I'd give 20 stars if I could. There are "Boutique" fly fishing guides out there who just want you to catch fish, because it makes them look good and makes you feel good. I have come away from these experiences feeling temporarily happy for the fish I've caught but ultimately let down because I never really LEARNED much.Then there is Wayne. From the moment we started talking about fly fishing I knew this would be an entirely different experience. Wayne is patient, observant, and infinitely knowledgeable about the sport, ecology, water, and entomological aspects of fishing the upper Sacramento river. He taught me more in 4 hours than all other fly fishing guides I've ever met, combined. I came away feeling well on my way to becoming a confident solo fly fisherman because now I have to tools to bring to bear as I approach any new location.Hands down the best fly fishing experience I've ever had.

We just spent a few days fishing through the "dog days" of July with Wayne on the Upper Sacramento River and, although the fishing was slow, we couldn't be more pleased with quality of the instruction we received from him. As advertised Wayne is a teaching guide that meets you at your level and really focuses on honing your skills and imparting the sort of knowledge that you can take with you on any river, regardless of your skill level. Wayne's encyclopedic knowledge of the Upper Sac got us into fish on the slowest of days. Aside from this, he's also a super cool guy--the sort of person you'd want to hang out with on the river--kind, funny, and super hard-working. If you are willing to learn and want to catch fish at the same time you will be pleased.
