So good! Service was great from start to finish. We ordered the pretzel sticks with cheese, Ribeye Steak, and the Grilled cheese and all three were delicious. Place was really stylish and relaxed, would definitely recommend!

Gourmet yet classic Americana food. They put a little extra touch into their dishes. The fried okra tasted like it was straight from the south. We also tried the pretzels and beer cheese which were fresh, homemade deliciousness! For our main course we had the bison burger with garlic fries and the volcano burger with the side cesar salad. Both were delicious, juicy, and flavorful. The drinks are fun and not poured with a light hand. We ended up getting the Old Fashion and Rose Cocktail. We could only do one because they were pretty strong. Any more and we wouldn't have been able to walk outta the place! Lol! Very good food for such a small quaint town and the only big restaurant around. It will not disappoint.

I greatly enjoyed the experience. We ordered many many appetizers, probably 15+ and they were good. Brussel spouts were cooked well just quite a bit too much lemon for my liking but about half the table enjoyed it. We also ordered the wings, tacos, pretzels, and others that were all delicious. The drinks were made well, next time I'm in McCloud I will definitely go back here!

What a lovely find in McCloud. This was right next to my lodging for the night and was one of the few, if not only dining spot for dinner. There seems to be a limited number of servers, as there were 3 and while there was seating available, they were unable to accommodate more. I was told there would be a 15 minute wait, then received a call 5 minutes later that the seating was ready.Food-wise, they really have a great assortment of classic comfort foods. The bone marrow and chicken pot pie are definitely recommended. Something hearty and delicious is a fine way to end the evening. Had a bit of a wait before I was able to order dessert, but other than that, a good experience overall.

I really enjoyed the food, drinks and ambiance of this mountain town bar. Local feel but very warm environment and good service.I had the Brussel sprouts, well cooked in a balsamic sauce, heavy but really good. Then the mushroom flatbread which is on a gluten-free cauliflower crust, the toppings were delicious but the crust was under baked. Then a Caesar salad which was good. I would for sure come back and eat/drink here again!

We stopped in for dinner at the Axe and Rose during our visit to McCloud. The food was great, and the atmosphere was perfect! Such a cozy cabiny feel. We got a burger and fish and chips, as well as beer and a yummy old fashioned! Definitely worth a stop if you're in McCloud!

What a disappointment. Their budget clearly went to good sineage over staff development or food quality. To be fair I didn’t actually end up eating there. I waited 10 mins to be assisted even though there were maybe 4 tables occupied. That’s cool. I mean it was a Saturday & while there were like 8 people working, phones do need to be checked & coworkers chatted with as they cut out early & snacks to be eaten by the employees while I waited. It smelled kinda gross anyway & looked dirty. I would have forgiven a lot if they had a decent beer selection but they had maybe 4 on tap. I mean I wasn’t expecting Lucky Baldwin’s but at least add some Belgian Ale bottles to the rotation? Locals avoid it & that should’ve been a clue. You’re better off going down the street to the Meat Market & Tavern where the staff all have lovely attitudes & it seems cheery inside. Instead of when you go inside Axe & Rose and everyone is miserable. Don’t bother with Axe & Rose. Trust. It’s utterly depressing & a waste of space

Great food and atmosphere! Beautiful historic building (the banquet hall adjacent to the dining room still has the original hand-painted ceiling). The grilled zucchini skewers were amazing! They're huge (each one is literally a quarter of a full size summer squash cut length-wise), and they were just the right amount of crunchy and not overcooked but still tender. The Chicken Basket is a great "value meal", and the chicken tenders are actually pieces of chicken (not blended mystery meat). It was a great meal after a full day of outdoor activities.

This place is hit and miss. Sometimes food and service are good. Other times food misses the mark and the staff very unfriendly. Recently as the only customers we were ignored for 5 minutes until a server tossed down the silverware and napkin without so much as a hello. Felt very unwelcome so we walked out. UPDATE Oct 2023, subsequent visits have been a positive experience! We all have bad days.

Got there and there was only 1 large party ahead of us, we had 2 in our party, and another small party of 2. We were seated right away, but soon noticed that all of the wait staff, save one waitress, were more interested in standing behind the bar area and chatting, than waiting on their customers. We ordered an appetizer, grilled zucchini, as soon as we sat down, and about 10 minutes later ordered our entrees. We didn't get the zucchini until 40 minutes after we had ordered it, and after waiting over an hour for our entrees that never came, we finally just put some money on the table and walked out. Terrible customer service, we won't be back.

McCloud is a very small town. It has 4 to 5 eateries. This one is more upscale, with a good bar program and higher end American cuisine. Had the charred Brussels sprouts appetizer, best ever. Had an excellent burger, wife had fish and chips. Will have to try the big entrees next trip. Also had fast, friendly service. It is a large space that apparently doubles as an event space and has a stage for shows in large room next to main dining room.

Fun atmosphere but the food was not good. The flatbread lacked taste and was not hot, the lightly fried beans were half fried batter with no flavor and the prices were more than the meat market restaurant a block down the street. We are at the meat market restaurant twice and we're blown away with how good the food was. We thought we should give another restaurant a try and we are sorry we did. Do yourself a favor and go to the meat market restaurant if you want great food.

Arrived with one other party inside and a 8-person party of our own. We were told there was a 15 minute wait, with the entire restaurant open, save the one table in use. That's fine, there looked to be minimal back house staff, so with the 8-top, there is an expected wait.Once we got our table, we sat un-greeted for 15 minutes while I looked upon 6 of the staff behind the bar just chatting. We we were still 8 of 20 people in the entire place. Our poor server was also bartending, but she was pretty good for how she was the only one serving customers. With that said, we didn't get any service after we got our food. Our drinks ran dry and we just gave up.As for the food, it was decent, but as fate would have it, one of our party had a hair in their pasta and lost their appetite. I probably wouldn't come here again just for the lack of customer service.

The food deserves 5 stars. It's unusual (test their pork rinds!), really good, and made from local and organic ingredients! But I want back today and the bartender was truly mean. Maybe because I came as a single dad with kids? I have been poorly welcomed, never served, and finally we left after 15 minutes and went to Mt Shasta, beer garden (tree nursery). Not the same food, but a much warmer place!

The atmosphere was nice. We thought it strange that the wait staff were wearing Hoodies (a little too casual for a nice sit-down dining place, but hey, it was winter). No points deducted for that though. We ordered the fish and chips (came recommended by the hostess), linguini, and the harvest salad. The fish and fries were so stale and overcooked that we couldn't eat them. We've never had fish that dry. We did mention it to the waiter, but we don't think it went any farther than him. When we left,, he acted like everything was great (very nice guy btw). The linguini and veggies were also overcooked, but had good flavor, and we were able to eat all of it. We're big salad lovers, and sad to say that the harvest salad was also something we couldn't finish, which is saying a lot because my husband can usually finish anything! Two points off for the food, and another point off because when we asked for water, it was served in a plastic, throw away cups. Too wastful in our opinion. We really wanted to like this place, as it's only one of two dinner restaurants in downtown McCloud, but we probably won't be going back. We hope it was just an off night and that this is not their norm, but it was our experience.

Based purely on the food, Axe & Rose would get five stars from me. The owners have apparently stepped up their game. The kitchen has consistently put out great food at a decent price these past months (summer/fall 2019).The service, on the other hand, can leave alot to be desired. Today's meal was served by the bartender/waiter, who served the tables around us in a seemingly effective manner. But he chose to turn his back on us whenever he went by our table. I'm thinking it's because my partner and I (we're locals) didn't order alcoholic drinks? We felt singled out, and ignored. But, again, the food was excellent!

The atmosphere was wonderful not overly loud like most sport bars. The fried okra was crispy and french fries were crunchy. The chicken salad filled the plate and burger was great. I would go back for seconds but there wasn't enough room left in my belly, perhaps tomorrow after I have solved the golden triangle.

Wonderful. Best clam chowder West of Massachusetts, according to my hard-core New England friend (I loved it too). Steak and vegetables were perfectly cooked, medium rare, and the mussels in broth were delicious too: simple, as they should be, so each ingredient shines. Service was impeccable. The TVs over the bar were plenty quiet so conversation wasn't at all difficult. Overall: a delight.

One of the best burgers in Northern California. If you like hot and spicy, try the Volcano Burger Special. I haven't seen my sister down a burger like a kid eating a sundae of there own in a long time. Another must is the fish and chips. If you are in the area, you won't be disappointed by stopping by for lunch or dinner.

Where To start. Amazing atmosphere, our waitress Annie was the best ever. Had homemade creamy tomato soup that was the best I've had! Also had fish and chips that were cooked perfectly and fresh, not too mention they grill the lemons for you! When's the last time you saw that? Husband had pub burger and its right out of a San fransisco high end place. So delicious and friendly! What a gem! Thank you for everything!

After leaving another restaurant in McCloud because no one acknowledged our presence, we aimlessly drove around looking for another food option. We looked at the menu here, then decided to leave because they had few vegetarian options. Yvonne saw us outside, greeted us, and asked us if we had any questions. When I told her I couldn't eat there because I'm a vegetarian, she said the chef would be happy to accommodate me. The food was amazing, the staff is even better. I love this place and will definitely be back.

Despite seeing other customers and waiters on the outdoor seatings, we were told that they will not serve us on the outdoor seating due to smoke which was particularly clear on that day. They were also out of stakes and had no drink menu. The atmosphere was nice but the service was unsatisfactory.

Very good food! We stopped on our way home from Reno to Mt.Shasta. We were hungry and thirsty, the service was top notched & our lunch order of buffalo chicken wings, brussel sprouts, and bunless burger was terrific! We will definitely go back again..oh by the way, their serving of chicken wings (10) is much larger than other places for a less expensive price of $11. I recently paid $12 at Coopers Bar & Grill for (6)..

Wow, the service was horrible and rude. Our daughter has a severe food allergy and the server seemed annoyed when we asked about a certain item on the menu. Never checked on us after food was delivered....delivered wrong item and walked away when the wife was in the middle of saying something to her (letting her know that the ranch dressing was actually Blue Cheese). Left the check and never came back to close us out... had to go up to the bar and waited 15 minutes until someone finally helped. You will never survive in a small community like McCloud treating customers with a $75+ bill like that!
