I've been having many keys made generally at Home Depot or a locksmith a couple of miles down Drake. When Fairfax Lumber and hardware was unable to make a key for my Kia they referred me to the locksmith who made one for $5.50. I recently had a basic key made at Home Depot, a few miles away for $ 4.34. Needing a final simple door key I went to Fairfax Lumber and hardware. They made it without telling me the price. At checkout, this one simple key cost EIGHT DOLLARS AND THIRTY F IVE CENTS. I figured something was wrong and asked the checkout person to recheck. $8.35 for One Simple Door Key !!!! EIGHT Dollars + for one simple key.Imagine if I walked into this store to buy ANYTHING what they'd charge me?I'll never buy anything there again..

I love this place! Ok, I love hardware stores. It's got just about everything you'll need (no it's NOT home despot, which has its place in the annuals of hardware stores.) They have a lovely garden section with great help, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable (Ask for Peter.) They always have great seasonal selections as well as vegetable starter plants. Plus they always have good holiday decorations and inspiration. Their crew is a bit eccentric, which I think is a plus!

1. Be careful when you buy gravel or drain rock. The machine operators drop the material on your truck but leave some on the sides, causing scratches and damage. and If you tell them something they go and make fun of the other members of the store instead of thinking that they should be careful with the customer's property.2. Possibly the people inside will help you find what you need for Your projects, but some of those outside don't even want to walk to help you.3. Customer service is a fundamental part of business and few people in that store understand it.4. To my friends, family and those who see this post, be careful and even if it is further away, going to San Rafael is cheaper than having a bad experience.

Awesome store... always eager to help you, and they occasionally have some great finds. Like today, they had one seedless ruby red grape vine left for $15. Amazon has it for $65 ($50 + $15 s&h). I was so happy to find it locally and not have to wait for it to be delivered.

George in Lumber provided the best customer service I've had in a while! George helped me figure out the wood I needed for my beekeeping project, and helped me to modify the plans to suit the stock that was available (he actually does complex math!). He was kind, patient and friendly. My project turned out great! Thanks so much George!👍🏾

Awesome great folks. Competative pricing and full inventory. They smash on the competition time and time again. They cannot be lived without and never rub it in. Used to have a great salvage yard but somehow I haven't much missed it. That's really surprising now that I think about it. Anyway a definite favorite of mine. I think there's some new management though and changes might be a little rough... Like they're lumber inventory. Hmm...

I would give ten stars if I could. I've been coming to this store for years, as I live in the neighborhood and I like to shop locally, even if it is pricier than than larger stores. Yesterday I went to Home Depot as I needed a bunch of stuff for a home improvement project, and I was pretty sure that some of the things weren't at this store. Wow, going to HD was such an abysmal experience. Even finding anyone at all there to ask was challenging, and each of the three employees I spoke to was rude and barely helped. What a pleasure to go back to Fairfax hardware this morning! Extremely helpful, friendly, knowledgeable employees, each of whom walked me to where I could find what I wanted, and then explained things I hadn't asked for that were very useful. I am happy to pay a higher price for this kind of service and happy to support the neighborhood store. Fairfax hardware, you guys rock!!!

Sure, you could notice that Ace hardware bought out this cute local hardware store, but I would counter it with my personal experiences as still delivering that local hardware store. The staff are always very helpful, polite, and knowledgeable. If you can afford to spend the extra few dollars and safe a trip to a large hardware store, I would definitely look at Fairfax Lumber and Hardware.

One of my favorite hardware stores. I love all the nooks & crannies and they seem to always have what I need. And you just cannot beat the friendly and helpful customer service, both inside and out!

The paint department nailed it, along with some good advice--that is to say, the color match on the grey-ish, beige-ish who-knpws-what-all-else-is-in-there-ish color is perfect. The person mixing to match an empty 5-gallon can this reviewer brought in also had excellent recommendations for a primer in an unusual use--"speed channels" on a recently installed system. Excellent work, excellent customer relations and it is much appreciated! Thanks!

Great people and a good inventory of most everything a hardware store should have. Their recycled building materials store, the Away Station has been closed so it's just all new items again (sad to see that go). They are 100% employee owned. So glad to have them in Fairfax!

Fairfax Lumber is the last place to have customer service. It's such a treat to have such cheerful knowledgeable people. I love their staff and they have quality products.

I absolutely love this place. It's an Ace hardware and there always pretty good but some are better than others due to the staff and that is definitely the case with Fairfax Lumber and Hardware. Customer service is top notch and everyone is always willing to go that extra step if needed.

This is an employee-owned hardware store, associated with Ace Hardware. So you can get a large variety of building and remodeling items, hardware and lumber there. The employees are very knowledgeable and helpful, as owners. It's convenient to Sleepy Hollow, on Broadway. There is also a decent garden shop where you can get plants, garden decorations and soil amendments. The regular employee, Peter, is very helpful.

This is an old store that can save your life on a dooms day, specially in the boonies like Fairfax. They have just about a little bit of everything and great service. The only reason why I could not give it a five stars, is because it seems somewhat chaotic finding what you need but if you get someone to find it for you then you are ok. A remodel would take away the small town store feeling.

Prices 50% higher to double what you find at Home Depot or on line. Staff is somewhat helpful, but inconsistently so and some have an attitude. Only go there if you need something right away and willing to pay a steep premium.Today I purchased two small plumbing parts and was surprised at check out with the charge. Double what I expected, so I checked on line and sure enough it was more than double the cost.I rarely go to Fairfax Lumber for that reason. Don't mind paying a fair premium for buying local, convenience, and help....but not double the price.

Place is OK. Good selection and nice to have nearby, but the employees are hit and miss. One is great and helpful and the next tries to make you feel like an idiot because you ask if there carry something when you can't find it. Too bad.

These guys are an old time place with everything under the sun you could need for building, or home improvement. They also have pretty good customer service in that you can find a number of people here to help you find stuff. However, it ends there. The old timers employees who have been there for an eternity it seems are arrogant, rude and downright unhelpful. They gossip, sometimes in front of you even. They make snide remarks and for some reason these people think you should know who they are as if they are god's gift or something.Very strange indeed.I don't get it why Fairfax has so so many of these types walking around, as if their tiny unknown scene is the best thing happening on Earth?!?!It's not fun to go into a store; and this place is no exception, where you have to 'fit in' to be accepted in order to buy your paint tape.Thumbs down on customer service.

It's a great place for a wide variety of hardware and gardening needs. The prices are reasonable and inline with the competitors. I would recommend checking them out.

One of the best home town hardware stores ever -- Fairfax is blessed indeed to have this be one of its anchor businesses. The staff are knowledgeable -- their product selection superb. The fact that they have the "Away Station" - a resource recovery enterprise specializing in second-hand building materials is testimony to Fairfax Lumber's appreciation for service to the community. Great people -- always pleasure doing business at Fairfax Lumber.

I had a leaking bathroom faucet. It was bought 13 years ago and I couldn't even identify the manufacturer. Typically this isn't a hard job to replace a cartridge. But I could not get the cartridge out.Took the whole assembly to Fairfax Lumber and Bob (I can't believe I didn't get his name) took it as a personal challenge to help me get to the offending washer. 15-20 minutes of muscle and perseverance and victory was ours.He even attracted a small crowd of interested onlookers.I always get the best service from knowledgeable, engaged, staff. Just say no to Home Depot!

The men working in the lumberyard were amazing! Couldn’t have been more helpful. However, Steve who works at the lumber counter is a different story. He was unbelievably rude. Because of our interaction I will be sure to avoid this hardware store in the future. He might be the unhappiest person living in all of Fairfax.

Love the local vibe, especially the people that work there inside and out. Always buy my redwood mulch there. And many other things. Consistent, reliable service.

As a hardware/building supply store Fairfax Lumber is great. It's not a mega-store like the big chain outlets in San Rafael, and thus has a correspondingly smaller inventory. But the staff is super-helpful and numerous, unlike in the biggggg stooooores (where finding help is often very difficult).
