help you find what you really need and want.
