3 weeks ago I adopted a blue tongue skink from Alan’s Pet Center in Santa Monica. When I adopted him there was another skink within the enclosure that didn’t look so hot. He had crusty eyes and was missing multiple toes. So I adopted the other one due to that one being seemingly more tame. Within these three weeks, he has eaten but has declined in health. Once I noticed he got a crusty on his left eye, I decided to take him to the vet. I also noticed that he had one toe that was raw and seemingly looked like it was hanging on by a thread (I noticed this toe when I adopted him but had never had a skink before so figured that maybe it was normal or chopped it up to there being so many reptiles that not everyone is going to get the exact same care when shedding). Yesterday I took him to the vet where they had to amputate 5 of his toes due to them looking ectopic (or like they were about to fall off). He also had to get probiotics for his eye and an xray to ensure there was nothing inside him that could be causing all of these things. I ended up leaving the vet with a skink that had to have 5 of his toes amputated, medicine and i’m still waiting on his xrays to come in. I called this pet store just to let them know that my skink was sick and that they should probably take the other skink that was with my skink in the enclosure (if he was still there) to the vet which they told me they didn’t sell him in that state to me like that. I would like to preface that i’ve only had him for 3 weeks, followed their care guides and have been feeding him a varied diet that is supplemental to him. If you know anything about reptiles, a lot of the time sickness aren’t always fast moving. It takes time to build up in their system before it’s visible to the eye. I have not done anything or could possibly do anything to cause his toes to fall off within three weeks. I’m writing this review because if anyone loves animals as much as I do it will break your heart to adopt one only for them to be extremely sick. I wouldn’t recommend buying reptiles from this place especially if you aren’t able to pay a hefty vet bill pretty soon after getting them or if you have kids (who would be heart broken to know how sick their new pet is sick) I promise to you that I have done everything I could since getting him to ensure that his quality of life is substantial. Including taking him to the vet as soon as I saw a problem. If you want to get a reptile please do your research on who you’re buying them from. Otherwise, you’ll be in my situation where you’re doing the best by your animal and the pet store you bought them from tells you that it’s your fault. I would only recommend getting reptiles from a place that actually cares about them more than the money they make off of them. Please listen to my words and make a sound decision on whether you really want to buy a reptile from here and if you have the money to heal what they lacked in care.Update: after reviewing his X-rays, there is concern of metabolic bone disease as well as problems with the abdomen. Like I said it’s impossible for me to be able to cause such harm to this sweet skink in 3 weeks. I’m so disappointed.

They sell rats, both pets AND feeder rats if you’re looking for them!! I got two girls. The staff was very chill, and all the animals there looked very well taken care of. They have a large variety of reptiles, spiders and birds. I definitely encourage ya’ll to go here!!!! :33 Here’s a picture of my rat in her cage at home right after I bought her. Her name’s ham :3

A simple errand turned into a great experience! Mike is a very informative person and gives great recommendations. Mike also is super attentive to all living creatures; yes even the 'creepy crawlers'. The East LA location is what inspired me to visit the their West location which is also amazing! Amazing experience, everyone needs to check them out!!

Went to the first pet shop google recommended, they didn’t have feeder fish nor red ears slider female at least they weren’t sure if they were. This shop! had only one and it identified as female from the way this dude informed me he seems to be very knowledgeable and even gave me details that I didn’t know abt female sliders. I went and took this big girl home as Ik each male needs 2-3 females but thought he could handle sum, my boy was content enough and ik from experience to feed you all day ;) the feeder fish were well priced and went and bought me a combo of 2 breeds. Will be back for accessories and feeders some more, good stuff. I should have left a tip the dude hooked it up wt the feeders but I will be back like I said. Thanks to this place I recommend it :)

I bought 3 female rats from them and were told that all of them were 3 weeks old (not old enough to reproduce). One of them gave BIRTH and another was a MALE. When the manager for both locations, Mike, was talked to he was very disrespectful and told me that I “got what I paid for.” I clearly didn’t because I paid for 3 FEMALE NON PREGNANT RATS and obviously didn’t get that. No refund was offered. I was also told wrong information at the store that I could return the cage but not the rats, which Mike said was wrong and I could only return the rats. I don’t want to return these rats to a place that sells pregnant rats to unknowing customers and can’t even tell apart male and female genitalia. When I bought them I was informed that they hadn’t eaten yet (it was 5pm) and their bedding is not appropriate for rats (they buy it because it’s cheaper in bulk).

Lots of reptiles, a bit less fish, rodents including guinea pigs, feeder rats and mice, and barely any birds. You can hold some of the reptiles, don't know about the birds though. Overall highly recommend

this place deserves to be shut down because the way that they treat their animals is truly inhumane for being a pet store. they will sell you sick animals and even pregnant ones and tell you that “you got what you paid for”. DO NOT BUY FROM HERE!!

The place was a bit hot especially for the little small animals kept in the glass tanks. No enrichment for them at all. I took a rat home and she ended up showing signs of respiratory problems and lethargy. Ended up taking her to the vet and she was very sick. Don’t get your small animals here. Maybe for feeders but definitely not for pets. Customer service was okay but I’d prefer them to take better care of the furry friends they have.

Staff here very unprofessional asked the guy in front of the counter about the sex of a Russian tortious didn't have the answer and didn't want to help. Asked someone else that was working there he was gonna help me but then the guy in the front counter comes running and tells me that he had already told me they didn't know the sex of the tortious and they couldn't help me came up pretty confrontational couldn't find a solution to the problem. Very unprofessional individual. I have bought tortious from them in the past not gonna be back.

This pet store saved my baby turtle!!My turtle had severe shell rot and I thought we were gonna lose her until an employee gave us a spray designed to cure reptiles and a few months laterHer shell was fully sealed!!! 😍Cant recommend em enoughBefore and After pics

Sold us a sick rats, including a pregnant one, and Mike was extremely insensitive and unhelpful. Horrible place. All rodents are kept in bad conditions, as admitted by an employee.

These guys are awesome..I needed to upgrade my son's Bearded Dragon enclosure and was tired of taking baby steps as far as tank sizing...these guys set me up with what should be its forever home moving forward...knowledgeable/friendly staff, large selection, fair prices. We boarded our bearded dragon here for a couple days and less than two weeks after picking her up she contracted a nasty Yellow Fungus Disease infection all over her body. Tanks are clearly unsanitary. The treatment for YFD is expensive and the infected reptile can still die. Would not recommend.

The care for the reptiles were better than petsmart so that’s a start but there was a skinny green anole that was on its last breath and the care for the rodents like hamsters was not good, they need at least 30 gallon tanks and I saw some hairless Guinea pigs in a small cage! They need lots of space and it is impossible to properly take care of hamsters, rats, and Guinea pigs in a petstore, it is simply too much work. I would recommend that you guys would just care and sell for reptiles and fish because it is simply just the only way to properly take care of your animals. So please stop selling rodents and stick to what you guys can keep healthy. I will say that the prices on reptile products are very good despite the improper care for some animals in your store.

Disgusting service. I ordered from them and they scammed me for a near-empty container which should’ve had 25 dubia roaches inside. - There was only 1 small roach in each container. Happened twice and I disputed. Employee on the phone said it was a new hire who messed up the order but later changes the story and says it was delivered right. They don’t take ownership here and they definitely have no interest in making it right. We got called scammers for disputing the orders that they screwed us on. We were also told to remove our negative comment if we want to be able to shop from them again. NOPE! Totally okay with being cancelled here LOL Shop elsewhere guys. Very crooked business.

Bought a fish here that cost me $15 only because it’s the last one. Went to a different store today to explore and found the same fish for $6. I feel ripped off. Overpriced in my opinion. Won’t be going back. They didn’t even have what I was looking for.

The reptiles were in wonderful condition however their rats were not. Feeder rats, I understand they’re being sold off as food but the domesticated rats they have for sale as pets were in terrible condition. The store is way too hot for them to be in glass tanks, on top of that there were black bugs crawling on them. One of them was in the corner panting heavily with tons of black bugs, hunched over. Poor theme seemed like he was on the verge of death with respiratory issues. I understand the main importance of the store is reptiles but if you’re you going to sell other animals as pets, they should have some attention on how they’re being cared for in the store as well.
