**WARNING*****DO NOT BUY HERE!!!I know you may read this and gloss over it but read my past reviews... I'm fair and only have 1 other really bad review for legitimate reasons, this isn't a random fake post. This owner is SHADY and unscrupulous. We came in to buy a Flowerhorn-they have big heads (nuchal hump) and are usually very interactive. When the owner came to bag him, we noticed he was leaning against the top edge of the tank and gasping a bit, I wish we knew beforehand that he was sick but when we asked about it, he says, "oh he's fine he just ate"... We had a tank ready; it was prepped. We treated the water, added nitrate eating bacteria, had the temp, ph., nitrates etc. tested and retested prior to bringing him home. After the acclimation process and he was fully released, he literally sank straight to the bottom. He was near paralyzed and dragging himself. They were already closed so we called them the next morning and explained EVERYTHING. The owner says, " Oh he's fine, we just got him days 2 ago so he's stressed out, give him 3 days and call us back if he's not better." So, we researched as much as we could, he wouldn't eat and started falling over late the 2nd night, and plus we noticed flaking on his scales. We tried an aquarium salt bath the 2nd night, but he was getting worse. He died the 3rd day in the morning, right before we were going to get meds. I called them immediately, which happened to be the 3rd day, and was told tough luck, the owner was off, call the next day. When I called back, I was told I wasn't talking to the person who sold him to me which was a lie(I recognized his voice), I was told I must not have had a proper tank setup even though I have literally every test kit possible and liquid tests too, he then hangs up on me pretending to have phone static like we live in 1996 on cordless phones. This place is terrible, I called immediately and not only that, in the store, before bagging the Flowerhorn, if the owner would have said, "Hey, you seem to be questioning his health, are you sure you want him"?, rather than give us excuse after excuse as to why he wasn't eating and gasping for air near the top, I would of have waited to find a healthier flowerhorn. Do yourself a favor, go somewhere else. Avoid the headache and heartbreak. I also read some other "iffy" posts on this place, talking about that if a fish dies then it must be the buyer's fault, that may be mostly true, but not this time. It's not just about the money, it's about the principle and the lying. Those pics include his crawling right out of the bag, with 2 hours of bringing him home, and his flakey skin which we didn't notice until the 2nd night. ***** I've noticed the suspect, and probably fake 5 star reviews-just look at the users profiles and the low reviews they have, don't fall for the fake reviews to keep their ratings high, only trust people's reviews that have a high review count. I review things to help local businesses and give positive feedback when it's deserved and I rarely leave back feedback unless it's absolutely deserving.

I don’t know why they can’t Invest theTime to quarantine new fish shipments?? I got an infected platinum albino Discus and wiped out half my tank in 3 days time! I tested my chemistry and all normal. These were healthy until add this new pair. They run a low quality operation, sell “cheap” but costs you more in the end.

Basically, it's an inhumane fish market. The way they treat the fish is not only inhumane, but the owner will "forget the price" trying to get you to pay more. Additionally, they have no problem selling very sick fish and bagging them up for their "sale" full of disease and parasites. Infected my whole tank, and they're very nonchalant about your stuff just dying off.Not only that, but the guy behind the counter very aggressively grabbed a grocery bag I was holding demanding to look at it, accusing me of stealing, preventing me from just leaving. Then, with not so much as an apology, lectured me about it. Borderline assault.

The place can be more organized and lighting can be brighter, yes. However, none of those matter since this store has this amazing collection of both fresh water and salt water fish and shell fish with good quality. In my opinion, the best aquarium store in town and in the SF bat area.

They have very healthy fish and large selection of freshwater and saltwater. A lot of supplies and food. Everything you need in the hobby you can find here. They are great at their job and the staff is very nice and knowledge. The tanks are always clean and crystal clear. Very rare to see a dead fish in a tank. They have great prices, definitely the best in the San Francisco Bay Area. I like the fact that you can get a bucket and a net and catch the fish yourself. It adds to the experience and gives you the chance to really look at the fish before buying. Also, the best pricing for flowerhorns I’ve ever seen. Will definitely buy one soon. 10/10. Definitely recommend this place. It’s my go-to aquarium for sure.

Really really bad quality for the animals… I saw a few lobsters that were literally dead.

Really inhumane setup for the hermit crabs for sale. Literally a pint size plastic container with a bit of dirty water in the bottom. Truly was shocking. My guess from experience is that these crabs would be hard to bring back from these conditions after purchasing, might die soon but even if they didn't it's probably cut their lifespan by a few years just. For a store setup they need minimum shallow fresh and salt water dishes, a bit of a shell selection, and a food dish with some pellets and veggies, and a substrate of some kind in the cage. Can't say anything towards other fish as that's not my area. If you're a fish only shop that doesn't have the setup for land hermit crabs, just don't sell them instead of trying to make a quick buck like this. Whether you look at it as sacrificing the quality of your pruduct or the health of the animals it's bot a good look for this business.

THEY HAVE SUCH A GOOD SELECTION!!! they have fish that span from tropical fish (yes including nemo and dory) to japanese chubby goldfish! So cute! I personally for the angelfish, goldfish and baby bettas which are thriving! They also have a area for any supplies you may need including fish tanks, air pumps, and fish food! They also have a plant area in the front of the store and they're also super nice! Easily my new favorite fish store! Bonus, the shop owner can speak cantonese if you need any translation and they are super knowledgeable about how to own the fish so you can ask them any questions! They're selection is not only diverse but it's a lot cheaper than chain pet stores. For example, I usually go to pet club which is a pet stores based in the bag area and I got angelfish there for $6.99 each but here they were 2/$5 !! That's half the cost of what I usually pay! I cant describe how amazing this store is, definitely check it out if you are looking to get new fish or are just a beginner :)

Our favorite aquarium store! We bought guppies (m/f variety & dumbo ones), cherry shrimps, ghost shrimps, mystery snail, betta & live plants. They are all healthy & doing well - except for our poor Betta that died cause we forgot to find someone to take care of him when we were away for weeks. Coming here always make me want to have a salt water aquarium! I feel that they are more knowledgeable than our nearby PetSmart store.Planning on buying our next tree here & hoping they get a Passionfruit vine too come summer.

I’ve been going to this place for years, they are pretty fair in prices, and have good variety of fishes. I’ve seen reviews that they say that the people that work here is rude, but that’s just the way they are, you people just need to adapt to how other people are, I’m sure they don’t mean to be rude! Those who complain about dead fishes, they’re not all gonna be healthy, just like when one dies in your care!!

Got all of them from 6th ave. Good selection of fish and you can also find some rare fish that you don't usually see at most of the regular pet shop. You can also call them for fish availability. Friendly staff, overall it's a good place and would come back here again .

Went here with a couple friends who already have a decent fish collection at home. I was a little interested in starting my own aquarium but after visiting 6th Avenue I'm definitely keen to start. Massive selection of different types, simple and exotic.

Chaotic store, cheaper prices and many fish, but witnessed some very poor fish treatment/handling. Some bigger fish are in a tiny tank where they can barely move. Loud music, incense. Found a clown fish in a small plastic bag, waiting to die. Grasping for air, other fish in plastic bags on THE FLOOR. Custermers could easily step on them. Probably the owner was very stressed and not friendly at all.

6th Avenue Aquarium is a great place to get fish and fish supplies. Everything is reasonably priced, and they have lots of supplies and fish to choose from. Over the years, I've bought several betta, goldfish, and a koi fish from them. All of the fish, except for a handful of betta, lived for a long time! (The betta dying was partially on our part, we had them temporarily for a project [and were planning on giving them away after], and due to cross contamination of water, one betta had velvet disease which spread to the other fish.) We had to give away the koi fish fairly recently due to it quickly outgrowing the space we had for it, but the last I heard it is doing wonderful in its new home at in a koi pond (which is run by specialists).I currently have one koi betta fish, and she is doing wonderfully! Unfortunately when introducing her to a new fish to start creating a community tank she had a bit of aggressiveness (which is typical in bettas, namely in males, although mine is a female), but this of course is not the doing of this store. I still buy my supplies from them, and the people who work there are nice and pretty helpful. My one complaint is that it is a bit cramped, which has always been a bit of an issue. But of course being in San Francisco, with limited space, it's understandable.Overall I recommend this place for your fish needs!

Update nothing has changed, your better off shopping from a reputable online store. 90% positive a good portion of those positive reviews are from owner, family and ‘challenged’ employees. Best efforts will be made to keep it short but detailed. 1st I am a USMC, 2xsuper squad leader, honorable discharged, born & raised in the very north part of the Midwest, and recently temp handicapped. I have two visits to this store and both times I have hobbled in with my cane and neither time did anyone greet me or ask if I needed help. Both times after having to ask for assistance the service I got was rushed and any questions I asked seemed to annoy them. They are more concerned about the clock then customer service. Both times I have bought multiple fish and both times only one of the fish survived… this last experience was the worst.showed up a couple min before closing, i had to rush across town to do so. I was there to return 1fish that there employee said was non aggressive & new co2 canister, big leak @top gasket. three of the fish I bought and two of mine dead due to there supposed to be non aggressive fish. We are closed is the first words then repeated even though there was 10+mn before posted closing times. When i finally was able to mention why I was there, he accused me of stealing, and refused to help unless I had receipt. The receipt for the $135 dollar purchase only 1day prior, was ruined when one of the bags they packed leaked while driving home.If his employee actually told him i stole it before i even left the store & he believed it, then why didn’t he confront me the night before when it happened? He walked right by me and we acknowledged each other on his way to his car only moments after I left and as he was locking the front gate. He challenged my Honesty & integrity and those being super important part of my core values, I would rather drive to east bay, Santa Rosa or gilroy before I would support this store and owner. There are other stores not as fancy or look as nice but will offer you much better experience and satisfaction. It’s been three weeks since I first posted this and the owner has not responded. That should tell you how important customer service and the customer themselves matter to him…

It is a nice store with a lot of variety and very reasonable prices, although I would only visit this store if you were somewhat experienced with fish. Since they seem to be a wholesale store, one has to be very careful to pick fish that look healthy and would be compatible. I recently bought some pygmy corys and they are in great condition. I also bought here some bumblebee gobies and they lived long, unofrtunately I lost all but one to my mistakes but otherwise they would have lived longer. Have in mind that both these fish were active in their tanks and I had them on quarantine for about 2 weeks after I bought them with different medicines. The staff does advises you, as I overheard them telling a customer not to mix goldfish with any other fish (good advice), but I wouldn't just trust on them telling you what's right or wrong. Nice fish, but always ALWAYS quarantine them.

Love their selection of freshwater and saltwater fish, especially the exotic plecos like the mango and snowball plecos. Beautiful! However, 4-star rating instead of 5 because I found that the prices of their supplies and accessories are more expensive than what I see on Amazon or other aquarium supply stores

Best pet fish store in the Bay. Selection is huge. Sundays will always have saltwater aquarium fishes/critters on sale. They get large weekly shipments of fish so they need to sell them quick.Always always always quarantine your purchases before putting them into your established tanks.

When I first found Sixth Avenue aquarium at some mixed reviews, but like any other location there will always be mixed reviews so I decided to check it out for myself. The staff were friendly and informative, they have a huge selection of freshwater saltwater fish and also plants. What I liked about this location was that I was able to actually grab my own fish then I wanted out of the tank which is something that I have never been able to do in any location that I have been to in the past.

I bought fish here because of the variety. I have a small patio pond for 3 years with 3 shebunkins. I decided to get 2 more to add to the pond. I added them, and one white one had ich. It died after a few days. I went back, and he sold me prazipro. After research, I realized this does nothing to ich. Unfortunately, by this time, two of my fish I had since eggs died. I am furious and will not go here again. There are often dead fish in the tanks, and the tanks are tiny.
