I essentially got berated twice by two separate employees after bringing my bike into the store. I explained I didn’t have a lock and just needed to purchase a couple of screws, and was there anywhere I could leave my bike? Both employees were so mean to me, continuing to berate me even as I was on my way out of the store.I’m disheartened seeing a review where somebody else brought a bike in without a lock and the cashier was kindly able to watch the bike for several minutes, as I asked them to do for me.It would have been fine if they said no to bringing my bike in nicely, but the two employees were honestly so mean and continued to be mean as I was on my way out of the store. Will never come here again.

I live in the neighborhood and love this store! Recently, I had an issue with my scooter. It was missing a vital part for carrying it. Gabe willingly helped me with the issue and came up with a quick and easy solution: a carabiner. Thank you so much, Gabe!

I recently needed some nuts and bolts and the young guy who answered the phone went above and beyond getting them for me as I wasn’t able to lock my bike out front. I quickly paid while he watched my bike and I was on my way. 10/10 service I just wish I could remember his name for credit in this review. He deserves a raise! 👏👏

The lock on our door was no longer working so I was attempting to remove the doornob so I could bring it to a lockshop for repair. As hard as I tried, I couldn't find a screwdriver that would fit between the cover and the screw to remove it. So I went to my favorite hardware store, Cole Hardware on Cole where I have been going for the past 35 years for advice. I attempted to seek advice from "the Tool Guy". What a mistake! All this crumugen could say was to use a pair of needlenose vicegrips to turn & remove the 2 screws.Undaunted, I walked the few extra blocks to Roberts Hardware on Haight St. and met my savior, Eric. He took the time to look at my photo of the doornob and explained that the nob itself could be removed by simply pushing a pin in the little hole under the nob which would give me easy access. Eric even dug out a lock set and showed me where I could find that little hole. Now that's customer service!!! With that information, it took me less than 5 minutes to remove the nob and then unscrew the 2 screws of the lock to remove it.Thank you Eric from Roberts Hardware. You now have become my new my new favorite Hardware Store!

Thanks Scott for the remarkable advices!I had a leak under my sink and was thinking about calling a plumber. I brought a picture of my leaking pipes to Cole Hardware and asked for help. Scott was able to explain the problem and recommend the appropriate way to fix it and it worked! I saved hundreds of dollars by doing the replacement myself and learned about plumbing along the way!

I really like this hardware store. I haven’t even bought that much from them but I always go back for certain things like copying keys and buying compostable trash bags. I plan on buying plants from them one day, they have a lot outside their store front to choose from.

A great hardware store with really helpful staff! They have the longest hours of any small hardware store in SF. I called last Saturday to ask if they had swim goggles, and Jane was able to dispatch someone from the counter to find them and held them behind the counter for me. She was super-helpful and friendly.I totally come here all the time thanks to the long hours too so I can grab something and get errands done before and after work; most other hardware stores are only open around 10-6, so it's nice to have something open as early as 8am

Staff is often busy but very helpful and knowledgeable. They're probably often understaffed. The store has everything I need 90% of the time. 10% of the time I end up having to order what I'm looking for online since it's metric and they carry less metric than imperial products. The place is quite neat organized on the inside which makes navigating around and finding what I'm looking for quite easy.

I go here because it's nice to shop at a longtime neighborhood business vs ordering online. However, on my most recent trip, on a Sunday morning with an empty store, I seem to have caught the only employee on the floor pre-coffee. He couldn't be bothered to suggest an alternative to a popular item that the store doesn't carry, let alone say good morning, look up from what he was doing, or be remotely polite. The competitive advantage here is human interaction, which some of the older dudes at Cole Hardware might consider leaning in to.

A repeat customer for years. As sometimes happens, I was sold an incorrect light bulb on first trip, but the exchange was seamless and friendly as usual. Jane and Glen were great; thanks, y'all!Perfect on-your-way-home place to grab that last, weird piece needed to complete a project. Simply put: staying open until 7pm most nights has been a sanity saver more than once.Thanks, as always!

Incredibly rude - I cannot stand when staff members, especially at hardware stores, make you feel clueless and embarrassed to be asking for help. I spoke with two staff members and both were dismissive and demeaning. The second passive aggressively mentioned how close to closing we were there, and even shoo-ed us out of the way to “give him space to work”. He was really unhelpful and even ended up giving us parts that didn’t fit together, which we didn’t discover until we were already at home working on our project. I always want to support small local businesses, but this was honestly so terrible and ruined our day. Don’t come here unless you know exactly what you need.

The staff is very nice and more than helpful.You will not be ignored here. Product selections extensive and prices fair from home appliances to nursery needs and almost everything else. Good place to drop off your hazardous materials batteries, unused paints and related. Parking not easy usually a walk to get there. Sign up for their rewards program for special deals and on your birthday get a special discount of 50% x your age on all purchases as a personal discount. Had a bit of problem with a fob car key they made but they walked over to my car to try it and gave me refund immediately. That's service.

I have lived around the corner from them for almost 30 years. They go above and beyond all the time for their customers. The referral service is great , always get good people when I need them . They are a true small business that takes care of its community. Take a few minutes and enjoy one of last few neighborhood retailers left. Its well worth it .

Old school hardware store with a handful of locations in and around San Francisco. Most have quite a range of items you cannot find at the big box stores. They definitely have those stores best when it comes to helpfulness. The staff strolls the aisles looking for customers that look like they might need help and ask them if they do. They genuinely want to help and get you on your way, knowing the city life is a busy life. My only complaint is that they are not open very late, and it seems like the hours change seasonally too. Regardless they win hands down, when I need something a bit unusual or not, I still give them my patronage in hopes that they are here for many more years to come!

Sometime back you referred me to Genteel Plumbing and I had them do a job for me. They were neat, courteous, efficient, pleasant and they gave me a good price. I called them again yesterday, and they gave me a window of time which turned out to be the earlier rather than the later time. Again they were pleasant, efficient and did an excellent job. Explained the whole process when it was over, and presented me with an extremely fair bill. I tend to be on the cheap side. This job entailed removing a toilet and having to go on the roof of a 4 story building where they changed a flaw in the plumbing design and cleaned the drain from the roof. Do you think I'm satisfied? These guys are the best I've ever seen.

Cole hardware is the coolest store. They sell almost everything. How they fit all the stuff in the store is amazing. They have paint, plants, kitchen items, every holiday items, games, stuff you didn't know you needed and more. The layout of the store is really impressive too. It's a neighborhood gem.

Terrible terrible service! I went to the store to buy some plants and I wanted to ask a few questions. one of the crew said I will only answer u, if u r 6 ft away and then she took out her meter to measure the distance! So rude! I was 4ft or more away, I was wearing a mask as was she! I wasn’t coughing or had fever. I cannot believe her behavior. I am not sure why she was angry but this is not how u treat people!
