Very nice facility. Well designed, clean, and well maintained. Multiple dorms for dogs and cats. Some dog kennels have partial outdoor space, which I thought was very good for the dogs. The facility also has a good indoor space to play with dogs. Lots of kittens/cats, even rabbits. The facility also has a room where they treat and perform surgery if needed. Outside is a barn with goats, horses, and chickens. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. The facility offers fostering of pets too.

My wife and I have been looking for a small puppy or young dog. We looked at a few different kennels on the internet, hoping to see a dog that we'd like to meet in person. We saw 3 possibilities at the County of Santa Clara Animal Shelter. We went to the shelter with the information from their website. 2 of the 3 dogs were taken. The one left was a 12 week old puppy. This puppy is a Terrier mix, but looks like a purebred Terrier. He's black with a few little dashes of white in just the right places. He looked great! We adopted him in about an hour. He has all the shots required at 12 weeks. He'll require a couple of other shots at appropriate times. The woman who helped us was very nice and professional. We had a great experience there. I recommend going with information regarding your pet choices from their website. It made everything go very smoothly. They also had cats there too. The facility was very nice and clean. I highly recommend this location. If I'm ever looking for another dog or cat, I will definitely try here first!

This place is awesome! The staff is great! We fostered a kitten for a month and we fall in love with him. Unfortunately, we travel often so we drop him back to the shelter and the staff was nice and understanding when I kept asking questions about how the kitten would be handle. They even post my bio for the cat and his picture.Great staff and great service! ❤️❤️❤️

During the past few months, I have not taken care of five girls of tan German shepherd pups because I have had in my own small home is not enough space for them so until they turn two months old, then I take them to the shelter and all of them have been adopted before Christmas day, so I am very sorry if you think I am neglecting them. Honestly, I am missing them so much! I wonder how are they doing, and how are they growing so fast! I really have to thank this wonderful staffing team that is helping me out in such a wonderful way.

The new Shelter is so nice. Since the outpouring of requests for adoptions, fostering and volunteers it appears to be helping. This is just an observation. Please foster & adopt if you can commit to giving one or of these shelter animals a furever (forever) home. I'd love to see a Shelter Sign on Monterey Road.

Went to go look at one of the dogs we saw online and were told we could see him when we got there and then when we asked the woman she asked us if we had another dog at home and we said yes. All she said was he won’t be a good fit and went back to typing. She said it a very rude tone and didn’t even acknowledge us as people. I totally understand if he isn’t a good fit because he’s aggressive and we have a dog but the way she said it was super rude. We are human beings with feelings and will definitely never be back. I’ve never been spoken to like this in my life by employee! Totally disgusting behavior

Typical county employees, on 12-18-23 11:50am three employees standing around doing nothing, in the front lobby while 5 people wait outside. I was one of them with about 100 lbs of doog food to donate. One 50 pound bag I dropped into the donation bins but the other 50 pounds were in containers. I use the containers to store my pet food in. I wanted to donate the food but not the containers. I still use the containers for my pet's food. But because noone had the courtesy to ask why 5 people were standing outside the County Animal Shelter, all 5 people were over 50 years of age. The employees were to busy talking among themselves to show a little courtesy. I took the 50 lbs of food and went elsewhere. The food was Diamond, Wildology and Pro Plan. Ridiculously sad.

Would give -100000 stars if I only could. The manager is a thief. AVOID at any cost.Back in late August I met with the foster family of one of the animals from this shelter that I was interested in adopting. I filled out the adoption paperwork, paid the adoption fee, and was told by the family to wait for the shelter to contact me.A few days passed and I didn’t receive any calls from the shelter, the foster family started “ghosting” me and leaving me on read. I had to call the shelter myself to confirm that the adoption process was successful and the dog would be in my care from then on. Only the dog was still staying with the foster family, who were still not responding to any of my messages or calls. The next day I decided to call the shelter again, to solve the problem once and for all. They immediately redirected the call to their manager, Lorance Gomez, stating that he wanted to talk to me about something; well, it turned out, that I was either lied to, or there was some sort of a problem with their system (they did NOT explain what the reason for all this was), and after all, I wouldn’t be able to adopt the dog. From the moment Lorance and I started talking, he was very disrespectful and gave me a lot of attitude for completely no reason at all. He didn’t care to explain to me WHY they’ve changed their mind about letting me adopt the dog, only giving me a bunch of stupid reasons, i.e. that my apartment was too small for me to have a large dog (he was informed by me numerous times, that my apartment is both animal friendly and 1000+ ft sq), that I was not active enough to care for a large dog (he was also informed by me that I work remotely, and that I lead a very active lifestyle, walk 20+ miles a day, run marathons, etc.). He also stated that because I’m a young woman (23 this year), I wouldn’t be able to care for a German Shepherd—even though he knew very well that I’ve had GSDs my whole life, and never had any problems whatsoever. That may not have been his intention, but to me, this “argument” sounded misogynistic, and I felt very offended by it. I also experienced a form of racism, hearing snarky comments about my accent and being treated like a “slow” person the moment Lorance found out I was Polish.Because of Lorance’s incompetence and ignorance, I lost $3000 that I paid for training sessions for the dog I was told I had adopted. The fee was non refundable. I was also promised a refund of the adoption fee, which was $110, within a week. I was even supposed to get a call from them, confirming that they refunded me the money…. Well, it has been almost SIX MONTHS now, and I still haven’t received my refund. I’ve tried calling and messaging Lorance numerous times and to no avail. I’m pretty sure he blocked my number. It’s completely unacceptable to not only lead someone on, lie to them, treat them like trash because of their nationality, cost them $3000, and then, on top of that STEAL from them. I won’t be able to get the $3000 back, but I still want my refund for the adoption fee, as I HAVE NOT adopted a pet, and I’m pretty sure the money went straight to Lorance’s pocket, and I’m NOT okay with any money going to this person.I’m not sure if I was treated this way because of my nationality, and Lorance’s ignorance and complete lack of respect for others, or because of the shelter’s general lack of competence, but, at the end of the day, I was still treated badly, and it’s unacceptable, no matter the reason. If you’re thinking of adopting a pet from this shelter, please be careful, and definitely don’t go and talk to their manager, Lorance. The rest of the us staff is really nice and friendly, but please, AVOID THE MANAGER. Especially when you’re not American, and god forbid, have an accent.

Took my husband here while visiting my hometown. We wanted to ask around and see what an animal shelter in America looked like since we also volunteer where we live by helping strays - particularly stray cats. We were so impressed with the shelter. They definitely designed the room to give cats an emotionally healthy environment. I also really love how they encouraged treat tossing positive conditioning with their dogs. Definitely impressed with this shelter. If we were to move back to California, we would definitely come back to adopt from this place

I volunteer here and I’m grateful for the facility. It’s sad when animals get abandoned but it’s nice there’s a place that could take care of them until the next adoption.

It's such a nice upgrade compared to what it was before. Unfortunately, the staff could use a remodel. Front desk did not have the best customer service. They give off very judgemental vibes, which is very off putting. If they're really serious about helping animals get adopted, they should really focus on their presentation and create a welcoming environment. Other than that, the building is beautifully made and easy to get to.

My sister adopted a beautiful kitten through their service. The foster family was very nice and helpful. We went to the shelter to finish paper work and the staff was polite and made sure everything was right.

Went last Saturday, they had an event where all adoption fees were waived, which was SO awesome because my son (18 yrs) wanted a baby all his own SO BADLY. We live with my mom, and she has two rescue cats, one of which I rescued and brought to her a little over 2 years ago, and one that she's had for 11 or 12 years. I've also got a rescue, saved him at 4 weeks old from a homeless guy who knew NOTHING about kittens and very nearly killed him! Anyway, we hadn't been at the shelter 10 minutes when my son found the kitten that was meant for him! Peanut is just sweet and delightful, and such an absolutely perfect complement to our family! We could not possibly love her more!! Thank you SO MUCH!!

I’ve been fostering many times here and have started recognizing the people who work and volunteer. There are many workers/volunteers who are always positive and give you excellent feedback on what to do. But there are definitely some who need better people skills when it comes to talking to potential adopters and people who foster. No matter how hard one tries to be nice with no attitude whatsoever given to them, you get a stink eye or a very bad attitude from them. I was dropping off some fosters and was told to “just leave” when doing so with the nastiest tone. I’ve had a rough day as was with the kittens starting to going limp as they were getting into a heat stroke due to no ac in the car, and the attitude/lack of urgency for the panting kittens was just sad. I know this review won’t do much in this terms of trying to fix the problem but this attitude (not the first incident) only comes from two employees there. One being a blonde older woman and another being a short one with curly hair. Other than that, the shelter itself takes good care of the animals with many volunteers helping out with the dogs and kittens. There are many workers there who do show compassion for both the people and the animals there. I know it may start to feel like they’re just numbers now and may seem like a hassle to some but at the end of the day the bottle babies all deserve the same proper care and love too.

They have a very caring staff who really love their animals and do all the can with what little resource they have. When I visited there were many dogs who were either old, injured, so they took in alot of dogs who were challenged adoption wise. I was so impressed and taken aback by the guy who went out there to search for lost animals. He showed the dogs so much love and the dogs were overjoyed when he entered the room from his search work outside. This shelter could really use & benefit from financial help.

Our furr-pup was taken in by the CHP (VERY UNPROFESSIONALLY) Other hand-5 STARS isn't enough!! to the San Martin Shelter and their staff Halloween 2021. Obviously in tears by now my voice very horse stuttering frantically searching I didn't know how to ask if they had my boy and how was he? Two rings and a very sweet kind and gentle voice asked 1 question. I said Cane Corso and held my breath. Immediately she understood my fear & responded "he's here he's safe & he misses his mommy" I bald!! Then she said "he's huge and he's handsome". Now I'm baling with a smile!!To everyone an animal shelter is the LAST place they hope to find their fur-baby. The San Martin Shelter is the exception this place is exceptionally clean and the staff is exceptionally carrying it's obvious they love pets and understand your fears. These are good people. Thank you so much for taking care of my boy. And yup he probably was a bit naughty showing off his pearly whites. Although he may have had plenty of competition I'm sure he's left a lasting impression with the ladies. So thank you everyone at the Santa Clara County Animal Shelter in San Martine ❤PS...I will be back soon with a donation of lots & lots of clean towels.

I want to adopt a stray cat, The animal shelter is going to help me do this. The young cat chose my house, yes I do feed it, but then who wouldn't. It is taken to me, but it is on the wild side, and I'm not able to keep it unless number 1, it calms down, and number two, it gets spayed. It isn't my house. This is very exciting because I've never had a cat before.
