I recently came by here to pick out a baby parakeet. I had been communicating with Ellen beforehand to know when there would be babies available for purchase and came in that weekend after I was told the news. She was extremely kind and was very prompt with her service, even though it was a little busy at the time I came in. I picked out a small blue and black baby and got to enjoy handling it before I decided to purchase it. I will be returning to visit the baby for the next several weeks until it is old enough for me to take home; I will update when I am able to take it home!They also have a good selection of other birds available for purchase, and it is quite lively in the store! I highly recommend them if you are looking for a new bird companion. They also have a large selection of pet supplies! Definitely check them out if you can.UPDATE: I've now had my bird for 2 weeks, and it has adjusted wonderfully to it's new home. It's healthy, eating well, and generally very happy. The day I picked it up, they told me to come back in a week to do a reweigh to make sure it's healthy. And thankfully, it is!Again, I highly recommend them! The price for a bird is what it is due to the care and love that goes into raising these birds, and you can truly see that pay off.

Honestly, I had a good customer experience.Two years ago, one of my lovebirds died and I was calling every pet shop in the city, asking if they had any lovebirds. I was looking for a new friend for my Mochi. None of the shops had any, apparently they don’t like carrying them cos they’re vicious! But my mochi is a sweetheart!. When I called the animal company, they said they have something similar and apartment friendly. They mentioned a green cheek pineapple conure. So I stopped by and took a look. They seemed very sweet, very quiet. I felt it would be a good homie for Mochi, so I got one. And getting a conure was probably one of the greatest things ever. They’re so sweet and affectionate. The owner of the store, is super nice, she was super helpful and knowledgeable. She just knew what would work for me. The rest of the staff are great too.

Superbly pleasant staff with the knowledge to back it! This store is well lit and cleaned head to toe with minimal dust which is amazing for a store with birds. The birds are given a varied diet and are clearly loved and cared for. Of you are looking for advice, birds, and just to bulk up on some treats and toy I would recommend this lovely, locally owned pet store to anyone in the area.

The Animal Company is an exceptional exotic bird shop! Their wide selection of colorful and healthy birds is truly impressive. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about these magnificent creatures. The shop is clean and well-maintained, providing a comfortable environment for both the birds and customers. A must-visit for any bird enthusiast!

I just finished reading other reviews of people that had a chance to pick their birds out and have time to play with the birds before deciding to purchase them. That is not the way it happened with me. Granted I was wishy-washy about whether I should take the birds on at all to begin with and missed a few appointments. But the date came for me to pick up the birds and they promptly went upstairs (they were busy) and brought two birds down in a box and said here you go. I had never seen the birds before I had zero time to watch their behavior. I should have said something but I think I was more in shock than anything else. These birds were not tamed and showed no signs of being hand-fed. I'm still trying to work with them. Money is not the issue, the bird's happiness is but still $170. plus the cost of accessories and food is a bit in my world. Hold firm on what they say concerning play dates, etc. before purchase.

I called around San Francisco to see about pricing out a baby hand-fed cockatiel. Everywhere I called recommended this place for amazing selection, knowledge and hand-fed baby birds! We went there and the staff is so kind and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend them ♥ We bought two cockatiels from them!

Ellen deserves more than a 5 star review for being an incredibly kind and generous person while also being an awesome business owner with a ton of knowledge on pet parrots.I came to the animal company because I was interested in purchasing a hand fed English budgie. Ellen was still hand feeding the baby bird I picked out, so I came by every weekend to visit my bird while she was still being hand fed. Ellen and the whole team were so nice during these visits! I also asked for update videos and pictures as my baby bird’s feathers came in, and Ellen was more than happy to text them to me.I ended up taking my bird home, and she is an absolute sweetheart! No taming was needed and she loved humans from the beginning.My parakeet started showing symptoms of being a little sick about a month after I took her home, and long story short I got taken advantage of by several avian vets in the Bay Area with vet bills almost totaling $1,000. I thankfully called Ellen while I was at my second vet appointment, and she personally went out of her way to help me. She had her personal vet look over the test results, and ended up saving me hundreds of dollars in extra tests that the vet wanted to perform. Turns out my bird was healthy, just a little dehydrated.It’s safe to say that the Animal Company has a new customer for life and I will be recommending all of my fellow bird lovers to this pet shop.

First time in the store and I am so pleased we drove from the east bay to visit today. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the store, the calm and excellent customer service and the inventory of exotic birds. The prices were very competitive and the owner was patient and provided plenty of instruction. We were shopping for a baby cockatiel and fell in love with and bought a baby Sun Conure. We were allowed to sit and hold the bird to learn its temperament. We left informed and more knowledgeable. We will bring home our little guy in about 5 weeks. My daughter will be allowed to visit him until we can bring him home!

Bought two of my three birds. I love when the employees make my conures diet. Best food in SF. Although we were not told why we needed to weigh our young bird in 3 weeks come back. They moved. Grumpy at times but overall the employees are knowledgeable and helped me with my first bird. Toys and setting up the cage. We buy toys that are hard to get too

A man with longer hair was extremely rude. I’ll follow up with an update and details.If someone would have asked me until yesterday, what do I think of The Animal Company, the answer would have been equivalent to 5 stars. Moreover, the employees mostly females with whom I was in contact while visiting the store were always very nice and helpful.However, after yesterday's event, my foot will not cross over at this store any more. A year ago I purchased a bird at this store. Ever since then, I have been going back to buy food, toys, and other necessary products for my Blue Front Amazon. Recently I started traveling for work, and naturally I started taking my bird to this place for boarding while I was on work trips (3 times total I have left my bird there in the past several weeks). Yesterday when I went to pick up the bird, 3 employees who were there were busy with other customers or other things, and I was waiting for someone to help me. A male employee with longer hair, at some point offered help and I asked if I can pick up the bird. Nevertheless, phone rang and he started talking on the phone, so I waited again. When I saw that other employee, who is a husband of the lady who is an owner of the store, was free I asked him if he can help me. At that moment, a male employee who initially offered help, abruptly said, "I will help. You already asked me." I did not respond anything to that. Then the husband of the owner asked me something, which I did not hear, until the man with a longer hair answered saying: "Everyone is always in hurry." After that comment, he just went and unlocked my bird's cage and that was all his whole help. When I picked up a bird, I went to him and told him that he was very rude, after which he went off on me with insults one after the other. Even when I tried to tell the owner what just happened, he continued with his tired. I have never experienced customer service like this. For things to get even worse, after I left the place I called the store and wanted to talk with the lady who is the owner of the store but her husband answered the phone and then he told me how I always come to the store in hurry and I pressure the employees to hurry up, how because of that pressure they can make mistakes, maybe overcharge me, etc. None of these is in fact true. Although I was in hurry couple of times when I was dropping off the bird: once I asked if I can come back later when I have more time to fill out the paperwork, which they said was OK, and second time, I dropped off the bird and I called the store while on my way to the airport to confirm the details and info - all of which they already had. In other words, no one was pressured anyone. Regardless mistakes and overcharging - as far as I am concerned, I never had any of those problems, although once one of the employees did give me wrong information and only -- information -- on pricing and that was over the phone so no one was charged more or less because of that.I know that every story has two sides, nevertheless this was my experience, and as far as I know, this is how it happened. As I said at the beginning, until yesterday's event I could say only nice things about this place. Even if I pressured anyone there, there is a proper way that to be brought to my attention. Insults, rudeness, or misrepresentation and twisting the facts, whether that be by a long hair man or husband of the owner, are definitely not the way, and because of that this is still not over. I did not go to the store to be yelled at or anyone to be rude to me because of his twisted perception of things. I've said here enough. Sapienti sat.Another update: speaking of professionalism, first time when I left the bird in the store, I asked if her nails could be fixed. After 4 days, when I came back to pick up the bird, they did not do her nails, but they said, we can do it now if you can wait, which I declined saying, "we can do that some other time when I bring her again." I did not make a big deal, did not say anything, etc.

I came here from the central valley to purchase a green cheek conure from this place. I had looked at other places and even looked to private breeders. I settled with The Animal Company because they had reasonably priced birds with good variety and a friendly customer service policy. Their current location is crowded, but the birds looked healthy and they are also in the process of moving to a different location with more space available. I am happy with my purchase and would recommend putting them on your list of places to look if you are interested in getting a bird.

I visited The Animal Company about a month ago not knowing exactly what kind of bird I wanted to buy or whether I was interested in buying a bird at all. The employees were so incredibly friendly and knowledgeable in helping me make my decisions that I ended up putting a deposit down for a cockatiel who had just recently been born. Because my bird was too young to leave the store, I ended up visiting it once or twice a week to sit and play with it in order to get it accustomed to me as its owner. The employees coached me during each visit about the things I would need to know to care for the bird, so by the time we were ready to take it home I felt more than adequately prepared.All in all, everyone at the store was extremely kind, approachable, and helpful throughout the whole process. I have every intention of returning to this store for any needs that may arise in the future.

We loved this place! They were courteous and friendly and so patient with all of the questions my kids and I asked. I had been searching for just the right companion bird for quite some time. After discussing with me what I was looking for in a bird, she picked out just the perfect little parrot! It was love at first sight! My son had also been shopping for the perfect cockatiel also, and found the perfect one! Then, my daughter fell in love with a little conure and suddenly, we were leaving with three birds! They are all sweet, well-behaved babies and we are all just so in love! Thank you so much to the Animal Company!

My Daughter Ciara got Ollie her cockatiel here and has been the happiest little girl with her new pet . She said that the customer service was Great and wants her Daddy to purchase her a new bird from here for Christmas. I told her to give me 3 reasons and I would go look for her Christmas bird . 1.Ollie is a beautiful bird with great character, because it came from The Animal Company 2. Great Customer service ( this comes from a very picky 11 year old who knows here pets ). 3. We must Continue to Support Small Pet Businesses. Looks like I’ll be shopping here for Christmas .

Great local shop for pet necessities. Their selection for dog stuff (why I go there) is good but somewhat limited. They definitely have a lot of birds and bird stuff, which appears to be the primary focus of the store. Super helpful and friendly staff, and they are happy to order things for you.

Went there and the staff was very knowledgeable. Went there to look at birds since I have been interested in Eclectus parrots as that I’m a new time bird owner and have done a little research on the type of parrot I wanted. They allowed me to hold a baby Eclectus parrot and spend a little time with him so I can get a feel for what it would be like. They gave me a lot of information and told me a deposit price and how much a bird would cost if in the end I would be interested in purchasing a lovely new member to my family. I ended up putting a deposit on a egg they had available since the male Eclectus I was handling was already taken. Can’t wait for my new edition to the family that will hopefully be ready to go home in December.

It was really amazing going there. The birds I got to hold were hand fed and very friendly. I may just even get my first bird here!! I'll probably come back and buy lots of supplies too. The staff was very nice and gave us lots of advice on how to handle the bird and what they're like. Definitely a go to place for birds

Love this Shop. I've always shopped here for my cocatiel. She would get her wings clipped, pedicure..and just hang out with other birds. You can actually make a sit-down appt before you choose a bird that you can adapt & feel the love & compassion. The staff are super friendly and very comfortable to be around them. Love everyone there

It's been some time since I've visited the Animal Company. I miss their old location which was just up the street. I liked their old location better in some ways. I thought it had more charm. But the new location has better space for them, I think. Anyway, it's been a joy to visit the store and to see all the birds. I just don't live close by. So I don't visit there often. I appreciate the care they give their birds and they are quite knowledgeable. They've given me helpful advice when I have needed it. I'm overdue for another visit.

In a word: WOW. There are so many ways that shopping for a new bird at The Animal Company was terrific. It was probably due to spending time with Ellen and Kerry. I have since picked out two wonderful birds from the store and each time was given lots of personal attention. They even followed up on them! The store is full of beneficial toys, healthy food options that they'll mix up for you. It's a neighborhood destination – and based on the look on people's faces, provides joy and community for patrons. So now I'm a devotee! I do love this place and pleased with the experiences I've had each time! Yay! for this great, small San Francisco shop!

I want to love this pet store. It’s my neighborhood pet store. It’s a local business, and it caters to pets. Not all pets though. I come here for my mealworms, but today I was sorta proudly(?) told by the cashier that they don’t carry mealworms or crickets anymore. Now i’ll be taking my business to bigger, non-local businesses and won’t be supporting these guys anymore. A bummer for both of us.

Four Years Ago:We love the Animal Company! We went in for treats for our budgies when I saw a little Senegal Parrot hatchling. As I was holding the little thing, my partner was making the down payment. She was so tiny and not weaned so I went to visit her every day for 6 weeks until we could take her home. Ellen, Rick, Naomi, Liz, and the entire staff are amazing! And they continue to be to this day, with food, treats, toys, grooming! They all ask about Adelaide everytime we go in without her. And we'll keep going back!!UPDATE: Adelaide is now nearly 5. We've moved out of San Francisco but will be placing a mail order today. The Animal Company continues to be a significant part of our care for Adelaide! Ellen, Rick, and staff continue to amaze!

Nice birds but expensive, $150 for an injured canary? No prices on cages either so she might have made up the price. My son wants a parrot, if they turn out to be cheaper we will get it there. The rent must be through the roof for things to be so expected.

They take such great care of their animals and are so knowledgeable and helpful. Our baby conure has been the sweetest addition to our family and we return as often as we need to replenish food or toys.

They care of their baby birds really well. They also have boarding services to birds when their owners is out of town. I might use it if I cannot find a bird sitter for my parakeets.
