I met the new vet and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Rainey was amazing. She and the vet tech spent a long time examining Daisy and answering all my questions. This office has always been great about showing you the cost of each procedure and recommended medications. I have been bringing my dogs to this office for years and really appreciate that they never gave you the guilt trip if you don't want to have a test or procedure. Dr. Shim was great when my older dog was dying. He told me what tests were necessary and what ones were just recommended. I feel so lucky to have a vet I can trust.

My 5 years old dog suddenly experienced IVDD (degenerative disc disease) about 4 months ago and we had to go to different animal hospital that is closer to my house. We went there and they told me to consider euthanasia because there is no hope for my dog anymore. Also, they prescribed medication but it was just painkiller. Then, we made appointment with Dr. Shim (which is my dog's usual physician) and with his treatment, my dog can now walk normally!! The surgery was too expensive option for me but Dr. Shim's medication treatment was successful. My dog is slowly getting better and now at this moment, she can walk, run, and walk up the stairs. I would give 10 stars to Dr. Shim and definitely RECOMMEND him!

Great place, to take you pet. Staff is great. The only thing is that appointments are hard to get if there is an emergency or need to bring in your pet right away. They are really busy.

We rescued our beloved Chunks from the streets and since then Dr Shim has been taking good care of him, he recommended to run some tests and we found out he is FVI positive. Thanks to Dr. Shim we can provide Chunks a good quality of life. Iā€™ll recommend Alton Pet Clinic to everyone.

I was recommended this vet by a good friend of mine for my two cats. Initially I had inquired on a Friday and they had offered me the following Monday, but due to my schedule I opted to wait a month for their next Saturday appt. This was for my cat who was wheezing/coughing, which they let me know to monitor for any changes and to see the emergency vet if it got worse. I ended up taking both of my cats in for a regular exam ($53) and received their yearly vaccinations (~$100). I appreciate them allowing me in the exam room with my pets and they were up front with all costs and didn't try to upsell me on any services. There was no wait time for my appointment and all services were complete for two cats within 30 minutes.

Dr. Shim is the best of the best! I have a hard time putting my trust within a veterinarian but Dr. Shim goes above and beyond. My cat was in the ER and the next day they took her in immediately. No matter how busy they were throughout the week they continued to see her to give her treatment and tests. Dr. Shim actually cares about the animals that he treats. My cat had high levels of toxicity in her body and a blood infection, I was extremely scared but they did their best no matter the circumstances. He is very knowledgeable and even though we didnā€™t know her test results rite away he suspected what kind of treatment she needed and Iā€™m so happy that he did because it couldnā€™t have waited. I ask a lot of questions and he is always patient with me and answers them thoroughly. He even called on his day off to see if I had any more questions and just to check up on her. Thank you Dr. Shim and your team for taking good care of my furry family, we couldnā€™t be more grateful for you all!

Dr.Shim and his staff are amazing ! They take their time to hear your concerns and it doesn't feel like they are trying to nickel and dime you for unnecessary procedures. Unlike other places I've been to - looking at you Banfield ! They are incredibly sweet and know how much our pets means to us which is very refreshing to experience when your little one is sick. I brought my puppy Zelda over for some tummy troubles and they took care of her right away. Got her some meds and Hills variety of dog food. It was like magic, she was back to her usual self ! So happy to found this place - way to go Dr.Shim and staff, thank you for all that you do!

Bad attitude from start to finish, kinda weird. I almost didnā€™t believe my GF till I tried just getting the last visit paperwork. My little guy got a cyst from his last visit and all my new vet wants to know is what did they do to him :|Oh and they donā€™t have internet and they hate their lives because of it. Canā€™t email you anything

I found Alton Main Animal Hospital through their excellent reviews online. Reviews that stood out to me in particular were patients that drove long distances out of loyalty to their favorite vet, Dr. Shim, and patients that noted the hospital's care and warmth.Unfortunately, our beloved animal companion was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of skin cancer. We hadn't known that yet and were instead alarmed by a bleeding growth on his abdomen and quickly searched for a local vet. Dr. Shim and his team were able to fit us in quickly after they learned details. During our visits, Dr. Shim communicated information practically and straightforward, but with care. A lot of vets I've visited unfortunately have lost that kind side.To be honest, the first couple times I visited, there were many other patients and they were going through everyone rather efficiently. However, that efficiency luckily does not translate into poor results but rather some of the best work I've seen. Surgery went smoothly, and when we returned a couple weeks later to remove the stitches, you could barely tell where it was.We have since gone to a local oncology specialist since Alton does not yet provide chemo or radiation but were shocked with the specialist's lack of empathy and also lack of straightforward information about the cancer. Obviously, we want the best care for our pet, so if both do similar work with one hospital showing more compassion, I will lean toward that one.Outside of our scheduled visits, Dr. Shim has also been patient in guiding me through this new process on the phone. He makes the time to answer all my questions and ease me through the anxiety of what could be a much more difficult process. I also must make note that this is one of the most affordable vets I've been to, especially when it comes to surgery. Thank you SO SO much Dr. Shim and team! From front desk to those unseen in the back, you all do such wonderful work and should be proud of the clinic you run.

The Dr. Is amazing, he is very effective, nice, and shows that he truly loves and cares for your pet. I always take my dog with this vet. My chihuahua is 3lbs and 7 years old, she had tumors on her belly and the Dr. put her down for surgery and thankfully everything went amazing. Their staff members are very nice and efficient.

Dr. Shim and the other vets are great. The vets explain everything very thoroughly but there are a few concerns after a few visits here. The workers there donā€™t seem to communicate with you or each other well. They bring your pet into another room to do the examinations and vaccines. We got our dog microchipped and got all the paper work for it and certificate but at the next appointment the tech gave us a ā€˜SPAYED/NEUTEREDā€™ certificate. She handed it to usā€¦ and I told her we never scheduled to have that done for her. She looked at us confused and took the paperwork and immediately threw it away and said ā€œohh I meant to print out the microchip paperworkā€ (which we already got during our last visit).Another tech asked us to weigh our puppy. We told her 10.2lbs. She put down 10.6 lbsā€¦We asked the tech for flea medication and wanted the same medication our pup had last time. Instead of asking us if it was okay to switch to a different one she proceeded to switch to a different one. And she said they didnā€™t have the previous one in stock. Again, no communication here. The tech asked us if we paid for the full puppy package already.. we told her we paid in full the first visit. (We asked them to itemize certain things for insurance purposes).. again, there seems to be confusion here.We see dogs puke and have accidents in the office they just simply wipe it up with a paper towel. No additional cleaning or sprays/cleaning materials used which is also concerning. Our pup got the rabies vaccine. As we were walking out and getting in our car to go home the tech comes out to tell us side effects like diarrhea and allergic reactions our pup might have and that they close at 6 (1 hour left) Shouldnā€™t she tell us before giving the vaccines? Or during our previous visit so we could have booked an earlier appointment. Again, poor communication here.

Dr. Shim is the BEST!! He was kind and helpful and he did a wonderful job! My cat has a made miraculous recovery and Iā€™m so thankful for Alton Main Vet! They are affordable too! I was able to bring my cat in right away without an appointment and during an emergency, Dr. Shim handled it so well. He even called in the morning to let me know my catā€™s bloodwork results. I canā€™t thank him enough. My cat is so happy now! This vet is better than any vet Iā€™ve gone to!!

We heard great things about this hospital and I actually read the yelp reviews before bringing our dog here. We're SO grateful and happy we came here. The reviews couldn't be more on point. Dr. Shim was very caring and attentive to our old senior pup. What we appreciated the most was that he cared for our dog as if it was his own and genuinely was concerned about his health. He is also very very informative, attentive, and knew all the right protocols caring for our dog. You can tell the staff here love animals and sincerely care. Our dog is still currently undergoing treatments after getting a lot of tests done. He received a blood test, X-ray, ultrasound and we received the results all less than 2 hours!! Yeah you read that right. The previous vet we took him to told us our dog's blood test results would come in within 2 weeks even though our dog lost another 5 pounds that past week... I understand normally it would take a couple of days but Dr. Shim was kind enough to make this a priority to get to the bottom of why our dog's condition was deteriorating so fast. But what we appreciated the most was that Dr. Shim even took the time to call us and check in on our dog and make sure he's doing okay. Prices are also very reasonable compared to other vets I've taken pets to in the past. As a comparison, I would highly recommend this hospital, especially Dr. Shim, over VCA hospitals. Staff is also very friendly and careful with all pets. No wonder they are always busy! We got lucky and were able to book a canceled appointment the day before. But they always make it a priority to get your pet in asap. Bring your pets here, I promise the drive and visit is worth it. Thank you so much Dr. Shim and Team, we will only come here from now on!!Parking: There is an open lot and lots of spaces to park in.

Dr. Shim is very well trained veterinarian and a superb human being. We came from another vet who wasn't giving us much hope and Dr. Shim immediately prescribed a course of treatment that greatly improved our dog's situation. Dr. Shim is also very accessible and is quick to provide a personal response to our needs. We highly recommend him.

I recently visited Alton Main A.H. for my dog Cooper's eye issue, which I suspected was infected. Cooper also had enlarged lymph nodes behind his jaw bone and swelling under his chin. After finishing the course of eye medication, I saw only slight improvement in Cooper's eye, of which I reported to Dr. Shim. I returned a couple of weeks later for a scheduled surgery to remove a small cyst on his chest and a couple of other minor growths. When I came to pick up Cooper at the end of the day, I was told 2 meds were being prescribed to Cooper for his post-surgery recovery: an antibiotic (2 bottles - one was 500 mg; the other was 250 mg. Dr. Shim opted for 750 mg to also make sure his possible eye infection would improve); and the other med was Rimadyl, which the front desk person told me was "for pain." I was never scheduled for an appt to return 2 weeks later to have the stitches removed and for a post-surgery check-up!!! I had to call to complain about it, and only then did I get scheduled. (The front desk told me: "we forgot to schedule you for a check up b'cuz we are so busy" - which is what they always tell me!!) When I did arrive, Dr. Shim noted one lymph node appeared to be slightly smaller in size from my prior visit 2 weeks earlier; the other lymph node slightly larger. Dr. Shim asked if I was giving both med's to Cooper. I told him I only gave 1 Rimadyl pill to Cooper b'cuz he didn't seem to be in "pain". Note: I later was told by the front desk that the Rimadyl was also an anti-inflammatory, which made me furious and was a *serious* error on their part (for neglecting to give me the proper info about the medication.) As soon as I resumed the Rimadyl medication, Cooper's swelling under his chin subsided, but the lymph nodes behind his jaw bone remained the same size. I suspected lymphoma, common in (older) Boxers, b'cuz of what I read online and the symptoms Cooper was having and the fact the meds were not reducing the size of the lymphomas. I even brought in my own online research w/ notes that I typed up and discussed w/ Dr. Shim, but he ended up keeping my notes! (Maybe he thought he could learn something from them?) Not getting anywhere w/ Dr. Shim and not seeing improvement in Cooper, I decided to get a 2nd opinion from Greek & Associates (Dr. Greek re-named his practice to "Greek & Associates Veterinary Hospital" and moved to a new location in Yorba Linda 12 yrs ago). On my first visit, I explain Cooper's recent history and symptoms, and the doctor suspects lymphoma right away. They noticed enlarged nodes on the side of his neck, causing his larynx to be pinched, which was causing Cooper to have difficulty breathing (NEVER discussed by Dr. Shim). Greek & Associates prescribed an appetite stimulant (NEVER mentioned as an option by Dr. Shim). Greek & Associates then suggested a biopsy to confirm lymphoma and learn best treatment options (NEVER mentioned as an option by Dr. Shim). When I dropped off Cooper 1 week later for his biopsy, they took a precautionary chest x-ray first (NEVER discussed by Dr. Shim), only to learn of an area of concern that showed up as a small "white area", which should've been a "black area" on the x-ray. 3 of their doctors looked at the x-ray, and all agree it most likely is cancer, and told me the biopsy was not necessary, and instead, prescribed Prednisone, that will shrink the nodes and give Cooper "more time" (NEVER mentioned as an option by Dr. Shim). The appetite stimulant pills and the Prednisone is only $1/pill at Greek & Associates (much less than Alton-Main's prices, as the front desk had told me, "the cost of our medications have really gone up in price!" But ALL of their prices have gone up, and Greek & Associates told me their prices have NOT gone up!). Save yourself money and headaches, and go elsewhere, b'cuz this place is too busy to care for your pet properly!) I have moved on from Alton-Main and officially am "back home" w/ Greek & Associates in Yorba Linda and am very pleased w/ their professionalism, knowledge, and pricing!

I absolutely Love Dr. Shim. I have been bringing my pet here for more than 10 years. He takes the time to make my dog comfortable first! Wow! Dr. Shim always takes the time to explain everything clearly and addresses any questions and issues you may have. He's very honest and never adds on unnecessary fees or false advises on anything to make extra bucks as some other vets do. On the contrary, he will actually suggest opting out on anything that's not needed to be done. I've came here for multiple reasons for my dog, some including, check ups, shots, blood work, x-rays, etc...Price- Very fair compare to others in the area.Staff - Very friendly and well informed.Although they take walk-ins, I would suggest to make an appt as the wait can be long depending on the time/day.

I want to thank Dr. Shim and his staff for being so compassionate and caring when we had to put our Sonny down. Their prices were fair, unlike other vets who want to make so much money off your pain. They lit a candle while we were there honoring our dog and they sent us a card a few days later expressing their condolences. Thank you! Your team created somewhat of a positive memory in spite of the circumstances.
